Where to move?

I told my wife if she predeceases me I am moving to Beaver Oklahoma (Cow Chip Tossing Capital of the World) , buying some acres, building a small house, a solid basement, an outbuilding with a covered walk, putting in a pond, having a porch or three on which to sit or pee off, (yes I said that) a benchrest on said porch or inside the out building, buying a white truck (everyone there has one) and I am going to raise the flag in morning, and at sundown lower it to a recording of Taps on the loudspeaker, then fire two rounds at the auto resetting steel targets located at the entrance gate of my driveway. When I start missing, I will know it is time to move on to heaven.
Would love to have ya!!! Just talk your wife into coming with you;)

Snert,

I don't have too much to offer, but one thing you might consider if you plan on buying a large piece of land is to be an owner-builder. The tax assessment is often based on the average cost of building in the county. I am an owner-builder on my retirement home/shop. This gets me pretty low taxes when it's done. I'm building a 2408 sq.ft. home which gets assessed at $120/sq.ft. that comes out to 288,960. I bought the property for $94k about 25 years ago. The assessed value on it is currently about $116k, and I pay just over 1%.

The reason I mentioned that is that there is a special classification on taxes for large undeveloped acreage in many states, maybe you could find something like that and be an owner-builder??? Would be a good way to save on the overall costs.

Sounds like a plan. The song for me would be Ragged Old Flag tho. Didn't realize this thread was almost 10 years old. I'll leave my response short. Happy New Year.

That was gonna be my choice also. Spend time in that area(30 miles away) on hunts and winters mostly mild but wildlife and varmint rich for sure. Wyoming is a bit spendy vs Michigan but if that's not an issue, it sure is a beautiful location.
Laramie Wyoming, somewhat cold with some snow but most snow stays in the mountains. Has world class trout fishing in the upper north Platte River which has a stretch of river called the Miracle Mile which has more trout per mile than any other location so it is said. Very strong fly fishing culture in this area. Housing costs are reasonable in the smaller towns outside of the tourist traps. No state income tax. Similar Socio-Economic situation in southern South Dakota on its Nebraska border, you will have some snow but nothing like New York State. Both states are conservative meaning the people are most rational. There exists a strong shooting and hunting culture in both states, one can carry concealed in state with no license or get a license for 32 other states. I am retired LEO as well, I moved here 12 years ago,( South Dakota), best move I have ever made. I also lived In New City N.Y. for about 10 years. Most of the time much drier and moderate snow if any than N.Y. in my location. Trout fishing good in the Black hills, Varmint hunting great anywhere! Much less government regulation here than what you are used to. you will be a free American if you move almost anywhere in the west..........

That's great IF you have the financial resources to do so. Not everyone does.
I am far from wealthy. I do have my SS Supplement, so the biggest expense was the temporary rental. I searched till I found something that I felt was reasonable, tapped my credit cards for as much cash as I needed, saved on my home electric bills while I was away, and changed my buying preferences for a while. It can be done if you don't mind putting a little effort into addressing the problem seriously~!

Salt Lake and adjacent Summit counties both went solidly to Biden, as well as Grand County on the CO border.

As a current northern Utah resident I would add the general Odgen Salt Lake Provo metro mess unless you need that area for work. That area has traffic, smog, crazies, and everything I want nothing to do with. We live just outside of that area and avoid it like the plague. The only reason we live in Cache Valley is my wifes family and a house she had to have (nice family home in a cold place).
