Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

I drive a one ton, 4 wheel drive diesel dually. 600 mile range on a tank of fuel, 5 minutes to fill up and back on the road. Odometer is showing over 526,000 miles. It is just a matter of time before we start seeing a "miles driven" tax to make up for the lost revenue on fuel taxes due to electrics. Probably be next to no savings on driving an electric in the end.

We're already seeing that with solar panels on homes .... minimum electric bills. It's BS.

I think the miles driven tax will show up at the same time as insurance companies want the dongle plugged in to your DLC port ... or you're required to run an app when driving.

At some point road tax, surcharges would have to be assessed(because of loss gas tax). Than as electric demands rise and SUPPLY drops(brown outs and other interruptions occur) due to elimination of coal and natural gas generation, no nuclear plants added. Electrical rates sky rocket to reduce driving/demand.

Exactly right! They have to get that tax money from somewhere. In Montana I think we pay about .47 cents on the gallon. If they are no longer getting the tax from fossil fuels, they will get it from whatever other source people are using for transportation

Like I said, had nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with control. I believe it will come with state inspections. Those who don't have state inspections, you will! My state has an emissions test. It checks to make sure your gas cap works!

We already have state inspections, but the we don't have emission tests. The next county over has them.

Maybe the state inspections will start logging your miles and that's how your tax bill will be calculated. You owe $20 for the inspection and $459 for the miles driven. Because my personal property tax, for continuing to own my car that I already paid sales tax on, wasn't enough.

Diesel prices are high right now (we are at $4.79 gal) but in my 5th Gen Cummins 2500 I get about 25 mpg driving at 60 mph on a flat stretch of highway so I’ve slowed down to that speed since I only get about 19 mpg when driving 70-75 mph like I used to do. That is very impressive economy considering the emissions system is still in place, the truck has large 35” x 12” aftermarket tires, weighs around 7,700 lbs empty, and can haul a payload of up to 19,400 lbs when required.

What can your electric sedan haul? Lol!

My average mileage isn’t so good because I use the truck to haul work trailers, tractors, boats, a camper, etc. But that’s the average for the entire life of the truck with town driving, hauling, and normally driving 70-75 mph on the highway over the last 2 years. Pic was taken a couple weeks ago and since I’ve started driving 60 mph my average is already up to 16.2 mpg

FWFW both OSHA and NFPA advise lithium-ion batteries should be stored at room temperature; should never be stored in a hot vehicle; should not be charged at temperatures below 32 f or above 95 f; should never be charged indoors (e.g. in a garage); should be discarded after exposure to a physical shock (e.g. a fender bender.) Ever see video of an EV battery fire? Look on YouTube.

Exactly! There is insufficient electricity generation and grid capacity capable of supplying a huge increase in demand of this sort overnight. China couldn't build us enough solar panels, windmills, and central battery units fast enough lol. I waiting to hear the plan from the Department of Energy which was chartered to develop in 1977 folowing the OPEC imbargo, to make us energy independent? Oh that's right, its another political government agency.

I should get a horse. Then I’ll ask the Guberment to put up watering troughs and hitching posts because I’m so “green”!

A lot of people half-joke that they'll start cycling if gas hits $5 / gallon. I'm pretty sure I'll eat more during & after a ride than they would have spent on gas.

I rode 45 miles on Friday. My power meter says it was about 1500 calories (~1400 kJ). I ate 1/2 a large pizza for dinner. I'm pretty sure it was a wash.

that’s awesome!!

Here, when you get an inspection, they plug into the vehicle computer to make sure that all the emission controls are working. That info goes straight to Austin immediately. Do you think that the vehicles computer doesn't keep track of how many miles you have driven since the last inspection? You must show proof of liability ins to get an inspection and you have to have insurance and an inspection to get tags for your vehicle. They have all the bases covered.

The car computer has your total miles but doesn't care about inspections. But it's moot, the state knows your last inspection date and gets miles driven from the computer (again), so they get all of the same data in the end.

The inspection systems are usually checking for the status of the readiness monitors, to make sure you didn't just clear the codes before rolling in. Non-Emission inspections in Virginia doesn't check codes, they just look for the light. I'm sure they'll fix the gap in their system shortly.

They don’t offend me. They make sense for some people, but not for me. I’m glad we still have options, but that will probably lessened in the near future.

After 45 miles..........I’d be dead!
