Powder Prices Are Shocking

Lots of bickering about high prices here. It’s never been easier to get “richer”. If you have any skills and a great work ethic you’ll succeed. If you’re smart AND want extra money there’s so many opportunities for “side hustles”. I feel pretty blessed and always enjoy saying “The harder I work the luckier I get”
even in horrific times, and the middle of wars and famine, there are folks who survive, flourish, and even make a profit. Usually not the grumblers though. jd

Lol, I love all you patriots and your leave now why wait BS. But, you know America doesnt make it easy for the average guy to just pick up and move out of the country. If I could, I would! Mexico isn't really that bad. If it was that bad, then why do so many people vacation and retire down there huh? Mind your business and the cartel leaves you alone. Mind your business in America and your taxed to death, and have a ton of BS laws and agendas shoved down your throat. And anyone who thinks America is still the greatest country on earth, might also need a serious reality check...You dont ever truly own anything here. The government taxes and can take whatever, whenever they want from you. The most corrupt government on earth, by far. If you want to fund my move and board, I'd gladly go now haha. Like I said, I can not wait to get out of this shit hole country. Counting the days...

It's dead simple to relocate to MX, rent a place, pack your bags and go. The US doesn't make it difficult in any way. In fact unless you want to renounce your citizenship they aren't even in the picture.

Our youngest thought it would be great to spend winters down there and liked it so much has been living just south of Cancun for several years. Comes and visits for weeks or months at a time, travels here/there in the world, and goes back down there balance of the time. Does he consider giving up his citizenship here and moving there or anywhere else permanently, not on your life. He's well aware of our issues here, but also of how it is many other places and even where there isn't the issues we face most of those places have other things that we as US American's would not like long term.

Lots of expats love it in MX and you might too. You should go give it a try and if so get your green card so you can stay. Heck after a time you can even get citizenship if that's what you want. It's not difficult at all.

That said:
Just remember what you wished for after you've been there a while...

Short version, every place has its trade-offs.

As for owning anything here, yeah well most people think they own the property and home they have. They don't understand what a title is. It's a bit like coffee and beer, we're really just renting it for some time.

At the end of the day while we like to whine about powder prices (myself included) since 1998ish it has went up less than 500% and investing the same cash in say IBM (not a stellar performer by any standard) they would have increased roughly the same. However if a person invested at any number of well known stocks since the 2000's or even 2010's they would have seen increases in the thousands of percent.

My contribution to the not quite as old as some powder collection file. Some of those are unopened. Oh and yeah Bimart is still one of the best places to get many items.

The first pound of powder my dad gave me to load .45 ACP was the old Hercules Bullseye canister. Every round went bang. I still have it somewhere empty. I'll have to find it and see if the price is still on it.

There’s likely some sort of trade off that works.

When I retired I tracked every expense for 3 months to fully understand where the money went. I don’t smoke, and a $100 bottle of whiskey lasts me a year or more, seldom drink beer. Cooking at home tastes better and is cheaper.

I saw both H4350 and IMR4064 for $75 today. Seeing how I have 3-4 pounds of each, not much of a problem. I’ve probably got something else as good or better.

I thought I might sell my 220 Swift. Sizing Swift cases this week it struck me that those LRP are a little easier to get than SRP.

Gotten away from more higher capacity calibers in favor of smaller capacity.

Same here. My Swift went down the road some time ago, along with my 243AI and 223AI PD rigs, as most of my shooting now is at ground squirrels with the occasional rockchuck, and those calibers were overkill for my targets of choice. They all burn more than 28grs of powder too.

Now I mostly shoot my K-Hornet, 17M4, 20VT and 221FB. The small FB case uses right at 18gr~ of powder for all the field performance I really need on these critters. Getting almost 400 rounds out of a pound of powder is now making more sense than ever. My 223's now are saved for the "big guns" in the rat patch. My how things have changed.

Sidebar: I still have two pounds of H4831 marked "This is WWII Surplus Powder. Storage Life is Not Guaranteed". The price sticker reads $2.79 from 1971, and it still works in my .270Win as well now as it did in 1971.

Last fall there were a few good sales. Like the Nov/Dec Hodgdon 20%off sale. I thought they charge stupid hazmat and shipping, I'm not falling for that. Then I did the math and ordered a bunch. Always do the math...

After that I noticed Cabelas had AA2700 for $210/8#, I got two. I hadn't loaded it, but folks had talked about how cool it shot vs 4064 and better barrel life. I thought you know those sage rats and coyotes aren't going to care if my groups are worse, they will be just as dead.

I'm not a depression era kid, but I was raised by folks who were. I think twice before I throw out a coffee can, or a bread tie. I save nails and screws that will never be used except after the apocalypse, and when we cook a chicken, the only thing that goes to waste is the feathers and the cluck.

I've got quite a bit of old powder that I received from another tight-wad before he died, and now I'm glad I hung onto it. He got it from his dad and uncle before they died, and some of it is about 80 years old now. Actually surplus from WWII. I'm still using it with no problems, and God willing, I'll live long enough to finally use it up.

I've got a hunch that in the next -?? lets say decade or so that there's gonna be a new generation of "depression kids". jd
You said “be a new generation of "depression kids".

How do you think that will work out with internet, satellites, probably electricity, grocery stores…….etc..gone! Most of the recent generations have no idea even what a garden is.
Dang scary to me.

Complete collapse of everything.

I'm not sweating the small stuff. If I can't afford to shoot , it's simple, I can't afford to shoot.

Finally! Thank you Dan for the common sense, something that's lacking when it comes to this subject.

I think the Isley Brothers said it all:

"You know you make wanna (shout!)
Kick my heels up and (shout!)
Throw my head back and (shout!)
Throw my hands up and (shout!)
Throw my head back and (shout!)
Come on now (shout!)"

What am I shouting?

SHOOTING IS A ... HOBBY!!!!

As such, it's a personal choice, not a necessity. If it gets too expensive, find something else less expensive that interests you, and do that instead.

Could be worse...we could be into race cars or speedboats.
I Was into race cars for over 25 years--I had a perfect chance to sell out and did! It was like getting a big raise $$$$ --when I look now the prices of engine parts, cams , pistons etc slicks--All of it has gone up more than powder--when I compare what I spent then to now on shooting--it is a laugh out loud happy laughter--
Yup powder prices make me cringe but after you have your rifles , scopes, and equipment paid for it is like buying gas for the race car--
Just stock up while we can get it-- Its when you can't get any that is the real problem

Rick has the right idea--smaller cartridges can be just as fun as any other

Powder is Cheap compared to Nitro!
