Where to move?

I agree with K22. I would also suggest you check out central PA, maybe also eastern most WV. If you don't buy too big a piece of land and don't need too big a house you can get by living reasonably in PA. PA has a lot to offer. Parts of PA are some of the most beautiful parts of this great country that I have ever seen. Lots of fun history in PA. Just great fun to road trip, much like northern NY. Heat your house with coal you can pickup yourself at the coal mines. And you can even shoot 1000 yards at Williamsport. Yes, PA might even be in my future.

Another 10 years and all states will be as bad as NY and Cali if we don't take a stand. Is everybody that shoots going to move out of NY? Or any other state when they make more firearms restrictions. I am surprised shots haven't been fired already. Maybe they should just legalize pot to numb everybody's brain and calm them down when they tax and take away rights. I am just wondering what I am going to do when it happens here in MN.

I decided northern Arizona is where we're headed

Lakeview Oregon is an extremely gun friendly and Conservative small town located in the low humidity, thinly populated area of South central Oregon. The former mayor led the effort to put in a shooting range on town property. Present mayor is is also a gun club member and helps put on events at the range where membership costs $25 per year. Several of our local ministers are also club members. The chair of the county commissioners has an FFL, the chief of police was my co chair for our Friends of NRA fund raisers and the county sheriff usually heads up the kitchen staff for our local gun shows. The 16' tall signs representing a cowboy holding a six shooter over his head and welcoming people to Lakeview were found to violate state highway height regulations so they were moved to the fairgrounds. However the local Safeway still has a smaller version in their parking lot.
We have good deer hunting and lots of varmints in the form of ground squirrels and coyotes. There is no state sales tax. You can also purchase a home and ten acres or more (for your own back door shooting range -- which many of us have) for less than the price of a house alone in most places. The county often has the highest percentage of high school graduates going on to college of any county in the state.

I just traded Southern California (with three Long Range clubs within 100 miles of my house) heat, congestion and political BS for Oregon. Specifically coastal Oregon. No income or sales taxes. Property taxes reasonably low. Virtually no firearm restrictions other than Federal Mandate (no waiting period, everyone shoots, hunts and fishes). Very little snow (even this year). No more rain than any Northeast state. Rarely gets below freezing nor above 75 in the summer. Plenty of ranges if you don't mind a drive. Green all year and great Salmon runs. Nothing against the South, have spent plenty of time there through the years for months at a time at all times of the year. I can not take the humidity in summer nor the penetrating cold in the winter. But they do shoot there - a lot!

I'm pretty sure Oregon has state income taxes that are perhaps slightly worse than California. But no sales tax is nice, and you cannot pump your own gas, which is easy to get used to -- presuming the gas jockey doesn't scratch your car. >:(

I am incredibly grateful for the assistance, PM's and insight. Please keep it coming.

I grew up in PA, western...warm feelings for PA.

But am thinking that a bit warmer might be of necessity. I have a bunch of new titanium in my back and the cold weather makes it feel like I sat on a popsicle....yikes! :o

Ok, now for one minor additional question....bugs....???

I have to admit to not being a big fan of bugs (insects, biters, nasties, annoying results of the fall of man...ya, them). I have often joked that I would confess to anything if someone stuck a bag over my head with a bunch of blackflies in it...everyone has a limit. Mine is that I can't stand a bunch of bugs. Here in NY they freeze 8 months of the year!!! HAHHAHAHA

Those that have suggested TN, Texas, Oregon...chime in....and others too. This helps me narrow the search. BTW, I am really thankful for the kindness you all are showing. I got only one dis-invite so far!

Well, I was born & Raised in New Jersey and could not wait to get away from the entire east coast. Active duty military for 21 years, lived in fFlorida, and enjoyed it, lived in SanDiego, Ca . Back before the Nazi's took over the state, and loved it there. Great weather great fishing and so,so hunting! Retired moved to Las Vegas, hated it ok fishing if you only want to fis lake Meade, Drew 1 deer tag in 12 years never drew an elk tag and as an avid fly fisherman you had to travel from 125, to 350 miles to do that, and it's hotter than hades! Then I decide after my wife retired to take a job in Boise, Idaho, man I am here to tell you I belong to 2 shooting clubs and there are at least 3 more I could join, the one Closet to my house, the indor range is 15 minutes away, and the outdoor range is 15 minutes the opposite direction, I pay 100.00 a year and we get a key to the outdoor range to use anytime we want. Fly fishing is everywhere, as a matter of fact this state has as much pristine water as a person could ever want and there are rivers that are open to trout fishing year round. Let's talk religion, I have never lived in a community like this church are everywhere and the people are so nice that it has actually been mentioned on ESPN a couple of times!
Yup we get winter here but not as bad as the east coast gets hit on an average year 6-8" and some years a bit more, in the 9 years I have lved here we have only had 2 years when snow stayed on the ground for about 2 weeks, most times it snows a couple of inches and it's gone within 24 hours. The one thin I love about living here is the amount of sun we get each day, it gets light in summer just before 5am and it does't get dark until 10:30. Our range starts 22 steel matches at 7 pm and plenty of time to shoot after you get off work. This is a very conservative Red State, property tax on my 2600 soft home $2200.00! Price of new Homs is $85.00-$$96.00 soft. My house is on 1/3 rd acre, and purchased new in 2005 was 255k. By the way if you also like to golf, 18 holes with cart on most expensive course, $45.00?

I moved to Dallas for a few years in the early 80's and the first thing I noticed that there wasn't all the mosquitoes like I was used to. Not that I wanted any, lol

I don't know why, but the common house fly is very uncommon in the Phoenix, AZ area, mosquitos are practically non-existent. I'm sure the lack of mosquitoes is due to the low humidity.
Yes, there are scorpions. But they are primarily nocturnal and they hibernate in the winter months.
And by the way - you don't have to shovel sunshine. ;)

Riverwolf, (others too) that is the kind of info that I need to hear. Real costs for housing, how you like it, what teh community is like....how is the shooting etc.

I once told my bride I want to be able to shoot from the back porch in my boxers and not have social services visiting to take away my kids, guns, and powder and offering to "help" me with my addictions! ;D

and will the bugs carry away a small infant?? :o

You could move to Utah. The place is pretty much run by a church. Typical conservative values. Their perverts can't buy porn or "implements" there so they come to Colorado for their purchases.

Yep. Utah for you.

Don't come to Florida. Too many Yankees here now.

You can have that armpit of a state all to yourself Captain and yes, that's coming from a proud yankee!

Now back to business. My old boss lives in Tennessee and he said that is one of the best places he's ever lived, US army retired after 22 yrs. of bouncing all over the globe fwiw!

Thanks,
Mike

I thought P.A. was nice, driving from the Great American Outdoor Show through Harrisburg and Lancaster then home through Hershey..I got thinking of the ranges they have and all the good gunsmiths, better then NY for sure!

Yes, I think PA is the state to consider if someone is from the NE and does not want to bust a major move.

I have considered Boise myself. The only thing that has kept me from doing a scouting trip is the understand there is like zero employment opportunities there right now. At least that is what I have been hearing. Also water can be an issue.

But please keep the NW posts coming.

Hi Steve,
Not sure what your job requirements are , but our unemployment numbers are just below national average. There are large companies moving here and we are home to a number of firearms and shooting related companies, like Tactical Solutions, and Primary Weapon Systems, a portion of Blackhawk industries is here and the first 2 are in Boise. We have the easiest airport your ever going to get in and out of quickly. Some of the bigger companies here are Micron Industries(computer chips) huge co., Hewlett Packard huge employer, ATK manufacturer of aftermarket stocks, Plexus, two companies that manufacture enclosed trailers one is Interstate trailers, Construction for new homes has been going pretty well, and there are a lot of companies expanding to Boise. We have a balanced Budget amendment that requires our legislature to stay in session until they get that done. Carry concealed license are very easy to aquire and are recognized by 19 other states. The best part is hunting fishing and outdoor sports are probably the best in the country. as a resident if you purchase a sportsmans package its $124.50, heres what you get, hunting license, deer tag, elk tag bear tag, wolf tag, mountain lion tag, turkey tag, fishing license, steelhead permit, salmon permit. purchased accross the counter! For Elk, Deer, and bear if you want a higher quality area you submit your license number and if drawn you turn in your tag receipt for the tag in that area you were drawn for. if you just want to hunt the regular non entry zones thats up to you. 7000 mile of 4 wheeler trails and you don't have to pay anyone to use them! Best white water in the U.S. this place is a mecca for white water kayakers. If you decide to ever come out for a visit, send me a PM and I will give you my info and I can show you the area or I can give you ideas of were to checkout your areas of interest.
