Long range load development at 100 yards.

My experience is with a limited number of powders, and my work with the slower ones has luckily been with some that seem to not have a big problem that way. Working with Retumbo, and H1000 primarily helping friends with their magnums, I have not seen a big problem. Also, other friends seem to be OK with H4831 SC. I spend most of my personal shooting time in PPC land, with 133, but I have experienced RL 10 and a lot of surplus 8208 that were more challenging to deal with, as far as barrel cleaning was concerned, than I want to put up with. Some time ago, I was trying some 414 in a Swift, and was too conservative with my load, and ended up with a cleaning problem that took IOSSO to remedy. You need to make a goodly amount of pressure to clean up some of the slow ball powders. I understand that 760 is pretty much identical to 414, although I am not sure if it shares that characteristic. The classic example of this was 870 when it was available. At lower pressures, it was a mess. In the past, I shot a fair amount of IMR 4350, in a 6.5x55 and did not have any cleaning problems. It was accurate, and consistent.

I suggest that you ask about the powders that are suitable for a given caliber and bullet weight range, in a separate thread, so that you are more likely to get a large response that is specific to your situation.

Finally got a chance to do more testing. You guys suggested 52.8 grains of H4350 and i tested seating depths out to .070" off and yall thought i was in an "anti node"

Load data is on the targets, NOTE: the load with the WLR .070" off i tested before, i just wanted to retest as it was the tightest group from my last range session.

After looking these over, i am thinking on retesting the: Fed 210 GM and .070" off, Fed 210 GM and .073" off, and WLR .073" off at 300 yards to decide on a winner. Thoughts?

I decided to use this method for my new Shilen 308 barrel chambered for the 215 hybrids. First pic is of the second, third, fourth shot through the brand new barrel cleaning after each per Shilens recomendation.

Here is the target for the loads aa I was breaking in the barrel. Total rd count is now 19 rds. On the high shot for the 41.5 load, the gun recoiled to a totaly different spot than the first two shots in that group. I had also forgotten my shooting mat so bipod was resting on a piece if construction paper on concrete!

42 gave me slight ejector marks and very flat primers using Tula primers. Going to load 5 each if 41.4, 41.6, and 41.8 for next trip and also remember to bring my mat and chrony...

What amazed me was poi was never more than 1 moa from bullseye poa for the whole 2 grain increment

As you can tell from my name I'm a rookie at this and could use some help evaluating my target. First a couple of explanations. I'm trying to find a node somewhere in the 26-2700fps range so I can keep the bullet above Mach 1 at 1k yds without burning out my barrel too fast. My Savage M12 F/TR has a very tight chamber and from previous testing I know that if I go above 42.5 gr of Varget with a 175 gr bullet I start getting pressure signs. And conversely, if I go below 40 gr I'm below my 2600 fps goal. Hence the narrow range of targets. Here's my specs;
Lapua Brass fire formed
CCI BR2 primers
Varget powder
Berger 175 gr Match Long Range Boat Tail

and finally my target:

FTRRookie, something is not right with your gun or load development technique. With ES that high, you will have trouble finding a consistent 1,000 yard load.

All these were seated .020" off the lands. I'm hoping changing depth will help that. This is my first test with these bullets, I had been using 175 VLDs before and didn't have the ES problem. It was always low teens or single digit. But I had them jammed .010".

I have been f/l resizing but just ordered a neck sizer. Maybe that will help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When I put together this batch to test I also made up 3 rnds with the bullet jammed .010" just for shits and giggles. They were the last group I fired for the day and I didn't include them on this target. Wish I had because they all went in 1 ragged hole. Maybe the gun just likes them jammed.

I have just finished a day of shooting with my 243 Win.
First target was shot off the bench with front stand and rear bag setup. Second target was shot off the bench with an Atlas bipod setup.

Group 1 ES 34 SD 13 45.6grains N-165
Group 2 ES 23 SD 9.6 46.0grains N-165
Group 3 ES 29 SD 12 46.5grains N-165
Group 4 ES 16 SD 6.6 46.9grains N-165
Group 5 ES 19 SD 8 47.4grains N-165

I did shoot hotter than these loads and got some pressure signs.
I'm thinking there is a node between group 4 & 5 .

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Eric,

I'm perplexed. Instead of shooting the 300 yd match with you guys, I decided to blow off the 70 rounds of freshly annealed brass at 100 yds range so I could load it for Nationals/Worlds. I shot 14- 5 shot groups into a 300 yd f-class target. The two upper groups were shot with a 300 yd zero, and then I screwed the turret down as far as I could for the remainder.

My question: Do you think the rain drops made group 7Left and 10Right open up into the nasty holes they are when the bullets hit them? And the group low in the x-ring was caused by rain drops pushing the bullets down?

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I went ahead and "freshened" his crown when we finished that morning... He doesn't know, and I didn't want to make a big deal about me helping him out.

What a nice guy. Shooters are the friendlest people.

Hell Im such a nice guy Id recrown the whole long shots teams rifles the same way, wouldn't even charge them for it. Its the smoothest rock Ive ever seen, lol. Problem is they'd probably still beat us. ;D

Ftr Rookie, I had the same gun. Try your load about .005" off the lands. Mine never had any consistency untill I got closer to the lands. I have a new barrel now hence my post. Trying seating depths myself right now.
