25-06 question

I'm a big fan of my Bobs but if you go to Grafs or another website and look at the number of 6mm and 6.5mm bullets offered vs the 25 caliber it is hard to justify. A 6.5-06 AI sure sounds cool.

Again, you're in wildcat territory.

Last I heard, RSAUM cases were hard to find.
Has that improved any?

Oh, speaking of hard to find.
Add to the factory cartridges the 25WSSM.
Speed about equivalent to the 25-06 but in a much shorter and fatter case.
I really need to get mine out hunting this year.
ADG makes 7 RSAUM Brass.. its really good brass

Yeah, not as many offerings.
But for some reason the bullets that are available seems to make the 25 caliber kill above what ballistics would suggest.

I'm with you on the killing power of the bigger .25s. Whatever 'je ne sais quoi' they possess, they punch well above their weight class. I've had at least one .25-'06 deer rifle in the safe for the past 50 years, for the simple reason that the darned thing kills like a lightning strike.

I'm no Creed fanboy, but unless you properly twist a 25-06 allowing for the new high BC bullet options, a 25 Creed will out class the good ol' 25-06 with far less powder, noise and recoil. Now I'll completely contradict myself by stating the 257 Wby is still my favorite .25 of all time...even with a 10-twist. Ha! If I were to build a long action rifle with a .473 bolt-face, I'd skip the 25-06 and go with an 8-twist 6-06 all day long.

From my research, the only 25-06 alternatives I consider worthy are a 257 Weatherby Magnum and a Ackley Improved version of the 25-06. I am old school fuddy duddy when it comes to all this "new" cartridges and what have you, but unless they enlarge the case capacity, its not worth my time. I always wanted to try a 6mm or 243-300.But a 257-300 could be fun too. Not sure how to neck down or shrink that much brass down to the 257 neck diameter on a 300 H&H magnum case though. If the remaining energy is 1800 foot pounds at 400 yards, that could be a nice 400 yard elk cartridge. I cant see anything past 400 yards, but maybe 500 yards if that residual energy is there too.

OK, nevermind, yeah 257 weatherby magnum. It doesnt kick to hard from what I am told too.

A couple of friends built .257 STW rifles. Shot like a laser. Probably better today with faster twist and heavier bullets.

I've owned a .25-06 since 1981 when I purchased a new Remington 700 VS. It was my first centerfire rifle and will be with me to the end. I've hunted groundhogs, deer and even black bear with it. It is now on its second barrel a Krieger. I still remember when I ordered that barrel. I was told I could change to another cartridge and didn't have to stay with the .25-06, my reply was why would I want anything else it has done everything I asked it to do.

There are newer cartridges out there but I never got caught in the want to follow the crowd for something newer. If something works why change?

In a recent periodical, there is an article Titled: THE GOLDILOCKS CREEDMNOOR, hyping the superiority of the latest offering ( it's IS a .25 cal., so, it can't be bad:D), porpelling 128-138 Gr. bullets toward some great destiny. The problem, brushed off by the author: anyone can make - or, have made - a fast twist Roberts, 25/06/.257 Wby, etc. . . . ;) Hell, I have 138 Gr. .257 bullets I made over a decade ago . . . and a 1:8" twist .257 Ack. Imp barrel - just never got around to messing with them . . .

Especially for hunting rig consideration, here are some calculations using an exterior ballistics App, to which my rifles are 'calibrated' (as in shooting/verifying on targets): .257 Roberts Ackley Imp.; .25/300WSM. Both of my DATA sets (abbreviated @ 500Yd) use 110 Gr. BT bullets, while the GOLDIELOCKS set is calculated - using my calculator - based upon MV and BC from the publication. All are based upon sight 2.0" above the bore, & 200 Yd. zero, with 500 Yd. drop/drift(10 MPH)/energy:
1) .257Roberts Ack. Imp.,110 Gr. BT, MV 3320 FPS, -28.3", 12.9", 1486 Ft.Lb.
2) .25/300WSM, 110GR. BT, MV 3520 FPS, 23.6", 12.4" 1885 Ft.Lb.
3) 25 Creedmoor, Hornady 138Gr. A-Tip (published BC .695), 2800FPS, 37.5", 10.6, 1571 FT.Lb.

I fail to see much difference. A decent range-finder would put Golldielocks in the ballpark. "Take your pick".:p RG

P.S. DATA for the .257 RAI & 25/300WSM via Bartlein 1:10" twist, 24"#4 contour, 5-groove barrels with (respectively), Rl-17 & Superformance powders, and the unobtainium BIB 110 Gr. BT.
MVs via Oehler Model 33 with 5' spacing, centered at 15' from muzzle, and not corrected for true MV. Drops determined on paper target groups at 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, & 700 Yd. and, of course, on a given day, subject to density altitude.

Is there a new cartridge out that can match the 25-06..i talk about different cartridge all the time because they're to many to choose from.
If some one was going out today to purchase a 25-06 would you tell a buddy..hold on..check this out before you buy that..
I cant keep up on whats hit the market..
I doubt the 25 creedmore can do it..
25-06 with 65.8 grains of water for case capacity
.25 creedmore with 52.5 grains of case capacity
257 roberts AI with 57 grain capacity
So what modern case is the equivalent of a 25-06 in a .25 cal cartridges
The 257 roberts AI is still in the 6.5 creedmore power level of cartridges in my opinion. i would like to get up in power level i like the 25-06.
I was just wondering if some new .25 cal kid on the block was making noise..
Its not easy to find a nice 25-06 any more ..i think any used one you pick up is gonna need a new barrel right off the starting line

@bobcat93

If your going to pick up one and buy a new barrel for it consider
a barrel with a faster twist.
