62 ELD-VT IN 8 TW?

Well. First try didn't go so well.
24" 1:8 twist Wylde, ~ 3100 fps. 2.350 COAL - jumping 170 thousandths. The boattail does protrude below the body/shoulder junction.
Two four shot groups.
1 group was 6" at 100 yards. The other group 4" and one shot not on the target. Assuming it made it there, it would be over 6" group. [Hard to call those groups].
I'm trying to develop a load to load from an ar15 mag with the front cut out.

Any idea what is wrong? Does it turn out that the 62 eld vt is jump sensitive?
First thing I would do is make sure you really have an 8 twist barrel. Time for a cleaning rod test. Does not sound good. Let us know.

It's a 24" ar15 barrel - so ~ the first 2 1/2 inches [do i have that right?] don't have rifling. And, it's supposed to be [is marked] 7.7. The barrel is from Kreiger.
The rod turns just under 3 times in the rifling => 21.5/2.95 = 7.3. [assuming there's 21.5" of rifling].

If it really is 1:7.3; the rpms would be real close to 300K - which might explain a missing hit.

Update.
I pulled the bullets on the last 4 rounds and reseated them at 20/1000's off the lands.
3 shots went into .440" at 100 yards.
Net: Looks like these don't jump long distances well.

That destroys my dream of using them for prone rapid - but they are fine sub for prone slow.

Both my 9 twist and 8 twist 223 s with Saami chambers shoot them fine. 3100 fps. Loading 2.45 oal for the 9 twist and 2.43 oal for the 8 twist. Both touch the lands at 2.5” but not much bullet in the case neck that far out. ( didn’t measure BTO method on these two)

Thinking of trying a few groups in my 22-250 AI that’s got .050 FB and 8 twist but may screw them apart going 3500 fps or so ….??

Looking forward to your test results with the. 22-250AI. Hopefully they stay together for you.

Paul, they cut nice clean holes at 100 yds out of my 22-250 AI. 26” barrel, 40 grs of N550 seated at 2.575” oal and 1/2” moa for 3 shots. It’s a stout load so work up to it but talk about a screamer…3592, 3597 and 3600 fps!! Shot one at 40.5 grs but bolt sticky and that extra 1/2 gr of powder sent it to 3701…. Obviously high pressure for 1/2 gr of powder to get another 100 fps.

I m perfectly fine at 3600 and 40 grs of N550. If more shooting proves it s pretty high pressure wise I can live with 39.5 grs and something around 3550 fps. Work up and those little V/T s are going to be a varmints worse nightmare!!

Wow, that’s going to be impressive on a coyote.

I'm right there with you.. Shoot a 22cm 1:9 twist 22" douglas barrel- running 3550-3600 with varget. I finally took off my ATN digital scope to get a proper picture of precision.. 0.25"-0.6" all day with that ATN but never felt comfortably interpreting the results because they didnt tell much a story with their pattern. Knocking a 4" steel plate with that much energy and that quick just puts a smile on your face! happy shooting!

I just got two boxes of them this week. In between chores and grass cutting I had a chance to shoot a few.

VV N133, around 22.6-22.8 seems to be a good spot. Seating just at the lands, 2.482 COAL. Weight sorted Lapua brass. Kreiger HV 8 twist. Target is 160 yards.

223….

I'm thinking about trying the 62 vt in my 1/8 carbine with 223 wyde chamber. Going to use a standard mag and load them as a 73 gr eldm, since the 62 and 73 are exactly the same length and probably the same bullet, just less lead.

I’m trying to come up with a load to use the 62gr eld-vt in my 224 Valkyrie bolt action. Can’t find anything from Hornady on suggestions. Thinking of using CFE223.

Curious. What powder(s) did you use?

Just Shooters World Match.
Note: in a follow up post when seated 20/1000 off the lands, 4 rounds went into a .440 group.
My conclusion is the 62 2ld vt doesn't like to jump long distances.
Good to know. I'll be running these (hopefully) in a bolt gun (22 Nosler) mostly, which I hope to get back from my gunsmith shortly with two fresh barrels. If those tubes don't like the VT, will try in a 1-7" A/R. Thanks for posting.
