Long range load development at 100 yards.

Update to my previous post.

Loaded up plenty at 44.1 and went back to 100. The main differences this time were; weather, the charge and the bullets were pointed.

A very different day to last time - some drizzle and ~ 4c cooler. My chrony isn't sorted yet so no numbers still.

Straight after this I went down to the range for a club day at 1000. My come ups at 1000 put me at 2720 for this load.

3 x foulers and then I was into it. I moved the tuner two increments at a time. I could have taken it further past 8, which looks like it would have really dialled it in, but I didn't bother as this isn't the final load, I wanted to get down to the club shoot and the Hybrids are scarce.

I did two groups on 2 as two shots went down the same hole with the third popping out...the rifle didn't feel quite right so I thought I would give it another go.

I shot reasonable scores as the wind was mild between 1.5 - 4 moa right. Vertical was pretty bad though.
My gut feeling is that it will lock into place - seating the bullets in the cases I would say the neck tension is way too light to get a consistent burn...its a bugger my chrony is on the blink as I suspect that would confirm. I'm not too worried as this isn't the final load - and to be on and reasonably competitive with a new calibre and rifle after three load dev trips (one of which was to simply get on paper) is pretty good.

Recoil was pretty consistent where I ended up in the top left of the frame - say 80% of the time, a push forward and I was back on.

Having said all of this - I shot reasonable scores leaking one into a 9 and an 8 in my first relay and 5 on my second relay, two of which were due to vertical.

44.1 is a common node for that bullet along with 42.5-43. Your brass won't last 3 firings if you go any higher than 44.1.

First off i want to thank Erik and everyone else for this awesome thread. I am developing a hunting load for my 300 win mag using rl22 and 200 barnes LRX. gun is a remington 700 adl with pillars and beaded boyd's stock. barrel is the stock remington 26"

here is my last target out shooting off bipod with rear bag.

I was thinking from what i have read that i should maybe run 72.3 and do a seating depth test. these were shot at 3.35

is my thinking correct? how far do you go on your seating test? was thinking .003 steps from 3.35 -3.372 does that sound reasonable or do you have to go farther? i won't be able to get to the lands and stay mag length, lands with this bullet are at 3.582 mag length is in the 3.43 range.

thanks in advance for the help

I like to cover a .030" range with seating depth. So I load 10 groups in .003" increments. I would try it with 72.0. 72.3 is also a good choice, but looks like 71.5 also hit same place vertically. Good luck and make sure you post results on this thread.

thank you, I will load 72 and retest. and yes i will report back. this info is invaluable. thanks for taking the time and helping everyone.

Sir,

It was suggested I do a seating depth test using 23.1 gr. Here are the results.

I didn't realize I had put this together EXACTLY in reverse order. Apparently there is a method to my madness and a village is missing their idiot.

Sorry, mj52

2.279" looks good. Any chance you pulled 2.276"?

hi Erik, thank you for your response.
I think I might pulled 2.276"...if I want to do a re-test,which seating depth you'd recommend?

2.273" - 2.282", do five shot groups this time.

Quick questions - would you have gone on to test 10 and 12, and depending on the outcome with those settings maybe had a look at 7?

Are you still looking for consistent vertical POI between tuner settings or just smallest group?

Yes, I always like to go past my window so I know where it ends.

Sure, but would you go for the smallest group even if it was next to the settings where it started to open up or would you go back to a setting that was more in the middle? Looking at my target now under the constraints I gave myself I can't help but wonder if I should have given 7 a go. 6 and 8 look to be hitting same vertical. i.e. do you apply your powder and seating depth principles to the tuner?

Yes, I would load between two groups that shot well. I always give myself room for error.
