We’re a long ways away but like to come up there and visit. My wife keeps up with the Kalispell news, some disturbing news comes from there since the change.

And THAT is how to get a real picture of what life is like in an area. Don't ask the realter. Don't ask the businessman. Don't ask the tax guy, the people at Rotary or the guy walking down the sideewalk. Research the arrest logs. It is kinda like doing a chemical breakdown of the refuse in the sewer system. It tells you about EVERYTHING upstream.

I'm a born in Jersey early escapee from Cherry Hill and Haddonfield who has always been a shooting enthusiast. Moved to FL in '72 and found freedom. Over time we've been invaded by "liberal Yankees" and places to shoot and hunt have dried up. I did have a place in the Poconos for a short time but found the R/E taxes to be excessive. Although I'm now 83 years young I'm looking to "get out of Dodge".
I'm learning a lot from this thread and hoping it will guide me on my last move. I'm a widower wanting a single story residence with a porch to shoot from and pee off of, and I'd like to have some 20 to 30 acres with plenty of places to shoot and hunt coyotes near-by~!

Real estate gets cheaper the farther from town ya get, here in Texas. Look 30-60 miles west of Kerrville. An hour’s drive in nothing, over here!

Where you plan to go to escape the problems you mentioned? You can live in a remote area as a youngster. It gets exponentially more difficult in later years.

The southern oregon coast - Brookings. no we are more red here than about anywhere so lay off on your lack of gepolitics knowledge!. I got a billion acres of ocean to fish on and 500,000+ acres of public land to hunt on 20 minutes drive. Mediterranean mild climate. 20,000 population in a county as big as many of the states back east.( elk is trophy a friend shot last year. piss me off). I have dreams of retiring to a much more isolated area, but I sure was glad to not be isolated when my wife needed chemo and surgery.

I'm in Florida and still had to drive 3-1/2 hours for chemo and radiation. I just paid rent up there for 7 weeks till it was over.

Speaking from experience with my father who will turn 98 this year… all of the above plus. Loss of mobility makes one reliant on others for nearly everything... especially once you voluntarily surrender your drivers license and give your car to your teenage granddaughter.

In my particular situation it was a minimum of 20 minutes one way. If they were out where you went then you had to back-track 20 minutes then go 20 minutes the other way and hope they had it. If you struck out in both small towns it was an hour each way to get to the 'Big City'. If you think that's no big deal, keep in mind we have temperature swings from -20° to 110°. A 6" snow overnight is unusual but not unheard of. 6" of rain in 2 hours? Yep. Washed out road tubes and bridges all over the county. Drove 89 miles one way every day to work for 15 years. Why? Local jobs were barely over minimum wage and no benefits plus part time hours. Ice storm and no power for 13 days? Yep. If you couldn't fix it yourself it stayed broken. A bit of a problem if it's the furnace. Been there, done that. Burned the T-shirt and moved. Guess who bought the house. A cash buyer from Florida. Back on the market in 12 months.

That's great IF you have the financial resources to do so. Not everyone does.

I told my wife if she predeceases me I am moving to Beaver Oklahoma (Cow Chip Tossing Capital of the World) , buying some acres, building a small house, a solid basement, an outbuilding with a covered walk, putting in a pond, having a porch or three on which to sit or pee off, (yes I said that) a benchrest on said porch or inside the out building, buying a white truck (everyone there has one) and I am going to raise the flag in morning, and at sundown lower it to a recording of Taps on the loudspeaker, then fire two rounds at the auto resetting steel targets located at the entrance gate of my driveway. When I start missing, I will know it is time to move on to heaven.
