Good for a laugh

Now gents, in regard to my stability, I would mention that years of patrol in a Charger has placed my bubble firmly in the middle. Weebles wobble, they do not fall down. And in regard to Mr. MAjestics comments, I might add I just spent ten days in his home state and see that they still wear straw hats and drive buggies there, and it was 70 degrees outside! Snow is no excuse!

During my absence from the forum I see that NO ONE has offered much in the way of innovation (maybe shocked by the brilliance of my hone technique?) so I have to register my dissapointment. I do have to thank Josh for bringing to mind the most important aspect of accuracy...the feral NY groundhog! Now that makes me want to start a thread on the proper scope mounting and leveling process to make sure that the Coriopolis effect is counteracted when taking shots over long ranges (50 yards and more).

Good to see you back !
Did you get to twist up Mr majestics barrel ?
I may have stretched the true on my 900yd group ?
But ground hogs at fifty plus ??!
Stability ??s

It's not the snow! Being involved with law inforcement he spent most of his time in the evidence locker. Don't make him a bad person though.

I preferred hanging out in the armory, actually. Made some good deals on estate items....

MrM, Shoebox and I offically invite you to a special groundhog hunt. However, you must bring your own firearm. It can be your bestest one, really. It would be helpful if you told us now the length, profile, current twist rate of your barrel and whether you are left or right handed...that we we can work out our...uh...hunt plan. :)

Hey shoebox, I got to thinking during my hiatus that if a person was left handed, the tork of the recoil may offset the Coraopolis effect if the barrel were a right twist and of course in the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite effect for the righty...your thoughts?

And my professors were all perfectly sane and understood such vagarities (not vulgarities) as the difference between Calvanism and Armenianism, dispensationalism, and one even liked firearms. Amazing. never see that today. i will stop there before I venture into politics. This thread has been way too much fun and so enlighteneing, why ruin it/

No, I went to the civilized part of PA, Picksburgh. He lives with the buggy types, in the east. But I took care of it Shoe, I invited him up for a hunt! ;)
50 yards is a tough shot with a derringer. i do it nearly every day though, being a trained firearms instructor. I find that if I hold it sideways it takes care of the Coriopolis effect. On a groundhog rifle more care must be taken to make sure the scope is not twerked by idiotcentric rings. I find if I lap them with shoe polish and playground sand they do not mar my scopes, and they are easier to get idiotcentric.

Cheers,
Snert

Coriopolis effect ( head ache coming on )
That's amazing I use the same method
With my rings !
You are so well informed !!
I think that when we get some of the boy up for a hunt, and do a bit of work tunning the best of the rigs , they will be truly astounded !
It will be interesting to see how many hogs get hit out past fifty!
Oh do you use the ten shot rule ? 25- 50 yds 15 out to 60 ?
Dont mean to brag but I hit a rabbit at 55 measured in three shots ,my 2506ai is extremely accurate !!
PS
Your trip away work or fun ?

Coriopolis effect
One property I hunt is on the equator, which causes all sorts of problems when calculating shot placement, when
Facing north I tend to miss to the right, south to the left, east shoots high, west shoots low,
I know that the 2506 ai 80 grn at 3800 don't shoot very flat, so to compensate
I keep my shots under 25 yards that way you hardly notice the affect !!

And yes the 2506ai is a little under gunned for rabbit's, that's why shot placement is so important !!

Really ground hogs past 50 ??

All i can say is you must have an accurate rifle
So what rig do you use ? (Out past 50;))

:eek:Told you I was under gunned, lucky I'm building a 25/26 nosler ! That should straighten him out ?
With the shv 5x20x56 I should be able hit him out to 45+ yards
Might load up some 100 ttsx just to be safe !!

Professor Corey is a gentleman from New York and is recognized as the Worlds Foremost Authority. He has the answers to the question, Why?
He recently passed at the age of 102.
Now I remember, snert always sat at the front eating chicken wings !
Professor Corey used to stare at us repeating over & over
WHY? WHY? For a funny man he sure look depressed ??

As I mentioned in an earlier answer, I have developed a honing method for my bushing dies. It involves a chicken bone (properly seasoned) and JB paste. Two commonly available components in any shooters bag. It is the PROCESS that together with the proper tools that created concentric brass, the pancreas of all accuracy endeavors.

Snert!

I just had a strike of smart!
If you would use a Roadrunner bone instead of that chicken bone your velocities would really go up. And as long as I'm releasing heretofor unlearned secrets, you will want to use finely ground road gravel mixed with wd40 instead of JB paste. After all everyone knows you can go really fast on roads and paste is only good for using on one's tooth.

Just remember, don't share these super secrets with the great unwashed. Otherwise the whole world will know! :)

While in PA (western) I visited Coraopolis which of course the Coriopolis effect is named after. I was studying the effect at Wings, Suds and Spuds and realized Spud, er...I mean Potato, has not chimed in here. So I visited the facebook page for Wings, Suds and Spuds and lo and behold I did see that Mr. M was caught on camera there. Yep, about 1/3 way down the page he was sighted delivering vodka. (I was shocked cause I thought everyone knows corn is better than potatoes...with the exception of our Potato...but anyhow) I suggest folks visit the page. I did not provide a link, because of moles etc like Josh who might tell the CIA. But for those who want to take a minute, really it is worth a look to see Mr. M in his full beach glory. Maybe someone else can bring the link up here, but I do not want that responsibility.

Back to the Coraopolis effect. I am not certain that Shoe's problem originated from his geographic location near the equator, because I often see the same problem while at the range or in the field, when I am watching OTHER guys shoot. That left, then right, then low, then left, then high thing seems to be more common than the equator would explain. I never have the issue, so it must be some other undiscovered gremlin that my long hours of winter mental practice overcomes unknowingly.

Now Shoe, when I was talking about "at 50" I must have mistakenly failed to carefully note I meant "kilometers". (As in Clicks, which are often referred to here in the optics section on scope adjustments.)

I have found that with the proper scope base, taking care to mount my scope idiotcentric and lapping the rings, twisting my barrel and doing the suggested chamber concentrating, (your plan works good when wildcatting from 22 Hornet to 416 WB) I can get enough velocity and bullet stability to reach out there, and I measure my distances by pacing off the distance or using the odometer on my 1971 Ford F150, which are both more accurate, taking into account gully's, roadway cuts, hillsides and small forests.

I think then, based upon my experience, your 25/26 Nosler AI with a 30 inch twisted Bartlein would be sufficent for bunnies of that size, if you go with the monotone bullet like the TSX.

Heres to research at Wings, Sudsa nd Spuds

PS, Dare ya to post Mr M's video!

Hey Snert,
No endangered species is safe when in pursuit of the ultimate accuracy and velocity.
At least I didn't give away the real lube secret of Spotted Owl fat blended with ground asphalt from Daytona . I quite cleverly slipped in WD40 and road gravel, so SSSSSH, keep it a secret.
