62 ELD-VT IN 8 TW?

Had pretty good luck with them till today. All went well till the barrel got pretty warm, then they started spraying over the target. Pulled out a few 60vmax, same powder charge, no problems.
Barrel cool to warm, no issue, barrel warm to hot, no bueno. Think I will try some 69 TMK and some 70 RDF and see what happens.

I have a few 8 twist barrels I was planning on chambering in .22 Nosler, specifically intended to shoot the 62 ELD-VT. I now see that the recommended twist is 1-7". For those of you shooting this new bullet, can you tell me whether you have had good or bad experience in an 8" twist? Hate to have to buy additional barrels - but will if I'm running in the wrong direction with this new bullet.
8 is fine in a 223 shooting the 62 eld vt

I launch them in a 22-204 1:8 26" at a low node @3400 and they are fantastic! Less than 8 moa from 200 zero to 600 yds, very accurate with them just touching the lands. Bill

Well - finally got my .22 Nosler back out to the range today in my search for a load with that 62 ELD-VT. My prior trip gave me some 1/3MOA groups with IMR4166. Today, I focused on IMR8208BXR and things are looking up a bit - coming in a bit better on average, sweet spot yielded .255" Maybe a few more tweaks.....
That made my day as I only had a pound or two of that 4166 - and lots of XBR. I'm thinking this bullet might work out pretty well on those critters.

What velocity do you think you’ll get from this?
I've run four powders for testing (Varget, IMR 8208 XBR, IMR 4166 and Reloader 15) and my velocity ran from 2,850 to 3,100 on the loads I have tried so far. I haven't pushed the velocity up to pressure signs at all yet. Best accuracy in this rig is with IMR 4166 and 8208, with the 8208 looking a bit better. This is in a bolt gun, running 28" tube. So far, I'm happy enough with the 8208 load accuracy at 3,080 to maybe stop there. Maybe a few minor tweaks.

My CFE223 loads are turning 3336 FPS avg thru my 22-250. And, not a max load. I did push them a little hotter, but groups opened up. My groups are usually around 1" or less, but I'm using a Pulsar thermal, normally using the PIP at 4X. This load works really well on coyotes, so I'm calling it good for now.

Paul, they cut nice clean holes at 100 yds out of my 22-250 AI. 26” barrel, 40 grs of N550 seated at 2.575” oal and 1/2” moa for 3 shots. It’s a stout load so work up to it but talk about a screamer…3592, 3597 and 3600 fps!! Shot one at 40.5 grs but bolt sticky and that extra 1/2 gr of powder sent it to 3701…. Obviously high pressure for 1/2 gr of powder to get another 100 fps.

I m perfectly fine at 3600 and 40 grs of N550. If more shooting proves it s pretty high pressure wise I can live with 39.5 grs and something around 3550 fps. Work up and those little V/T s are going to be a varmints worse nightmare!!

We are shooting the 22bra at 3470. If you are topping out at 3600 with a 22-250, I'm going to say we are running about as fast as it will comfortably run in the 22bra.

You re only 130 fps under my 22-250 Ack Imp …. I d say your “up to pressure” for sure! Those things do a job on varmits.

Mid summer I picked up a couple hundred of the 62gr ELD-VT's to try in a couple of 8 twist .223 Wylde AR's. I tried Varget, Benchmark and TAC going off load data on the Hodgdon site. I basically worked up to max load shown on the site and couldn't get anything to group better than 3" at 100 yards, more like 3.5". Are these bullets not really suited for the .223 AR platform? I was loading for mag length at 2.250". One of the AR's is a 20" Bear Creek. For a budget AR upper it actually shoots the 55 and 60 Vmax very well giving consistent 3/4" groups so I was surprised when I ended up with the shotgun pattern group with the ELD-VT's. Am I missing something here with these bullets or just luck of the draw and better to use a 7 twist?

I tried the same thing. At mag length [2.340 with a 'windowed' mag] they [two different 4 shot groups] shot 6" groups at 100 yards.
At .020 off the lands, the first and only group I tried was 3/4".
I didn't try to tweak the load. I stopped right there because I was only interested in them at mag length.

My opinion of the 62gr ELD-VT is to follow Hornady's 1-8 twist rate and for an AR barrel reduced free bore by 50%. For bolt action, acis magazine, saami free bore, lengthen COL to your maximum. Then shoot their eyes out Ralphy!

If shooting the 8 twist I suggest you stay below 3500 fps. 3500 fps is 300k spin. These bullets shoot wonderfully 20 jump below 3500 fps, but do not shoot well above that speed. They do not like being overspun like the typically stubby varmint bullets.

Truthfully, they DO NOT NEED to be shot any faster than 3500 to still surpass the old style low BC bullets downrange at even up to 4000 fps. They simply do not slow down nearly as fast or get blown around like the old school varmint bullets.

Has anyone actually been successful making these shoot out of a 1-9"? I've got a .22-250 sitting here that might be a candidate.
