Long range load development at 100 yards.

Hello again,
Here is another seat test target that I shot today. Pretty windy today. Same powder charge and neck bushing. I like the 2.419 group. It's .018" jumped. What do you think? The raw group is .375" with the minus .243"+ .132".
Thanx again

Thank you again Erik. Would you load to 2.419 or go between that and 2.422? Would that be the small window of accuracy?
Thanx again

Sir,

I made up 2 sets of loads last night 7 sets of 3 for a total of 42 rounds.

I shot 21 rounds at 100 and 21 rounds at 200.

For my purpose it doesn't make any sense to use the comparator to measure each round (that would just drive you crazy) so I simply use the REDDING micro seating die and dial as needed (.001/time). In this case starting from 2.22 down to 2.16. Using your fingers (my favorite method) that is seven steps.

I learned a great deal today.

It is not easy to watch seventeen things occuring at once but does make it interesting and actually made me pay stricter attention.

The mirage was so difficult I couldn't see hits at 200, even with a spotting scope. I honestly couldn't aim. I just tried to miss from the same place.

200, under these conditions, using my newly learned reloading skills.

Thanks mj52

2.279" looks good. Any chance you pulled 2.276"?

hi Erik, thank you for your response.
I think I might pulled 2.276"...if I want to do a re-test,which seating depth you'd recommend?

2.273" - 2.282", do five shot groups this time.

Hi Erik,

Here's update for seating depth test with 5 shots group, what do you think?

And tried the Scenar-L 175 also.
Don't know what cause flier on 44.5 and 45.0, i don't think i've pulled that shot.
Would 44.5 and 45.0 the node?

Thank you very much

edwin

Edwin, 2.282" was looking real good except for that one that's out. That one may have been you, or maybe reloading technique.

44.5 - 45.0 is a good node with the 175 Scenar L's.

Hi Erik, thank you very much for your response.
Will try the 2.282" at longer range over the weekend and will post the result.

We went out and shot your test yesterday and I need some help. It is a lot easier to read other peoples targets than your own. One for my wife and one for me. Any help in the loads to choose would be appreciated.

Erik,

What is your consensus on using new brass vs 1x fired brass when doing load charge or seating depth adjustments? Just curious if one starts with new brass and to finish development with new or??

I like to run pressure tests and try to isolate a window with virgin brass. I run the powder charge test again with fireformed brass and then do the seating depth testing.
So, I prefer fireformed brass for testing.

This is the first of three targets. Savage Shooter 86 helped me out on the initial calls for powder charges so I am going to make my calls on these. Please either verify my calls or tell me where I am going wrong. I need to learn this and verify at 1000 yds on Monday.

The first one is my target today after choosing 33.1gn of Varget / 105 Hybrids for my Dasher.

The first two(1.651-1.654) are separated by less than 1/8" vertical but the worst grouping. 1.660 & 1.663 are dead center vertical and the best grouping. 1.669-1.678 are center vertical across 4 different depths.
So at this point do you take the widest spread 1.669-1.678 and choose dead center 1.672 or do I choose 1.660 and1.663 and split those?

My guess is to take 1.672 and move on. What say the experts? The next post is my wife's target.

The target is my wifes. She chose 43.1 gn varget for her GAP 10 / 308.
The promising one to me is from 2.084 - 2.090. I would choose 2.087
Please comment and set me straight or confirm if you agree.

Last one I promise. This is a starting powder loading for my 308 GAP 10. The range of powder range is 41.5-43.9.
Shooting was not stellar, but I did not call any shots so I think at this point this is how it is shooting. It is a long range varmint gun and the target are from
330 yds to 875 yds. I was hoping for one of the higher charges to pan out and I think the last one did. I would call this one 43.5-43.9. Call it at 43.7 and do a seating test.
So, for the experts, Erik and Savage or anyone else, please comment on my choices and if you would make the same call.

Thanks so much.

Tim

I like 1.663" on the first target. The reason is that 1.666" is still a descent group.

2.084" on your wife's target.

Did some testing with a 6 Dasher with a 28" barrel. I used Varget, CCI 450 primers and Berger 108 BT bullets. I conducted a powder and seating depth test. I picked 32.5 as my powder charge, but if you think that there is a better option, let me know what you think!

Looks unstable. Nothing stands out to me as being really good. I know you are a good shooter, so you might want to try a different primer or bullet.
