Quarter Bore Resurgence

They ain't playing. 62.99 ? Thats unbelievable. Bought some 300 Berger OTMs for 8.00 more than that from OTM tactical. I'll wait till they get some in. Much more reasonable thru them. No hurry at that price.

Honestly everything has gone up in price not just in the reloading world. Everything. Might just be the going rate these days for some items.

Never had much thought of the .257 caliber. Bullets were light and even tho they still perform well on game, my perfect bullet for most calibers seem to be the heavies unless I'm varmint hunting or shooting closer range targets. When the 131 came out, it piqued my appetite for the .257, especially looking at the results and ballistics on paper. I've owned .243s for years. I've been pretty happy with 95-105s and never really had a taste for heavier. Seems odd too because the 115/120s offered for the 257 are about on par with the 105s in the .243. For the 243 to be about equal to the 257 with 131s, there would need to be a 118-120 grain bullets offered for the .243 yet nobody seems to complain about it. Wonder why??? I sure don't. Before the 257 heavies, I was just fine with the 6.5 using 140 grain bullets. I think there's more room for heavier .243 AND .257 bullets. Not that they are needed but sure would be interesting. The 6.5 has the old Matrix in the 160 grain albeit impossible to find. I think we will see a heavier 243 and a step up in the 257 again.

I think part of the issue with people not shooting the heavies, is that aside from just a few cartridges, rifle manufactures don't make them. Or make them with anything other than a 1:10 twist barrel.

Other than the new kid 25 Creedmoor, the most popular being 25-06, and 257 Weatherby, with a couple 257 Roberts thrown into the mix.

I would love to see a manufacturer build a rifle for 250 Souper and get it SAAMI approved.

On a site like this, people don't buy factory rifles nearly as much as custom. Hell, it's pretty simple replacing a factory barrel. Chamber up a 25 Souper barrel and replace the barrel on a rifle you currently own. Just that easy. I'm waiting on my smith to finish a barrel for my 25-284. Shouldn't be long now. Your right, many have 10 twist barrels and bullet choice is limited. Easy fix tho.

Alas, this site is the exception, rather than the rule.
While i have no issue with rebarreling a rifle, i know at least 40 people with firearms that wouldn't think of going to a wildcat chambering because there's no readily available factory rifle at the store.
Heck, only 2 of those 40 reload, or own a torque wrench in inch pounds, or a scope level.

3 of them have had rifles that were so gunked up, the safety wouldn't operate. Beyond running a patch through it, and putting yet another heavy coat of oil on it.
Rifle was never taken apart & cleaned. Took me 3 days of cleaning on my neighbors Savage 99, to get it operational.

I agree. It's not even a consideration. People are scared to think outside that box. I was that way at one time until I had my first barrel chambered and installed. I watched a gunsmith do much of the work and realized it's just like anything else, a job that requires a little talent but something anybody can do (the barrel install, not the chambering).

Not me !! LOL

It's interesting you mentioned doing a 25-284. I was on the
phone the other day talking to a guy about squeezing some
brass down for him. We talked barrel life and I recommended
contacting Bartlien about there newer barrel steel. I was thinking
the 6.5- 284 might make some sort of a come back with the new
steel. Hell of a cartridge but terrible round count.

I've had good life from mine. Broughton and bartlein barrels have served me well to around 1800+ rounds easily with sub moa beyond 1800. I run them around 2950-2975 with the 140 class bullets and life is pretty long. I hear that alot but I think many guys push them into the 3100 range and that drops the numbers alot. Either way, barrels are not real bad price wise and the trade off is worth it IMO

Another source of Berger 135’s (100 and 500 count boxes):
