Long range load development at 100 yards.

Erik,
I haven't commented much but been following your thread from the start, very good informative thread with no fights and lots of info, I think Forum Boss should consider it for a sticky thread,
Wayne.

Yes I have always felt that 100 yards was to get things close and then you needed to go to the distance you were shooting to fine tune the load, I only compete at 1000 yards, I am busy building round pens and ranch work right now, I missed my match this weekend because of work and weddings but when I start working up loads for my new 6brdx I am going to try and impliment some of the stuff I have been reading on here, I may have to p.m you with a question or two,...thanks again.
Wayne.

Erik,
Bravo on your thread, great information. This request is a little off topic, but could you post your brass and bullet prep procejure before you start to test? Providing that there is any, which I assume there is. I'm just trying to get MY DUCKS in a row to build the most accurate ammo that I'm capable of.

Thanks.
Don Dunlap

Don, I will probably start another thread in the future about brass prep. Heck, I might do a thread on every aspect of precision reloading as I know it.

I believe the next one should be about finding the lands accurately though, as I see people are all over the place on this issue.
tell us Erik how to find the lands accurately. I want to know if I'm doing it right

I've been using an alternative method that I like far better than the OAL gauges which seem to slip on unloading the round.

I have two cleaning rods, and a machined clamp for one of them, A dewey rod works great as the brass male threads provide a nice flat end point.

I close the bolt and slide the dewey rod down the muzzle (carefully). When the rod is resting on the bolt face, (make sure its not the firing pin or extractor) I attach the clamp flush with the muzzle.

I then place a bare bullet into the chamber, and remove the bolt (doesn't have to be in that order).
I use 2nd cleaning rod to hold the bullet on the lands (light pressure).
I then put the dewey rod back down the muzzle until it touches the bullet. The measurement between the clamp and the muzzle is my OAL to the lands. I do this for three bullets of the lot.

I just ran a ladder test this morning, I will be shooting groups this afternoon or tomorrow @ 600 yards. The node was between 30.9 to 31.8 grains. Test loads the node was in were 31.0 - 31.6 grains. Powder was H4350 and the round is the 22BR with the Berger 90VLD.

That sounds like a good 1000y loading. How does the BC compare to 6mm or 6.5mm, and what range of velocity are you running?

(I'm interested in a future 22BR that is why I ask).

Erik,

Not trying to hijack the thread, because I intend to try your style of testing the loads that come the node spread. I want to how well it works for me. Now if your not interested in what I come up with, I won't post it.

Froggy, in your prior post, you said nothing about trying my method, you simply informed us that you did a ladder test and that you would be shooting it at 600 yards. Of course I would like you to try my method and post results, but I just want this thread to stay consistent.

Thanks.

Sorry, what I meant to ask, is can you provide 100y tests, ladder tests, and chrono data?
I'd assume the data would overlap, but I'd like to see how much (especially the 100y and ladder test)

Thank you,
-Mac

broncman, Erik doesn't do ladder tests. This thread is all about how he does his testing by shooting groups at 100 yards.

Well I shot some groups today. Load that I liked was 31.1 grs H4350 with the Berger 90VLD's. If I could the pics to up load, you would be seeing them right now!
