222 bullet ?

My 788 liked the 50g sx with RL7, when I ran out of those during one of the droughts a bunch of years ago, I tried the 50g TNT's with H322. Woodchucks didn't care for either. The 50g sx also shot well with H322. The Sierra 50g (#1330) were a little hard at .222 velocities, the other two are more explosive.

I just finished my 222 build 2 weeks ago. Savage short action, Shilen 26" 12 twist heavy palma barrel, Boyds stock with Whidden v block, Sightron s tac 5-20x50. Picked the right powder/bullet with IMR 4198 with 40gr Nosler BT. Sighted in with 5 factory Vmax 50gr rounds, the last 3 of them grouping at .2" at 100 yards. Here are the first 4 groups of my reloads shot round robin. Still haven't cleaned the barrel yet. Will clean the barrel and repeat from 19.4 to 20.6. Weighs 12lbs and has about the recoil of a 22mag in a 7lb gun. I have never had a setup with this much accuracy this early. I picked the 222 for low recoil and because smart guys that shoot a lot said it would shoot light out. Well, I am glad I listened, this is going to be a fun gun. Excited to see how it does at 500 yards.

Cool rifle you built. Nice start, hunt up some Barts bullets, they shoot very small in my Shilen

I have killed a ton of groundhogs with 50 Sierra Spitzer but for pure accuracy in every .22 cal centerfire I have owned it's Barts Custom 52gr HP. 40 gr Vmax as stated above
are very accurate also. I started my benchrest career with a .222 shooting 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. Your rifle will tell you what it likes

I've got a 40X 222 R, I shot 5 groups using the 40gr V-Max with 20.3gr. and up to 20.7gr. of IMR 4198, every group the holes where touching. That would mean 25 very dead critters, IF they where standing at exactly 100 yds. I'm using the lighter bullets trying to eliminate the "jump" on firing. I don't usually have a spotter's help.

One of the most attractive things about the 222 is that it shoots a variety of bullets well and is easy to tune. I use 50-53 grain bullets in almost all of my own 222s. I would pick two or three bullets you like, load them up and see what happens, chances are the rifle will do well. It shoots a lot of powders well too, IMR 4198, H4198, H322, H335, CFE 223, 8208, VV 133 - I’ve shot all of those and more with good results. Enjoy!

Answer to the question of most popular 222Rem bullet. lt is ''50GR''. Looking at 222 ammo listed on GunBroken or any ammo site, 50GR outnumbers all others combined. 50gr loadings listed seem to favor poly tipped, followed by soft points.

If you’re wanting a good 52g bullet to try, Barts Originals and Ultras are exceptional in my 222’s.

The 52g Originals shot so small from my Shilen barreled Savage the groups were hard to measure.. ….
I just ordered some 52 gr FB Barts Originals. She told me it would be six months before they made them again. Something about jacket supply problem.

Go with the 52 and 53 grain match bullets usually the best accuracy.
Back in the day for varmints 50 & 55 gr Hornady SX super explosive, had to duck the Varmint parts at close range. Then later the 40 gr Nosler BT at 3750 fps.
