Places to Live & Shoot

Phoil like I sead in my erlyer post Eagol is a nice place.
I am NOT OR NEVER WILL BE A CITY PERSON. I live almost 100 miles north of the Boise valle just outside of a town with aproximitly 300 res. I do go to boise 2 or 3 times a year worked in Boise when I worked. It is a miled climat compaired to up here. I grew up and lived most of my life in se Az the Boise area reminds me a lot of Tucson Az just with 4 seasons and a bit milder not as hot in summer and a tad cooler in the winter vary dry climet for the most part.
Hope to get to talk to ypu when you come threw for a look.
Kevin

Central southern PA. Beautiful country. Reasonable taxes and services. Gun friendly. Three (3) 1000yd ranges near by and a 4th on the drawing board. At least as many 600/500yd ranges. Having four (4) seasons is a real plus. Not sure about you, but I need a break from high power in the winter to allow me to figure what I did the last season and to prepare for the next season. Plus, gives some time to break a few of those pesky clays. Close to several large cities for the 'cultural' end of things and flying in and out.

It's a long way from CA, but East Tennessee has a great climate and abounds with shooting, hunting and fishing. Folks are friendly and are, away from the big cities, our kind of people.

Get with Jerry Sharrett over on benchrest.com . He lives there. He told me that he has 6 places to shoot within 30 minutes of his home.

Thanks. I drove through Tennessee, and frankly, I really liked it. Convincing the wife is another matter though. I would like to visit TN again, and spend some time in a target town to really get to know how it is to actually live there. I will contact Jerry and see what he has to say.

Thanks.

Phil

Come check out Missouri. Very gun friendly. Midway, Grafs, and Sierra are here in Central MO. 3 - 1000yd Ranges, with 600 yd also. 2 member ranges that has daily availability and multiple disciplines. low unemployment. Lakes. Rivers, National forest, and plenty of friendly small towns. We even have Elk now. Come shoot with me on my 1000yd range. If you don't like the weather here just wait a day is the old timers saying. Mike

Take her to a Vols game at home, boating/fishing on the many, many lakes and streams, hiking in the Smokies, partake of the music scene in Nashville and, most importantly, explain the benefits of no income tax.

Tennessee has a 6%, flat income tax.

Still looking, but wish this place, http://www.uscidaho.org/, was closer than 320 miles to Eagle. Looks just stunning. Still looking at http://nragc.org/ and http://www.parmarng.org/. Also, http://www.blackscreekrange.com/club/. This is a good summary I just found. http://www.traderscreek.com/gun_clubs/idaho.asp

Nope, Tennessee doesn't have an income tax on wages. They do collect taxes on interest and dividends. They also have a pretty high sales tax of almost 10% and collect it on everything. That includes food, clothing, services. Property tax is pretty cheap and vehicle registration was about $70 a year.

I'm glad this thread came up. I'm in the same boat, sort of. My wife and I are parting ways so I'm looking find the best area to live that has access to a great rifle range. I currently live in NJ and belong to a pretty nice gun club here, but we're limited to 300 yards. Being that I claim I'm from TN, having lived in the Nashville area for most of my life, Knoxville was kind of high on my list.

You are correct that wages are not taxed, but lots of income other than interest and dividends is taxed. Attached is Tennessee Department of Revenue guidance for individual income tax. [br]
Just to note, there are seven states with no income tax. But, you still need to look at the total tax burden in a state, as you observed with relatively high sales tax. Tennessee is still very good, ranking near the bottom in total tax burden.

Phil,
As far as I know Eagle does not have a range, and neither does Meridian. Closest range would be Blacks Creek, and I went out there once in 7 years and simply put I didn't like the place! The better ranges are Nampa Rod & Gun Club, Homedale Rod&gun club and there is a really good club in Payette. These are all primarily rifle & pistol clubs. Trap, Skeet an Sporting clays are available also. There is also a small range in Emmett which is about 25 miles from Eagle. If you are a golfer you simply won't believe how cheap it is to play. My buddy used to live in Two Rivers, in Eagle, this is probably the nicest communities in the Treasure Valley, and they couldn't"t sit in their backyard in the evenings because the Mosquitos were so bad. Lots of small lakes cause that, as well as being 100 yards from the river.if I were choosing were to live in the valley I would focus on Star, Middleton area,s . Eagle would be my last choice!

I agree. I live in a small town in southern IL and work in St. Louis, MO. All the guys I work with that live in small towns in MO absolutely love it. MO has all the good things and none of the bad. Gun friendly, low taxes, lots of rivers-lakes-timber, lake of the Ozarks, great hunting, plenty of shooting ranges and none of the political BS! Southern MO has more timber and hills and northern MO is more flat, but has better white tail. Truly has 4 seasons. Not to cold and not to hot. In January it can be 25 degrees on a Saturday and then Monday it can be 55 degrees. Mid July till late August its usually pretty hot n humid. Nothin like the south east though. If I didnt have kids and lots of family I would move there. I actually like southern IL. The Chicago politics doesnt have any part on us down here. Some of the best whitetail in America. Just google Pike county IL whitetail deer records. Here is a pic of one of the mighty fallen corn fed IL beast! It was a bow kill too!

Not many people speaking up for Nevada, I'm not sure why. I wouldn't consider Vegas, too hot in summertime for me although I hear they have a great range. Reno is a better option, close to skiing if you're so inclined, lots of National Forest in Northern California if you're into camping, firewood cutting, etc., off roading in both CA and NV, no income tax except for certain corporations, sales taxes of 7.75% on non-food. The legislature meets every other year, the Vegas Demo's tried to push a bunch of anti-gun laws, most of which went nowhere, and the others were vetoed by the Governor.

Reno is in Washoe County, winters are surprisingly mild but are subject to major storms that pass through Northern California. Some forest fires in NorCal can leave smoke in the area for days as it just travels down the Truckee River canyon. In winter sometimes due to weather patterns you can't burn a wood fireplace until the weather changes.

The major shooting ranges are in Washoe County 25 miles north of Reno run by the County Parks Department. Regular shooting range is covered, has a range master, supplies the target backstops, has formal stops for like 7, 15, 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards. It's open Friday through Monday last time I checked. There are other ranges that usually require membership--the Palomino Valley Gun Club sponsors matches at the 300/600/1000 yard range. Here is their website: http://palominovalleygunclub.homestead.com/index.html

There is a range outside Carson City that has a pistol section and a rifle range up to 200 yards. It is open all of the time but there is no range master. The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Club sponsors some events, usually High Power. Here is their website: http://www.carsonrapc.org/index.html

There are other informal places to shoot in the desert as well. The IPSC and SASS shooters probably have a number of other places that they shoot as well, I don't know much about them.
