Why is AR Comp the Red Headed Step Child?

They should rename it. It gets no respect because people thinks it a 223 ball powder. If it surpasses all powders like that they should call it Tempmaster or something like that.

Alliant has done a poor job marketing its temp resistant powders. No offense, I love Alliant powders. The new Enduron powders are only very so so for temperature resistance from the tests I've seen and since it says EXTREME on the bottle they sell a lot of powder.

Truth be told, I had developed AR-Comp(TM) with Bofors for the US Army, for use in the M118LR back in 2009. We had been getting some static about Reloder(R) 15 temp response, but the Army personnel we were briefing were not particularly interested in changing from Reloder 15, so we introduced it to the canister market.
Below is some temp response data in a hot 5.56 load. In this test, with this lot of IMR 8208XBR it went up a little at hot. This Hodgdon powder is generally pretty temp stable in my experience though. As others have said, AR-Comp is pretty darn temp stable in all the loads I have tested it in. We use a boatload of it here at Federal, and we changed it to our primary propellant in both the 168gr and 175gr Gold Medal Match 308 Win loads.
Please give it a try. I believe you will like it.
Shoot well,
Paul

Maybe we should rename it Reloder 14?

I'm Thankful for AR Comp and I won't bitch about any of the other Monday Morning Quarteback, Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda's stuff... LOL :)

I'm thankful Paul shared the info he did as well.
Guess this is the thanks he gets for doing that and likely won't bother sharing any further great inside info...

I bet this thread will sell lots of AR Comp.

I know I'm getting some this week!! I think I might be down to three powders after it's all said and done. Ar comp, r16, and Alliant Lt 32.

I'm going to make up my own test and test all of our powders. Should be very easy to do
