The most accurate cartridge.

So, rather than giving this threads subject as "the most accurate cartridge" I should have subjected it as "the most versatile cartridge" or perhaps "the perfect cartridge". The Remington .222 (triple deuce) has the unique characteristics of one holing rounds at 100 yards using points from 35 grainers to 60 grainers and everything in between. The cartridge doesn't care what powder you throw at it cause it likes them all. (I find it difficult to find the best load because they all give one hole groups). Loaded "Hot" or loaded "slow" makes no difference she'll put it in one hole at 100. Lets see....value? A pound of powder produces something north of 280 rounds. Accuracy? Did I tell you she shot the smallest five shot group ever registered in benchrest competition? Did I tell you the recoil from the .222 is so minute you get more recoil from a mosquito fart? Need speed? She'll push a 40 grainer to the point of burning barrels and give you 3000 fps pushing a 60 grainer. Yea she's a "one hole wonder" and a "wallet group groupie".......oh and did I tell you....she's my favorite cartridge?...........Longfeather

Probably what would have been more accurate would have been to ask..."In your opinion and experience....what is the most accurate cartridge for this discipline.....standard benchrest, 600 yard, 1000 yard, F/TR, F-Open, etc."!!

It's guy's like longfaether that keep a lot of knowledgeable shooters from contributing their knowledge to these forums. I don't mind offering my opinion and knowledge....but when the OP completely ignores FACTS.....it's a sure sign that their original intent was simply to agitate......aka a contrarian.

By no means...agitate. Just trying to lighten you up a bit. Life is short, ride it with some humor.

My apologies to everyone for getting so cranky , I should have just ignored the whole thing it wasn't worth my time nor any of yours, I did keep an eye out this weekend at our first competition of the year at deep creek in Missoula and I didn't see one single .222 there?????? what a bunch of idiots we all would have won if we would have been smart enough to bring a deuce 8) Huh!!! there I go again, I just can't let it go, .........Rant off! thanks Steve and GSPV for showing me the light ;)

Hey Longfeather,
Saw this and was thinking of you, thought maybe you could set a new world record and buy this brass and shoot it all into one hole, now that would be impressive 1000 rounds through the same hole, I have total confidence in you my friend I know you can do this and it is a good buy as well.

P.S best of luck to you although it's a triple deuce you won't need any luck just pull the trigger ;)

FJIM, nice, I have never shot group yet , but my question is this are you guys measuring from one end to the other then minus bullet size in you case .243, that would mean it was a .369 group, is that correct. I know normally the whole is never the size of the bullet so I assume that would be the only way to measure.

Hi, I have observed this over a few years at the local range. There is an old fellow shooting an old 40xb Rangemaster in 222 with an old Unertl scope. He says he has been shooting this rifle from about 1964.
I see lots of young guys shooting 6mmbr, and ppc, 243's .... handing over their hard earned cash to the old man. The range is only 100 yards long, so no long range shots. While the deuce may not be the most accurate cartridge, I would certainly be aware of old men shooting a old 40xb.

Im going to say no, groups are measured center to center with a measureing device. They do not measure outside then remove .243

You will find that most groups at a match measure much bigger then you think they are.
I think if you measure outside to outside and be generious, take .230 off that you will be close.

Not a good idea to cheat yourself.

I agree this thread is a joke. Here is one thing i have found and kind of have a theory on. why the 6ppc wins.
I have had several great shooting 14 twist 6BR's i have even stated my 6BR would outshoot my ppc most of the time. when you go to your honey hole and my 6BR would shoot .150 after .150 if i did my part. my ppc would shoot .350, .450,.190 ect. I have a 6BR with 1,800 round down the tube and there IS NOT a .222 rem on this planet that will out shoot it. But the 6ppc tunes in the wind, kind of freeky i feel. i can get a tune in a certain wind direction that nothing will shoot with it. example would be the wind & mirrage is switching R to L and my tune is to shoot the right mirrage not the wind. my 6ppc just shoot's say dots so easy its like childs play and nothing else will shoot better than .350 no matter what you do in these conditions. I have no explanation for it.

Another example would be you are at a match and the commence fire command was just given. all of a sudden there is a big let up. the flag tails are hanging straight down. there is no wind. first of all you get real nervuos knowing you have trigger pull conditions and think wow there is going to be some real small groups fired now, you can hear people running, you are trying not to double with the guy next to you. you shoot a high .200 thinking you just blew this match. after the match is over you find out that that high .200 wasent too bad at all there were some monster groups posted under them conditions. why? my guess is everyone was tuned for conditions. was everyone that nervous. was there no 222 on the line LOL......

My youngest son asked me what I thought the most accurate cartridge was. Having loaded and shot most everything from .17's to 300 Holland Holland's I had no hesitation answering "the triple duce" 222!

If this was 1970, you would mostly be correct. It is 2013 and the 6mm PPC has dominated group shooting for more than a few years. The .30 BR is the current choice for score.
