Quarter Bore Resurgence

Good point. I'll find that out soon. I went with a 7.5. My guess is I'll be fine with 115-135s. Not sure about the ELDX 110s. Hornady is common for jacket failure I hear. Never had any issue personally but they exist. Even with a 7.5 twist running 110s at 3400 fps, RPM is 326K. I'm shooting a 22-250AI 8 twist running 53 Vmax at nearly 4k. No issues. Fingers crossed.
I have only shot the 117 SST and the 131 Blackjack so far through mine (1:7.5) and the 117s are typically for fireforming since I bought a large quantity of pulled bullets for cheap. I have run the blackjacks up to 3230 FPS with no bullet issues (too much pressure though), but the SSTs have only seen 2900 FPS.

I'll do the same. I'll start out breaking in the rifle with the 117-120s I have. Get some drop data out to 500 yards and break in the barrel. Once it's had 20-40 rounds thru it, I'll run the 131s for accuracy and drop data also. The 131s will be for the longest ranges. Hope to get down to Ohio to try them on some ground hogs. I have some spots I can kill ground hogs beyond 1000 yards so it'll be a great place to work up some drop data and windage numbers.

I've done a few barrels in .25 creed ---- also a bunch in .25-06CK.

For hunting deer on down and plinking the Creed is a winner. I've used Lapua 6.5 cases sized in a Redding Type S die with the appropriate bushing for .25. Load and shoot, done. Personally I'd do it before any of the other small cases. The bigger cases would either be .25-.284 or .25-06 Ack for hunting.

You should also consider the 25 GT, it's a shortened version of the 6x47. My 6gt shoots the 107SMKs at 2950fps and some guys push faster. the 25 GT would likely fit very well and be a good exchange of barrel life.

QL Shows 3k fps with 28" barrel and RL17 at 54k PSI don't quote those numbers, I would need to verify bore area and case volume. but would be a fun windcat that others are starting to use.

I have been shooting the 257 Weatherby with zero freebore since the late 90's, on my second reamer now with .030 freebore.

26", 9T, X caliber barrel shoots the 110g Accubond and 115g Berger hunting into tiny, tiny groups at 3600. R#22 and 215's of course. With a muzzle break, you see the deer flop in the scope, during recoil!

Coyotes are darn near shot in half.

I am not about to change anything!

Love the Roberts, have 3 of them, But have always wanted something more. Bullet selection has always been the 25s enemy, but I see now that Berger has a 133gr Elite Hunter [0.613] and 135gr Hybrid [0.650] that look to be game changers. Yes they require a faster twist, but seeing these has rekindled my desire for a custom 25 something...

I'm looking for cartridge suggestions. The gun I am thinking about about is an old Winchester XTR Featherweight. Its got the longer action, but the short little box magazine. I'm not married to it, but its what I have on the shelf to start with, and I love model 70s. I see this as a target/competition gun, and also a long range hunter, deer/sheep/goat sized stuff.

Efficiency and barrel life is important, velocity is secondary. With 0.600+ BCs one can easily live with a little less speed. I am trying to come up with a cartridge list, 25x47 Lapua, 25 Creedmoor, 250 Savage, 250 Ackley, 25 WSSM, 25 Souper, 257 Roberts, 257 Ackley, 25-284, 25 PRC, 25 SAUM, 25 WSM, 25-06. What others am I missing? Any recommendations?

The 25-284 looks just tremendous! 3100fps+ with 135gr 0.650 BC looks other worldly, but is going to be hard on barrels.
250AI looking very close at. Can seat long bullets out and not intrude in the powder space. Decent brass, but requires a fireform.
Likewise the 257AI, but I worry a bit about seating depth with a long heavy bullet?
PRC, SAUM, WSM etc all seem like overkill and barrel burners.
Creedmoor, Souper and 284 all have great brass, and I believe just a die sizing, that's a plus.

I don't really know what I want exactly, looking for thoughts & experiences.
I've got lots of stuff, and don't really need another gun or cartridge to reload, but that's not the point right?

Thanks for any input.
I find myself looking at BC numbers on bullets often as a gauge to choosing which appear to be the best option. More importantly the bullets accuracy seems to be the bigger reason I do it today. Your correct, once that number gets into the .6 range, the search is over. Now it's only how accurate is it and how good does it perform on game. Leaving the muzzle at 3000 fps seems to be the minimum number I look for starting out. Given the BC and accuracy is good, everything else usually falls into that category.

The Berger 135's were in production this past month. They should start showing up @ retailers over the next few weeks....

Does me no good with 4 barrels in a 1:10 twist...

I did however talk (ok, exchange some e-mails) with Berger about the very issue of all the 1:10 twist rifles out there.
They seemed interested about my reccomendation of a 117 or 120 grain Hybrid Target.

Time will tell.

Wonder how long abullet that would be? The 115 vld is about as long as you can get with a 10 twist unless high altitude and high velocity. Not sure. A more forgiving hybrid ogive would be nice tho

I still have 3 boxes of the 120gr Sierra HPBT GameKings. They are longer than the 115gr VLD, with a longer bearing surface.
Except for the low BC, they are plenty accurate out of my 257 Roberts out to 300 yards.
Haven't had the opportunity to shoot them further yet.

Great bullet for accuracy. Not sure on game.
