Where to move?

Silver $$ Contributor
Being very specific here in this question:

I am retired LEO, 4 kids, wife, educated, family matters very much, church matters, conservative values matter, like good food, want to be able to shoot, hunt (varmints hopefully) and flyfish. Lots of experience in firearms, training, safety and teaching. Due to injury, am not able to deal with a LOT of cold weather, snow. Am now living Upstate NY and have reached my limit of the nanny state taking everything from me to feed some chap whose pants hang to his knees. ::) Time to move to a place that values education, and values delineated above.

So, please tell me why I should move to an area you like. Please don't tell me where you would LIKE to live...I am looking for honest responses from folks living "there" happily. This is an honest question, so please, spare the snide remarks about Yankees, or me shooting your PD's...I am a red-blooded American who has paid the price, and want to move to a place I can be more free. I want to be a good neighbor and contribute, not suck off the system. Just been so busy doing the right thing here I never got to travel, so I really do not know where to look.

I look forward to thoughtful answers. Besides, it gives a person a chance to crow about why their place is so great.

if you really only are willing to help out one yankee conservative, God loving guy and his family, and don't want everyone to know about your favorite place, send me a PM!

Thanks
Snert

I'd take a hard look at Oak Ridge Tennessee. They do more shooting in a month than most ranges do in a season.

Good luck with your search and congrats on making the move.

That's funny.

Yea, the area around East TN is pretty nice. We do have ORSA, and I'd say we shoot more in two months that most ranges do in a yr. (hey there are only 4 weekends for scheduling most months) Membership for one of the nicest shooting facilities in the US is $125/yr.

Housing costs are low, no state income tax... let me repeat that for someone from NY ... NO STATE INCOME TAX, very low property tax, we do have a 9.25% sales tax, you gotta pay something somewhere. I'm from the GA coast, and it took me a while for this area to grow on me. It has now. It offers a lot compared to most anyplace else unless you want to live in NYC or Boston, in which case, we don't have any of that here.

I'm a transplanted New Yorker living down in Houston. Been here since 1976, I could live anywhere I want but I love Texas and the gulf coast. For me the weather is ideal, we're located across the gulf from Orlando. Until I got into my mid-fifties the heaviest jacket I had was a windbreaker. In 38 years I've seen the "white rain" only four times and it only stuck to the ground overnight twice. Melts the next day.

If your church matters, this is a great place. Stafford (next town) made national news because they put a moratorium on new churches. Since they have no property taxes too many churches were moving to the area. Another thing to love about this area is that it's the fastest growing county in the US right now and Texas has no state income taxes.

I live in a suburb of Houston (Missouri City) and a NRA 1,000 yard range is 15 minutes away from my house, some guys drive two hours to get here. Membership is $140 year, I can literally shoot any and every day, but if it drizzles a bit I wimp out and wait an hour or so.

As we get older access to doctors is important and Houston has a Medical Center second to none and it's only a 35 minute ride to it. Another nice thing Houston has two large airports and getting places with a direct flight is easy.

Another thing you're going to love, for half of the money that you get from selling your house you'll be able to buy one that is twice as big here. The only downside, no basements and it's flat. Big sky is what I call it. Love to see the horizon and sunsets. Miss it when I'm away.

I volunteer at the food pantry one/two days a week and another guy there is retired NYC PD from Queens and he likes it here too. His daughter also lives here. The joke around here is that Yankees are like Hemorhoids, once they come down they never go back up.

Good luck in your search.

My choices are Arizona for the six winter months and Ohio for the six summer months. But both states have state income tax. So when I soon have to give up my state income tax free "South Dakota residency", I guess I will have to start paying a little more in taxes. (We recently sold our 'wheel estate' that we lived in full time, so we are no longer 'nomads'.)

I've lived in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. Worked in South Carolina (live 2 miles from state line) and traveled Texas extensively. I can recommend any of those states. Been in NC for the past 30 years and still go to Tenn and Texas on a regular basis.

Each state has its pro's and con's, you just have to weigh them and decide.

Good luck!!

sounds to me you are looking for Texas or New Mexico not too sure about the fly fishing though :D

There are plenty of flats along the Texas coast where you can catch redfish on a flyrod in knee deep water

I think Huntsville, AL might deserve consideration. The quality of life, socio-economics, gun-friendly culture, generally warm weather, not to mention the recent endorsement from Remington.

CANADA to the rescue,

there is a website or something called where to retire.com and they have a number of books and articles on where to retire and you could look there and for about 150 bucks can get all the real info, other than shooting clubs or areas,

your welcome : . )

I live. in Northern Nevada. We have 4 distinct seasons, but still enjoy over 300 days of Sun per year. We do get snow but it generally melts very quickly. Its comprised of high desert with lots of mountain ranges to split it all up. No problem to take short pickup ride out in the sage and set up a 1000 plus yard informal range....shoot for an afternoon..clean up and go home.

One of our local ranges ... http://palominogunclub.org

We have no state income tax and lots of nice small quiet small communities.

The biggest con is all of the California folks moving here to escape. Some just don't get it and want to get us to change to the place they just left.

Good luck on you search!

Rural Central west coast of Florida. South of Tampa and North of Naples. has it covered . The best fishing. Lots of Churches. Not many liberals if you stay away from the big city's. Good gun club that you can shoot 1000yd Thursday through Sunday. You wont get called a Yankee unless you act like one. If you make the right connection you may get to shoot all the hogs and coyotes you can see. Church is the best place to make that connection. Taxes are too bad housing is good Price. If you get acreage most don't mind you shooting. Larry

Except for the winters which you stated might be problem, Center Pennsylvania might deserve a look. Has many of the values you listed and they don't tax pension benefits.

Has some the best varmint hunting (groundhogs) you could ever want and most farmers will welcome you to shoot them. I start hunting them in April all the way to October. That's a lot of field time. :)

Probably not as radical change in climate from what your already use to.

Strong hunting / gun support in most of the State especially in rural areas except in the Philadelphia area.

Concealed carry permits are readily available if you have a clean criminal record. (except Philadelphia area)

Plenty of state game lands and state forests open to public hunting - varmints, predators, small game, turkey, deer and bear. Coyote hunting has seen a marked increased in the last few years.
