Powder Prices Are Shocking

I'm not a depression era kid, but I was raised by folks who were. I think twice before I throw out a coffee can, or a bread tie. I save nails and screws that will never be used except after the apocalypse, and when we cook a chicken, the only thing that goes to waste is the feathers and the cluck.

I've got quite a bit of old powder that I received from another tight-wad before he died, and now I'm glad I hung onto it. He got it from his dad and uncle before they died, and some of it is about 80 years old now. Actually surplus from WWII. I'm still using it with no problems, and God willing, I'll live long enough to finally use it up.

I've got a hunch that in the next -?? lets say decade or so that there's gonna be a new generation of "depression kids". jd

Don't worry. It's not going to get any better I'm afraid. There's a guy named Martin Armstrong (Armstrong Economics) who writes programs to analyze markets and make predictions. He ran one of his programs and it estimated that the US would fold in 8.6 years.
Between politicians, rapidly advancing AI and integration into key systems, and a rampant pace towards Idiocracy... I'm guessing he's either spot on, or even a little far out on his prediction.

Either way, I have enough powder to likely cover the span.

At some point United States will experience “too much month at the end of the money.” If this needs to be explained, well bless your heart.
In keeping with todays date and event, look what the greatest generations offspring produced. Oh how have we made them proud.

Would you explain your last two sustenances in detail?

Lol, I love all you patriots and your leave now why wait BS. But, you know America doesnt make it easy for the average guy to just pick up and move out of the country. If I could, I would! Mexico isn't really that bad. If it was that bad, then why do so many people vacation and retire down there huh? Mind your business and the cartel leaves you alone. Mind your business in America and your taxed to death, and have a ton of BS laws and agendas shoved down your throat. And anyone who thinks America is still the greatest country on earth, might also need a serious reality check...You dont ever truly own anything here. The government taxes and can take whatever, whenever they want from you. The most corrupt government on earth, by far. If you want to fund my move and board, I'd gladly go now haha. Like I said, I can not wait to get out of this shit hole country. Counting the days...
Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out! You only have to move to Idaho or Utah to be in a different country.

THIS has been an interesting read. Opinions covered and no insults.
So ..I'm an escapee from Kali,to central Oregon,to Kentucky, and I've seen the price of primers and powder go up, and in my paranoia of rimfire didn't see this coming. However unless I become a competitive shooter again...will be ok.
I'm also a Navy vet, post nam tweener, but made a SOPAC in 79, so I've been overseas. I will not leave the USA, I will not live under martial law, but anyone so upset that they wish to leave may do so. But if you do please make it one way.
For those who hav'nt been overseas if you went abroad you'd understand why people want to come here at all cost. You would also find out what rights you have here vs elsewhere.

For better or worse, this is probably gonna be my main rifle powder for the next -- oh heck, the rest of my life. Unopened 8 pounder for $56.25. I've still got a few one pounders of the same vintage that I'll use before I open this one.

I'm not sure if that top number is a date code, but could be. BiMart has been a bastion of good deals for me. I got my basic Rock Chuck Reloading outfit there in 1976 i believe for around a hundred bucks. I think that was the press, auto-primer attachment, Uniflow powder measure, and the crappy old RCBS lube and pad. I think I had to get the dies separately. And I think they were probably ten or twelve bucks. jd

My time as a swabbie took me to places where the measure of a man's worth was how much tin he had for a roof. I saw martial law when in Portugal. Incredible poverty in the Caribbean, no sanitation, and a world where violence is a means of survival.

I went to Europe where they treated US military as friends, seldom paid for my own drinks over there. Came back to states and was treated with disdain.

Those that want to leave aren't Americans, because Americans don't run, we don't become refugees,

we fight.

Lots of bickering about high prices here. It’s never been easier to get “richer”. If you have any skills and a great work ethic you’ll succeed. If you’re smart AND want extra money there’s so many opportunities for “side hustles”. I feel pretty blessed and always enjoy saying “The harder I work the luckier I get”

Given the reduced attendance at many of the matches, I can't help but think that economics are a big part of the reason for it. Whether it is the cost of components, fuel, lodging, or just the general cost of living, it is plainly having an effect. I am definitely shooting a lot less centerfire than I used to, because the cost takes a lot of the fun out of it.
It's kind of funny in a way. Back when I was shooting a lot of BR and travelling to matches, I was paying 10 bucks for a thousand primers and five for a can of powder. A Hart barrel was 70 bucks. The thing is, at that time, I was poor. When I drove down to Issaquah to shoot, I did so in a 1964 Comet I had purchased from Rent-a-Wreck. So, when it came to spending discretionary income, I was spending it all. Now, 44 years later, I'm sort of well off, I guess, but I suffer greatly from sticker shock every day. If I travelled and shot the same as I did 45 years ago, I would not have to spend anything like all my discretionary funds, but it's difficult to not feel like I'm getting bent over the counter (figuratively speaking) when I buy a can of powder.
Like I said, high costs take a lot of the fun out of it. The real problem with all of this is that it puts competitive shooting and reloading out of the reach of the young guys all of our sports need to keep them going. At one BR match I attended, anyone looking to talk to "the old guy with a white beard" would have had an abundance to choose from. The firing line looked like a Santa Claus convention! The young guys trying to support a family are being priced out of many of the venues because they can't afford to travel to shoot or waste the money putting shots down range. Still, I guess this is what they call 1st world problems. WH
Will all the young guys around here aren't priced out of anything. Their venue is anyplace they can dump 500 rounds thru their tacticool AR. I see it every week at the range I volunteer at.
