Remington vs Savage for FTR

I'm not buying a custom action.

I'm betwixt and between using a Remington 700 or a Savage Target action for my build. I have a stock on order and plenty of time to change it up.

I currently shoot a R700 with a Timney CE 2-Stage and have done well with it. This will be a totally new build and my current will be getting used as a loaner for matches. I'll be shooting a .223 with a 1:7 and hoping to run the 90's. If the Savage, it will have a hard shoulder.

Any massive pros/cons to the actions? If I do the Remington, it'll be because I have it in hand. If I do the Savage, it will mostly be because I just want something different. I will be doing all my own work.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Bully I'm a Savage guy so maybe a little biased, but with a little work I think the Savage would be your best bet.
If you look around on the web you will see the Savage rifle team wins gold all over the world with supposedly stock out of the box rifles.
With a little work, time and true the action, pin a ground recoil lug, pillar and bed a good stock along with a good barrel and you should do very well. As for trigger adjust the accu trigger down to around 7 oz. and get used to it there.

Please look into the Remington 783 actions . I was first a Mauser guy ( 70s), then a Remington ( late 70s early 80s) then savage and customs , now a Rem 783 . It's got all the benefits of a savage with some better trigger designs . Plus they take savage barrels ( with a small amount removed from the breech

Are they available as a stripped action?
Same "footprint" as a 700 or unique?
I'll be threading/chambering myself so it's not an issue, the threading thing.
Do they take 700 triggers?
Why do you like them so much better than 700?

I'll go ahead and say it.....

Buy a Kelbly Atlas for $400 more than a Savage and you'll be much happier than with the Savage or Rem. ($950 vs $550 for New Savage)

I've had many Savages, and currently have a Savage target action in a McMillan Xit stock. They're fine if you like the trigger, but they aren't a custom action. The money spent on the custom will retain value much better than anything you put into a Rem/Savage, and you won't need to bush the bolt, true the bolt face, or square the face of the action, and you'll get the ability to use any of the good triggers out there.

But if you really want an answer to answer your question.. Savage.

I have both "blueprinted" 700s and worked over Savages. As stated above, it's mainly all about the trigger. Mine both shoot as accurately as their barrels will let them.

Besides the trigger, the biggest downside to the savages is stock availability (depending on the action length & type you have). Sounds like you have that covered though.

I don't think you'll see a material difference in how either scores in a match.

I say this half jokingly, but I do know if you placed or won in a well attended F-T/R match with a Savage .223, you'd have some fun talking trash to your buddies.

Savage 10/110s are wonky. Every bit as strong as a Remington, better gas handling in the event of a failure, good feeding...

But that trigger mechanism is wonky.

Truth is rough sometimes.

If you plan on doing a the truing and tweaking yourself, the Rem. Will have a better selection of triggers available to you. If you are going to pay to have that done, buy the Atlas.

I own a Savage model 12 one and one only!
There's nothing that would inspire me to build or buy another Savage.
1- triggers are crap !!
2- stock availability is mainly Remington or clone, I could have purchased a half dozen ready to bed stocks in less time than screwing around ordering one that's months out.
3- loose tolerances
I could continue but you get my drift

Remington out of the 2...but yes go custom clone if possible..In fact check out what PTG offers now..they have in house custom remmy clone actions starting @ $650. Ive had savages but after a while they just didnt feel as good in my hands as a Remington 700 design. Plus I was always fighting extraction issues.

Been shooting savage for 10yr in f-class and have found the Savage 2 trigger very reliable and adjustable.

I have several Savage rifles and Actions. I like them all. I use the AccUtrigger and Rifle Basics, all work well.
When they first came out everyone at the Jamboree shot Remington. One year later they were 75% Savage.
They dominate our local Factory Class matches.

90 degree sear , rigid receiver ( ejection port only is cut ) separate removable bolt head , short striker fall, smooth with min work . Tight bolt clearance , very true and square ( I've done about 10 or 11 . I own 5 . I converted one to left feed right eject and love that set up .
I've got a dozen or 20 savage rifles , all worked stocked rebarreled and still prefer the working of the bolt AND EASY bolt lift of the 783
Not sold as action but is cheap as complete rig with scope $300 .
Nothing is like the Remington 700 . The 700 design is 60 yrs old . This has a savage style accutrigger . Easy to get lighter but no aftermarket yet

Savage with a Rifle Basix Trigger 2, and your in the game.

Most of my F/Class rifles are built with Savage Actions. Now when I am on the line, over 1/2 of the rifles have Savage Actions. Everything is available if you know where to look. I have 8 F/Class rifles ready at any time for the line.

They opened a lot of eyes at the range. Many were spending in the $4,000 dollar range for their custom rifles, and a $1,500 Dollar rifle was outshooting them!

I've seen Savage .223s win a number of F-TR matches, usually 600 yards or closer. I've never seen trash talking result, as most of the shooters have seen it enough times it's not a big surprise.

I believe what you are going to get is biased options on both and then some. I'm a Savage guy, have been for some years now, have one custom, Hall. No more Remingtons for me.
