SUCCESS at Last - Carbon in throat removal

CLR is not recommended for any metals other than chrome or stainless steel. I have heard reports that it can affect bluing if not removed quickly. That and it's incompatibility with other materials found on gun parts ( wood, painted, coated , or sealed surfaces) has led me to avoid it's use.
Ok is clr you are referencing calcium-lime-rust or something else? If so what?

I went to O’Reily, auto zone, ace hardware. Nobody had Free All. So I ordered it on Amazon be here next week. Then ill try again.

Thanks for all the help

Pretty sure it means that calcium-lime-rust stuff. The brand 'CLR' has lots of other stuff.
I have tried CLR - letting a patch with it soak in the throat for a couple hours [after I had thoroughly cleaned the barrel with a bronze brush and BoreTech]. Patch came out clean. I pushed a couple dry patches through, still nothing.

CLR does get the regular carbon out and it does come out a bit sticky.

Exactly what i was gonna ask about.
I know i seen one well known shooter use it on their brakes, he warned me to never let the stuff touch blueing , but i often wonder if he uses it in his bores ?
I can tell you from experience it's not friendly to finishes. It doesn't discriminate. I use it to break down carbon on my brakes as well. I care more about performance than looks.

My shooting team mate brings his cleaning kit to the range. After a shooting session, he immediately cleans his bbls. Nothing like working with a warm bbl to get carbon out easily. One of the best carbon cleaners is Slip 2000. Run whatever u have been using thru ur bbl. Now wet the bore with Slip 2000 , brush 15-20 strokes n let it sit sor 15 min. Now look at that first dry patch that comes out. I will bet it has a lot of black carbon on it.

Well, I think that what ever you use to first clean the barrel, you'll get black stuff out after you brush with a bronze brush. [Not sure about WipeOut - never tried it]

If you want to test a cleaner, you need to first clean with another product until there's very little or no carbon coming out on either a wet or dry patch. Then, push a jag with the cleaner to be tested through.

@FrankG tested CLR on SS and CM steel barrels. Off the top of my head...CM steel showed etching pretty quickly. SS showed etching starting after a day or 2 I believe.

So in short, be careful with it. It's not finish friendly and I wouldn't touch CM with it.

I'm happy with plain, old Hoppe's 9 traditional, but I use a patch or two every few hours for a couple of days. It does little good to stand there and run patch after patch through. You have to let the Hoppe's soak into the carbon and copper for a few hours, then it will come out on your patch. So run a lightly soaked patch in, then let the rifle sit for a few hours, then repeat every few hours until you are getting very little out on the patch even after a 6-hour soak. Then you know the bore is clean, but not etched.

I use Hoppe's9 sometimes when I'm at the range after a shooting session. Other than that, at home I'm a Boretech guy. Carbon Remover and Copper Remover works for me. I do polish my throat area every 200-300 rounds. It's a habit I got from Joe Hendricks and the 6mm Competition Match.

How important is it to get the carbon out from the corners of the grooves in the throat area? I've got ~ 1/6 of the groove on both sides with carbon. The rest of the groove has none and the lands have none.

Thanks!

Success at last. I got the Free All Monday and started using it. Using it I got more black each time than with Kroil. On Monday night I tried it and saw that it was going to do a better job so after my first experiment, I put it in the bore and let it sit overnight, Then I full stoked the barrel 30 times and short stroked it 30 times. Then cleaned it up and put more Free All in the bore and let it sit all day. By Tuesday night I could see that only the first 4 or 5 inches had any carbon. So today I just short stroked it in the morning and then let it sit another 12 hours. When I went after it this evening I could tell it was getting black much faster than anytime previous and when I patched it it was totally black. I then bore scoped it and it was almost totally clean, just a few streaks in the grooves for a few inches, not solid black.

So my new regimen cleaning a barrel will be to do all the cleaning with Montana extreme to get the copper out, then borescope it to see how much carbon is there. Put the Free All in the bore, let it sit overnight and then do a few long strokes and then short stroke it a number of times base on what I saw in the bore scope. Then check again.

Live and learn. I thought I really cleaned my barrels well. Gues I was REALLY wrong.

Thanks again everybody who has chimed in. I do appreciate it

There you go. Good for you!!! It's a good lesson to learn it for yourself. NOT SECOND HAND!!! :)

You can thank @Ackleyman2 for the Free All discovery. That stuff is INTENSE!!

So you wet patched the FreeAll in the barrel and let it sit and followed wirh short & long brysh strokes?
This process removed old carbon from the groves as well?

Did I understand your process?

Actually the only Free All I could find was in a spray can. It came with an extension tube. So I pulled back the bore guide and inserted the extension tube in the chamber as far as i could and gave it quick shot while holding my finger over the muzzle. Ine time my barrel made a very long extension tube and squirted out the end. Then i used a nylon brush to spread out the Free All in the bore. Then let it sit for about 10 to 12 hours and then went after it with the bronze brush. I found after the second session didn’t need to full stroke the barrel and just short stroked it.
