Of course not. I'm not sure what I said that you'd get that from. It's just another game. I personally prefer short range BR for score. I hope that's not a statement that makes anyone mad. Lol! Tuners are great for that game too. So are wind flags where you can use them. Don't laugh too soon. Everybody laughed at flags for long range before Bart set a record or so and kicked everybody's arse with flags..and tuners. I understand flags aren't always going to be practical at a prs match but the more info a shooter has regarding the wind, the better. The sooner they come to that conclusion, the better, too. Several are already using tuners.Well ok, are you eliminating a customer base in the prs crowd ?
No matter, let’s circle back to short range and tell me what advice would you give to a shooter that wants to beat a guy like Jeff that’s 200 years old and all that wisdom ?
Get off the computer and go shoot.Well I must have misinterpreted , the first three sentences of your previous post kinda lead me there. My apologies .
I’m not a prs shooters either but from the reports the numbers for attendance are very impressive and I’m pretty sure most venders have taken notice as well.
Back to SR and my friend @JEFFPPC who for example is using the same tuner and same flags equipment etc. as I do, what can I do this winter to beat him next spring ?
Good stuff Bart! Thanks. Not sure I would've found it with a good spankin, but a few years ago, I had a front screw barely bottom out on a glued and screwed rifle. In fact, I shot it like that at your place with the concrete monkey. You weren't around. Drove me crazy shooting in the 3's. I was a little embarrassedI helped derail this thing so to get back on track.
One thing that (I believe) holds shooters back is not knowing when their rifle stops shooting and I’m talking mechanical issues. Shooters are often too quick to blame themselves for poor performance and not their equipment. This usually results in a lot of frustration and a slump.
So if your shooting has dropped off try something different. Try a different rifle or Shoot a buddy’s rifle. Have a buddy that’s shooting well, shoot yours. This way you can start to figure out where the problem is.
CRAZY TIP (DON’T Laugh) - SPANK IT! Yep Spank your rifle. Hold your rifle vertically (unloaded of course) by the barrel in front of you and smack the buttstock. Listen for any unusual rattling noises. Do this with the bolt in and out of the rifle.
It sounds stupid, but it’s the first thing I do when I check a rifle that’s not shooting. At the Tack Driver a friend’s Rifle was acting up throwing shots. I gave the rifle a quick spank and detected a strange rattle. Long story short the screws to tighten the Picatinny rail were bottomed out (blind drilled holes) and not holding the rail in place. The list is long of problems I’ve found this way.
Bart
I've seen your targets Jackie, with no sighters. Pretty amazing to me how anyone can shoot that well trusting their flag/wind call from 30 minutes prior without firing at least one sighter. That's just unreal or maybe even impossible around here, but either way..congrats and kudos on some awe inspiring shooting that I've seen from your targets. Just crazy good!I shoot both Short Range Group and Score. Been doing it to close to 30 years. I am fairly good at both, but as of late, I am shooting more Score. It tends to suite my shooting style a little more than Group, as I am not much of a runner.
I would really like to add something to the thread content, but after reading it’s entirety, I don’t think I have anything much to offer…………..except.
I spend a lot, and I practice a lot.
Ahhhhh.....But sometimes you need to spend them coins for betterI thought it was,"work smarter, not harder"?
You pay a price but you live in beautiful country SPJ. I am in good shape with case production for the coming season. Just keeping my bench manners sharp with springer pellet rifle at 25 yards daily. Shooting .250 and under groups at 25yds will keep you focused. First 200 yd winter bench match up on Rockton Mt is coming up. Some winter shoots there make me think I am where your at, snowing and blowing so hard you can't see the backstop much less the target. But we get great turnouts for these matches, actually better then the 3 different summer matches we run. Stay warm and dry.I have 200 cases turned and loaded ready to fire form. Just need a little break in the weather.
How bout ya’ll ?
Pick the coldest day for your barrel to cool faster if you don't haveI have 200 cases turned and loaded ready to fire form. Just need a little break in the weather.
How bout ya’ll ?
By some mystery of the Universe, these ended up with cores seated this week.Forgive the interruption but while y’all SR guys are arguing about your tuners some of us LR guys will be tuning brass and getting ready to do some fire forming in 2 ft of snow and sub zero temps.
I'm not real smart but I can lift heavy stuff.Wednesday looks decent, but my poor old barrel will probably frost over in sub zero temps and maybe me tooooo…
About time you got something done.![]()
Yepper !! December has been brutal....It seems to me that out-working will also mean out-spending here in 2022 moving into 2023.
Prices of everything are just crazy, if you even find what you need. But I think that's the case for all of us, unfortunately. Kinda gets back to my post a few pages back that said it was too expensive to get into this game...while driving a $80,000 truck, pulling a $50,000 boat. Ya gotta want it. If someone doesn't want it bad enough to make the financial commitment, I doubt seriously that they'll be willing to do the work either. I'm far, far from wealthy but the cost of this game is still the easiest part of it. With the exception of those few shooters that do all it takes to chase points. That's just another level of cost due to travel to as many big points matches as possible. Not to mention the work to be competitive at the very top of the game. Some will remember Jim Wooten, a very good IBS score shooter from I think one of the Carolinas, maybe Georgia. The year he won the IBS SOY, he told me how many miles he traveled to matches that year and I want to say he told me 50,000 miles. Don't hold me to that number but it was a crazy number, regardless. Now that's buying success to a point but it wasn't without the work either...not by a long way. It was very much both! Haven't seen or heard from Jim in a long time. Hope he's still around and doing well. Super nice guy and he definitely earned that SOY plaque. I think it was about 2009 or so. Only a few chase it to that point and we can compete and have a great time without being a point champion. But he wanted it and clearly was committed to it.It seems to me that out-working will also mean out-spending here in 2022 moving into 2023.
