Where would you move to?

The thing that got me was people would pull off the road and let you pass if they saw you barreling up behind them. Even the police! Don't know if it's still like that but thought if I had a choice to have another home away from home, it'd be there.

Pretty much every rural area in TX on a 2 lane hwy with wide smooth shoulders the shoulder is the 'slow lane' and people pay attention.

You know, I've noticed the courtesy of Texas drivers driving in Texas ever since I was old enough to pay attention but what I never have been able to understand is why, when they get in the mountains of southern New Mexico; all of them forget they have a cruise control, 93% of them forget they have a rear view mirror, 85% of them can't drive the speed limit.....ever, 83% of them can't drive more than half the speed limit, 99.7% of them can't drive the speed limit for more than 40 feet at a time.............unless they have been doing less than 30 mph in a 60 mph zone around the curves, then they can somehow run 80 mph in the passing zones and look at you like you're the idiot when you finally get past them running 95 mph pulling a stock trailer uphill, on account of you didn't bring enough groceries with you to stay behind um for the rest of the week. I reckon they just can't see the rear view mirror through their glass belt buckles because of the altitude.......maybe. I've drove sheep that traveled better but somehow, they drive great in Texas.

Im born and raised texas... if i had the money id buy several thousand acres here in central texas in the hill country and never leave the ranch except for getting supplies... i hate people and society now days. Just stay in my own little world and hunt and fish...

Texas doesnt have much seasons... we got the beguinning of summer, summer, and the end of summer, then two months of "winter" middle of december to middle of feb... where its 40 to 80 degrees and doesnt stay cold long..

Cant really say much for north texas never lived there..

heat in south texas is a killer... 100 to 112 every day, humidity, get about 2 months of cool winter... nothing cold very long.. maybe a day or two in the 30s at a time...

Central texas doesnt get quite as hot... 100 to 106 usually... little cooler winters.. it will hit the 20s several times a winter...

West texas, dryer heat... still over 100 easy, but the humidity is way less.. snows every now and then in the winter... gets cold some... all looks like desert... no green.. all brown.. land is cheaper in west texas by far. Much more rugged terrain though.

Central and south texas... land is expensive... decent size places are easily 800k and up. Easily 1500 to 20k an acre in places depending on how big the place is. You gotta get a bit more west of san angelo to get into cheaper land too... west texas is more in the $300 to 400 an acre range. Nothing out there.. long and far between towns.

Lived in southern new mexico for 6 months during training... fk that place. Never want to go back.

Not much public land in tx either.. there are spots to go hunt... but for the most part land is owned.

Just my 2 cents.

I lived in the Oregon for most of my life and have traveled the entire country many times. If you like friendly people, wide open spaces, plenty of gun lovers, beautiful scenery, then I suggest Idaho or Montana. Nope, they aren't warm states but they are nice in the spring, summer, and fall and the hunting is great. Oregon has all of those things too but they have gone bat-dung crazy for the nanny state and big government now. The eastern side of the state is very conservative but the majority of people live on the western side and they control the vote. Of course, after the state goes broke and the sheep all go somewhere else there should be plenty of land there to be had:) Good luck to you.

To OP,
Don't leave Florida, just get out of south Florida. Move to north Florida. Consider Gainesville 50 mile radius or the panhandle. K&M Precision rifle and AIM Rifle club in Blakely, GA

More season change in the north and less tourism traffic. Univ of FL health system is good. Great shooting east of Gainesville. 850 yard range in Bradford county. 600 yard matches at Camp Blanding. We will be shooting 1000 yard matches on electronic targets there by January.

Florida recently considered most free state.

No state income tax. Great concealed carry laws. Highest # carry permits in the country.

Lots of great choices in the country but in my opinion you already live in a great state just maybe need to move a couple hours north.

My best friend has just been transferred to Fl just above Tampa. Knowing him as I do I expect he'll come a running back to the hills soon enough. It's mighty hard to get a hillbilly to like flat land plus I figure the heat will take it's toll fairly quick.

I'm here in central NM. I love it, but we do have 4 seasons, and winter. Southern NM is closer to year round warm. Due to in-house politics it is a dicey move, usually we leave here for Florida. I will say I believe we're firm on our second amendment rights as long as you skip the Santa Fe crowd.

Build your own range, and we do have Whittington Center though it's guaranteed to be aa long drive from warm winters, it'll be a one day drive.

Someone mentioned Ben Avery and Phoenix/Tuscon area which could be great. I'd have to vote for San Antonio.though, or tough it out and live with mild winters and come visit Albuquerque. I'd be happy to show you the local ranges, and you get any weather you want within a 1 hour drive.

Zolfo Springs Florida, Had dinner there last night after shooting with a friend at Manatee. Also thanks Larry aka Savage Dasher. Do a little research on this place, its on the Peace river and is a beautiful farming community.

My Wife prefers TX over FL because of medical conditions that require low humidity and favor warmer Winters. The search is narrowing down to the San Angelo area, which was pretty commonly favored by tuberculosis sufferers for those same environmental conditions.

Me, I just like what I hear coming out of TX; it's a far sight better than NY.

Ain't that the truth! Being in NY is like being French in 1941...occupied and oppressed.

SNERT, I love your comments on NY. I grew up living all across upstate NY, (Syracuse, Buffalo, Mexico, Fulton, etc ). Played hockey as a kid and never seemed to notice the cold winters that could last 6 months. Now that I'm 73 living on a fixed income, and not having to pay the taxes levied on NY residents, shovel snow, and not see the sky / sun for days at a time I'm glad that I live in NE FL. I do like Texas for its range of climates, affordable housing, and people ( they are friendly & out going).

Everything you said about CNY is accurate and what you ininuated is also true. People here scowl, stare, glare, mumble and are generally very unfriendly. I have been here almost 30 years and I have never been in a place that has more crazies, and more issues. I can't wait to move. Heading out west "prospecting"in just 10 days. Can't wait.

(it is pretty in summer...if you consider summer as July 4th...the rest of the year is either getting ready for winter, winter, winter still, will it ever end and will the sun ever shine, and the mud season, followed by 4th of July....if it isn't raining.) ;D

I'm just fine here in NW Missouri! Have a beautiful family, great church, beautiful home on 300 acres, and farm another 2900 acres, have a very good local smith and nice 400 yard range out my back door and a 600,700,800 and 1000 yard range on one of my farms! I'm good ;D

I got back home ( N. Florida ) about 2 months ago from wandering out west. I was in Wyoming on my property for a couple of weeks. After spending extended time in 10 of the 20 states I visited it would be hard to make a decision, but I would lean towards Arizona.

How are property taxes and things for a person on Social Security?

What is Flagstaff like? Having some cool weather and trees makes that area look attractive to me.

Linko do some looking at counties around Gainesville, but not Alachua. Taxes are too high there. If you don't need to graze horses or cattle no need to get land the has the super soil. I think they call it Number 9 soil, it grows grass with a much higher protein number cause it has a limestone base? I saw you are in Jupiter, I'am just down the road in Loxahatchee.

Linko, Flagstaff definitely has 4 seasons due to its altitude of 7000'. Plenty of evergreen trees. I think mostly Ponderosa Pine but don't hold me to that. Lots of public land, too. So no need for your own private range.
