Who Knows the 222 Remington?

thank you for your comments. looking at options for new stock. I see a lot of nice rifles with Boyds stocks. some of them appear/noted to be worked on after purchase, new finish etc, almost like it is used as a blank. egg shoot is impressive

When shooting with a bipod and rear bag and you get vertical stringing, or two groups vertical of each other, and everything is tight, try removing the rear sling swivel stud. It can inconsistently drag on the rear bag during recoil. It worked for my Sako 22PPC.

I appreciate your interest. I won’t be selling it. It shoots too well and I like to take it out once or twice a year to shoot a couple groups.

What reamer was used in your 222? I picked up a 788 with severely worn out 222 barrel. Thinking about re-barreling it. Will be looking for a 222 reamer to acquire. No idea what works best on this cartridge.

I will definitely get a Shilen SM.

TIA.

The barrel is a Shilen prefit for a Savage target action. I don’t know what reamer Shilen uses, probably a SAAMI standard design.

I just built a bench gun on the Shilen Select Match blank with a 1-14 twist, mine I ordered with the 4 groove ratchet rifling. This was simply because I never tried one, and since this was only because I acquired a Panda action with 223 bolt face, in a old McMilan BR stock, I new the reputation of the 222 rem for accuracy.

I have never shot a fired case. My Smith just cut the chamber Monday, 3 days ago. We rented a .246" nk minimum spec reamer from Elk Ridge Reamer rentals. Like 1911nut I'm cut to .244" loaded necks.

First day out firing the unfired 222 Lapua cases, I spent 3 rounds sighting in with 23.0 grn H322 using Remington 7 1/2 primers. With 3 shell I had left from sighting in I shot the 3 shot group.

That was aiming at the square on the IBS emblem. So I made a final adjustment, and fired the other 5 rounds I brought with me. This was loaded with 22.5 grains of H322, and the Remington primer holding bottom of the mothball.20230321_185254.jpg

Needless to say, for unfired brass, just fireforming on my first trip out, I'm happy with the Shilen barrel, and have hopes for the ratchet rifling!

I took it out Wensday in the rain. With gusty switchy wind just to fire more of my brass to prep some for testing when the rain and wind stop next week. Loading from 22.3 to 23.4 grains, every 5 shot group stayed under .4". H322 and Randy Robinetts fine 52 grain Match bullet is all I have shot so far, 51 shots in.

They needed trimmed running .007" difference from long to short and now I have my bushing to start with .003" neck tension. I will be centering my loads around the 23.0 grain range as it is again in the rain staying under .250" with 5 shots in the unfired cases.

But I would not hesitate to suggest the Shilen barrels, I am also sure if I had built this for anything but paper, I would suggest the 1-12 twist for varmint hunting, to allow heavier bullets!

That's awesome... thanks for sharing. Appreciate all rhe details. I will take note of the rental place and reamer spec.

Never owned a 222 myself, thus the reason for the excitement to do one. My project will just go in an old 788. I hope to find a decent stock wide enough for bench work.

I never owned one before either, but after over 68 years I have never heard a single person give anything but praise for the accuracy once they owned one.

Fred Sinclair told me years ago of his praise for it. If I had not found a Pence barrel in 17 cal. with the owner insisting to sell the complete rifle in order to get the barrel, I'd probably still be depriving myself!

But when I found the stock was a graphite McMilan and the Panda action was a 223 bolt face, I decided to take the advice Fred Sinclar shared with me over 40 years ago,,, I only regret not having one before this, and i just aquiered a 1-14 twist Krieger,,,, can you guess what it will be? ;)

thanks. i am using N133 and Berger 52's. i am at 23 grs. it is also a Shilen 14 twist SM barrel on a Savage Target action. it shoots well but i think it can do better.

your COL measurement listed; is it base to tip or base to ogive? (or whatever point the Hornady gauge measures to.)

i will have to check, but it seems like i tried 22 grs of N133 but it was not successful compared to 23 grs

i am going to order some standard 52 Barts.
I am shooting 23.3 grains of N133 with a 52 Berger jammed .005". I have a 24" Brux 12 twist Rem Varmint contour. Velocity is right at 3200 fps. Chamber is .250" neck, zero free bore & 1deg 30 min leade. I have Nosler Premium and Lapua brass. I have some 52 grain BIB's and have ordered some Barts std 52 FB which will not be here until next fall. I have a 13 twist Krieger Heavy Varmint on order (6-8 weeks out).

My problem now is I need to find a new range as the benches at the local Ikes range are not capable of demonstrating the rifle's ability.

shot my Remington 700 BDL in .222 today. 52g Berger FB-T over H335. Rifle is as from the factory with the exception of an Urbanrifleman camo woodland stock.
