Who Knows the 222 Remington?

When he built it new it might have cost him $2000. Depreciation on a rifle is real as it is in cars.
Interesting and disappointing. So I take it might not be worth hardly anything. All depreciated out. Not trying to be rude, merely pointing out that some things may depreciate in the short term but if a desirable item may in fact appreciate. Sounds like this gun may not be one of the desirable ones though. Which is why I was asking in the first place. I obviously know nothing about target or benchrest guns so certainly do appreciate you input. Thank you for that. I might be better off taking the gun apart and selling it piecemeal. In searching the gun sites at some of these components they bring pretty good money even though they evidently didnt cost much new a few years ago.

Not sure of the best place to post my question so forgive if wrong forum. Recently a friends father passed away. Left his mom in need of money. I was offered to buy his guns as I had ready money available. Good timing on my part. Only problem was I had to buy all even though I only wanted 3 of them. She needed money immediately. SO--- in the group there was a Winchester 1885 Shuetzen set up 38 55 cal. Amazing shape. Another is a 222 Rem. This thing weighs a TON. It looks like a McMillan stock, Rem 40x action, heavy Hart stainless barrel, Leupold 36x scope. I know nothing about this caliber or bench rest shooting or the components that make up this gun. Not sure at my age I want to get involved in another hobby either. lol. Question is, is this a good set up? Quality? Desireable? I tied up more money in the group of guns than I really wanted in order to get the 3 I wanted. What would the 222 be worth if Decide to sell? I can post pics.
A few years ago I got a pristine 1968 40XBR 222 on Gunbroker for $1300. It came with a Leupold 24x scope. It’s now wearing a Leupold 35X

Seems there’s renewed interest in 222 bench rifles, so Yours should sell fairly easy. I’d guess maybe $1500 to $2000 . That’s based on ”She doesnt remember him ever shooting a lot. “

I've not found there to be any depretiation in any top end firearm, quite the contrary! That gun 20 years ago no way cost 5k to build! That's the cost today for a new Bat on a custom Carbon fiber stock and Krieger Barrel with a B&A trigger.

I'm betting when that rifle was new it cost about $2000.00 to build. Fact is my first br build was on a XP-100, with a Hall stock, and a custom Merideth paint and bedding job. Over 30 years ago and that's about what I had in it.

Now add all the stuff to prep brass, dies to load, bullets brass primers powders and the type of bench rest equipment to shoot off of ,,,, ya you can more than double the cost of the rifle to start competing. But 5k will get you the best BR rifle built today, and that's more than double what that rifle would of cost. About the time folks quit sleeving Remingtons for increased bedding area.

Most guns I bought 30, even 20 years ago are over twice the price they cost back then. I remember when folks said a Ruger Black Hawk would never be worth more than 300 bucks, 3 of mine in less than 20 years are worth over 1500 bucks today. Freedom arms price one of them today, my first was a 454 at around 1k. You can double that for it today.

Good, high quality guns have always been a great investment, and that won't change as the price of New continues to sore, and top gunsmith continue climb with labor costs.

Just my personal experiance,,

Maybe I should clarify. Assuming $5000 outlay, it depreciated.

I was not trying to buy your gun. I was not trying to lowball you or be a smart azz. If you were to bother to look over my posts here, I think you would find that I am not like that, but hey, maybe I am wrong in my self assessment. I was giving you what (in my opinion) the gun is worth. If you can sell it for more, or if it has more value than I think it does, then you are blessed, I am wrong and neither of us are out a single thing.

Some guys here (maybe a different market?) differ in their assessment. I hope they are right and I am wrong, for your sake.

I will mention this. I am not a rich guy. When I buy a rifle it is usually used. Sometimes (most times) I pay too much. That said, a new rifle costs parts plus labor plus wait time, shipping etc and misc costs. When I buy it used, I hope the barrel is great, but frankly, unless I KNOW it is, I assume I will put a $750 barrel and chamber job on it. I seldom see a 20 year old gun recoup build cost, but again, I could be wrong.

I hope you take a liking to the rifle. Get you a good portable bench, a good rest and take it out and shoot some live varmints with it, or bust steel at distance. I think you will like it.

I do appreciate and value your advice and suggestions. Sometimes my wording doesnt come out the way it was intended. Please dont take offense. I certainly never in any way expected to get what the lady claimed he paid to have it built. She was very uncertain and confused about several other things. I was hoping to recoup some of my costs though and will attempt to do so to the best of my ability. I too am not wealthy and try to buy things at the lowest price I can. I fear I may have got a little carried away on this deal in pursuit of the guns I really wanted. I do dumb or foolish things sometimes. lol.
