Long range load development at 100 yards.

Jim, I agree with Steve. Find the widest node and load to the middle of it. If temps will be higher, load to the bottom of the node. Do the opposite if the temps will be cooler, but don't load outside the node.

When you test seating depth, only move .003" at a time.

Ah! And where would that be in these groups?

Brian

52.4 and 52.6 look really good. I would load 52.5 and adjust seating depth in .003" increments starting from .005" jump out to .032", after the best seating depth has been established, load from 52.0 to 53.0 in .1 gr. increments to establish node bounds.

Thanks.

If I may indulge you a bit more - what do you like about 52.4 / 52.6 better than 53.0 / 53.2?

The answer is important, because to me there's no obvious differentiator, so I'd like to program the CPU between my ears.

I really like 53.0 - 53.2, but Jim (falconpilot) wants to be at the lowest node.

Jim, what do the ES numbers look like with these loads? It looks like 52.8 is also part of the 53.0 and 53.2 node.

Erik - after reading page #1, this is my take. I'm looking for the center of the group from 3 different loads that have the same relationship with the dot in the bull from the vertical position only? Then work on seating depth in .003 increments to tighten the group. With the components I listed, where should I start? If it stops raining, I should be able to get to a 100 yard range tomorrow.

This what I have:
Factory Savage Model 12 Bench Rest 12 twist
Sightron III 10x50 1/8 click, std weaver rail & rings

Powder: Varget & H4895
Bullet: Berger VLD 168
Primers: Federal 205 & GM205M, CCI 450 & BR-4
Brass: Lapua Palma

Yeap, you got it.

Start at 43.0 gr. and work up to 46.5 watching for pressure signs. Stop immediately if you see pressure signs.

Erik - when you look at the center of the groups in relationship to the center of the bull and measure the vertical, what is an acceptable variation?
I know they won't all be the same, so what is an acceptable +/- ?
I shot 5 different charges of varget today, all at .005 jam.
Vertical variation for the best 3 as follows:
44 = 3/16 vertical - tight vertical string all three touching
44.5 = 5/16 vertical - nice clover leaf, all three touching
45 = 3/8 vertical - open vertical string, two touching

Should I load more of the 44.5 and work on seating depth, or load on up to 45.5 & 46

I really appreciate your help!

Can you post a picture?

Sounds like 44.5 is the one though. Load 44.5 and work on seating depth. Shoot 3 shot groups moving the bullet .003" into the case each group. Load 10 groups and you should see the groups tighten.

May I ask... Exactly what are you using as a seating die to get that accurate of seating depth, and second, what are you even using to read it?

I will let you know as soon as I file for my patent. Stay tuned. ;)

Erik - what tolerance are you using when seating bullets i.e. +- .0005"?

Yes, +-.0005" or better.

I wish I was patient enough to get that tight. The cumulative variance is very time consuming to work out, not to mention the .1 grain tolerance in powder measure. Hand measuring, .1 grain seems to take a good many kernals at times.

I've taken to lifting the cup off of the scale, giving it a slight shake, and then re weighing. 3 times typically; with the same weight, and it goes into the case. I can still tell most times if I'm on the high side or the low side of the weight increment.
