62 eld vt

Just noticed that VV has updated their load data to include the 62gr ELD-VT from a .223. Their load data indicates that a max charge of N540 will push it at 3200 fps, and a max charge of N135 and N140will both exceed 3100 fps. Makes me wonder how much more case volume would really be needed to gain an extra 150-200 fps. I don't think an AI would quite get it there, but it seems like a 22 Nosler or 22 Valkyrie would be able to do it.

223 Ackley should get you there no problem.

Something odd here.
JBM's stability calculator says the 62 eldvt is unstable in a 9 twist barrel at the same RPM's that it's stable in a 8 twist.
Stability has nothing to do with how the bullet got spinning.
I'm asking Hornady.

ETA. Hornady tech says if it's spinning at least 260K it's stable.

High 3000s with a 9 twist SHOULD work. Does it? I haven't seen anybody show good results with a 9 twist.

Its of particular interest to me because my Savage Model 12 is a 9 twist. I'm currently running 53gr vmax out of it, and I'm happy with what it does out to 300 yds. If my 20 practical ever arrives, it will give me nearly identical performance with even less recoil. Then the question becomes what to do with the savage. I've always been fascinated by the 223AI. If the stupid bullet would behave like math says it should, it would be pretty cheap to rechambering the barrel to an AI, and fire forming a bunch of LC 556 brass to see what it could do with this bullet. I've pushed 75gr amax at close to 3000 fps out of my 8 twist service rifle upper in the past. I won't say that it wasn't hard on the Win brass that I was using, but it made a significant difference in my 600yd scores. It seems like adding a little case capacity, another 6" of barrel, slowing the twist slightly, dropping the bullet weight by 13gr, and using a stronger 556 case should go a long ways towards increasing the velocity. Just not sure if I'd be able to run it accurately or not. If nobody has been able to make a 9 twist work, then its a moot point.

Barrel is 26” 1-8” Bartlein chambered in.223 AI, Lapua brass.

OK, you finally got my attention enough to buy a box of 62 ELD-VTs.

I plan to shoot them in my new 1:7 twist Shilen 416R SS 26-inch barrel that I put on my Savage 12 FV.
At first you turned me off them when several compared them to 75 gr Match bullets - I could never get them to shoot in my 26-inch factory barrel 1:9 twist.
Before you comment on twist, the factory barrel shot 77 SMKs and Nosler CCs great. I measured the twist at 1:8.75 so it was slightly faster than spec.

The new barrel shoots 85.5 Bergers and 88 ELD-Ms well.
It actually shoots 73 Bergers, 73 ELD-Ms, 77 SMKs, 80 gr Bergers and 90 Bergers among the best.

We'll see if the 62 ELD-VTs will shoot in the new barrel. So far, I haven't shot any bullets under 69 grs.
I load for Optimum Bullet Time, so my loads will probably show less MV than some of you concentrate on.
I am shooting at the 12th reflection of the barrel shock wave to minimize barrel harmonics and to not flirt with P-Max with the heavy bullets.
But, using OBT for my loads, my new barrel has averaged 0.218 for 249 5-round groups with 16 different bullets from 69 grains to 90 grains and 25.7% of my 5-round groups average under 0.200.
I'll let you know how it turns out in about a week or so.

Waste of time over 4K they don't make it to target.
By high 3000s, I think he meant near 3100fps, not 3900 fps,

As for 1:9, it sounds like a few people have tried it. I have a few pounds of N540, so based on VVs data, I should be able to get up to that speed in my 26" 223 barrel. I might give it a try just to see what can be done. My piddly contribution to the vast wealth of knowledge that you guys are here sharing to help the rest of us out. I won't get to it until this winter though. Too many other things on the priority list at the moment.

That looks VERY promising. How did that load group? How did the primers look?

Its interesting that you're getting +3400 fps out of a 223ai, but there are a number of people that aren't sure if a 22BR can push the bullet 3500 fps. Before buying a new rifle or barrel, I'll see what I can get the bullet to do out of my 9 twist factory barrel. I'm not going to hold my breath since there are better shooters than me who have already tried. I just consider it to be doing my due diligence. My barrel really liked the old 75gr A-Max and would shoot it exceptionally well out to 500 yds (never pushed it farther) so maybe it will happen to like the 62gr ELD-VT as well.

Well so far accuracy is good to 300..no problems with bullets coming apart at the distances I am shooting.
22br 28in 1:7/5 (twist was supposed to be 1:8) velocity 3,340. ...Maybe after some wear things will change. (Only 350 or so rounds on it) it is going to be my go to coyote set up....at least for now.

It also likes the 53g vmax at 3,650.

No 4k+. Just dont shoot consistent even at 3800. We call at night and use thermals so we need flat shooting!!! 450 yds max is comfortable for us and no time to range. Around here count to 3 long gone. I hope somebody proves me wrong, really wanted to shoot these.
