What I would like to see is a custom action based off of Remington 700 footprint to take advantage of the stock and trigger selection and a Savage small shank barrel thread to take advantage of the huge selection of prefit barrels.
I use the Shilen DGR action and love it!

I’d not hesitate to use a Bighorn either.

They both are 700 footprint, use 700 triggers and use Savage Prefit barrels.

I’m a fan of the barrel nut. I have used Douglas Premiums, Hart, Krieger, Brux and Bartlein, all installed by some of the best names in the business, and all of them were conventional shoulders installations. None of them have shot as well as my Criterion Barrels that I installed myself with a barrel nut.
I think my Rock Creek nut barrel will outshoot my Criterion with the same 6br chamber. But its darn close.
The two recent ones I did had to have the barrel channel opened up to fit the nut. Btw, the pac-nor nut I think looks much better than the standard short savage style.
The new American Rifle Company Nucleus action. Same thing.

Southern Precision can make any kind of prefit apparently. He stocks Bartleins. Here is his price list.

Yup, and he is a good guy to deal with, not to mention an excellent Gun Smith.
I'm shooting a X-Caliber .243 barrel on one of my rifles. I like it, it's plenty accurate and will shoot under .5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with minimal load development. 1100 rounds down it with H1000, going strong.
This is a rem 783 with a criterion in 6xc shot with irons and a sling at 600. The barrel nuts work pretty well but it would be nice to see what a cut rifled one would do
The only benefit I see to this is buying prefit barrels. If you have your own reamer (I do) or use your smiths reamers a barrel vise is about $50 and you can switch barrels all day long and not worry about head spacing.
I've got one Savage, and I've got 4 other actions (2Rem, Defiance, Panda) that have 2 to 4 barrels each that I swap as I desire. Two of those actions have multiple chamberings (one 223/208 one 6SLR/308). Never touch a headspace gauge to change them; spin one off, spin another on. It take slightly longer than taking off the scope caps.
In the case of my 308s all the barrels chambered with the same reamer can use the same brass. One more thing that makes life easier.
Actually i didnt shoot that group. I had one of the good shooters in our club see what it can really do. It took him a couple shots to get used to it. It was before i did any load development. Just put my 39 gr of ramshot hunter fireform load and pulled the handle on my dillon.Yeah, maybe with a cut you would not have dropped 2 points... I'm only kidding![]()
