Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

All the nuclear waste is still on site at the nuclear plants- all of it since the 60’s and early 70’s. The plant in arkansas is on its 29th and 30th refuel this year. That means the complete fuel load of spent fuel of 59 reactors is still there and its not an issue. Build the plants. They are expensive as hell to build- alabama power just built one. Multiple billions spent but its still the cheapest and easiest way to go.

Are nuke plants profitable? First Energy was goi g to shut down Perry and Davis Bessy because they were unprofitable with cheap natural gas power plants. Big scandal over $150 million a year bailout for us electric payers

I read most of this thread and several articles on cost of ownership for three to five years, but I don't hear anyone talk about the resale value of EVs. Some of you just mentioned the cost of replacement batteries and that makes me wonder if there will ever be a market for used EVs. If not it tells me that I have to pay more for the car. I might save some money running it, but it sounds like I will take a beating when it is time to replace it. Am I wrong?

I can't speak to pure electric vehicle but my wife drives a 2017 Prius Prime Advanced. Price new was $34,000 when she bought it as a leftover four years ago. There was a $7,100 federal tax credit that dropped the purchase price to $27,000. She drives it 25 miles a day five days a week plus short errands on the weekend. The secondary battery will take it about 35 miles even with the A/C running so the gasoline engine never runs. A couple times a year I hide the charging cable to get rid of the gas that's been in the tank for six months. Stabil gets expensive. The fuel consumption gauge hasn't been reset since she bought it and it claims 137 MPG.

I'm looking for something to replace my Mercedes that's on lease. We stopped at a Mazda dealer as the CX-5 Signature is one I'm seriously considering. A bit of confusion ensued while I was talking to the sales manager and an over-achieving young salesman had their appraiser look at her car. It has 25,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition but....they offered her $27,500 cash, $550 more than it cost, even if we didn't buy a car from them.

A year ago or possibly a year from now could be a very different story. American car buyers have a really short memory so the value of hybrid or electric used cars will no doubt drop a lot if or when gas prices drop to "only" three bucks a gallon.

It has been around for five years. Originally offered only in NY, DC and California. No advertising support from Toyota so not many people knew about it and the federal tax credit wasn't easy to find either. My wife's third Prius and certainly the best although there were no problems with the other two at all.

I'm nearly there. I drive a 2007 Tacoma extra cab, 4.0 engine, 6 speed. Only 117K on it, still tight and runs like a striped ass ape. I told my wife the other day, I always wanted an old Toyota 4x4, hell.... I have one! 22R's were some of the best engines ever built, bar none.
Tacoma are Great Reliable trucks, buddy has one , it has 254k miles on it and runs great

If Joe Biden wants to take your money and buy me an EV, I'll accept it and thank you very much. In fact I'm such a militant prick I may demand that he take your money and buy me an EV. If you can't beat'em, might as well join'em. When we all become dependents and get our pocket money and electrons from Unicorn farts, life will be good.

My brother just got the Tesla model 3. He likes it a lot. Very sterile looking car, very quiet, layout is insanely efficient. He had a Nissan Frontier but sold it due to gas being so high. He’s saving about $400 a month in gas at current prices. The only down side is that the car was $50k.

Also, no routine maintenance, and since he lives in Atlanta, there are charging stations every 20 feet. He normally plugs in at night though and 8 hours gets him 270 miles. He has a mode that shuts off charging at 80% so it doesn’t cycle the battery.

The car is very fast and agile. Very easy to drive. It feels like a sports car.
