Subsonic round for 100 yard hunting?

Between the eyes works best

if you use one of the large bore pistol rounds you can still take the heart lung shot as the bullet wont pencil through and actually expand and blow a hole,,the 45 Long Colt or 500 S&W would work well also as would the 45-70 or 444 Marlin,,

More great replies.

Nomad47 maybe I missed it but round are you shooting through that suppressor?
6SLR and 6XC. 105 AMax bullets. Both run right at 3100 mv due to different powders.

I'm running a 10" home made suppressor made with freeze plugs.

I think I'd go with a easy switch barrel system like the Handy Rifle. Get one of the larger caliber barrels to thread, scope it, and "viola". Sub-sonic meat ax. jd

I've read that Hornady XTP in 90grn (.309) bullet will expand well in 300BLK. I've also read that if you modify the AR15 mag and they will feed just fine.

They do. Problem is, ultimate stealth comes with Trail Boss or Tin Star, neither which will cycle an AR. Single shot or bolt is the way to go with these.

As for lead bullets in the Blackout I use the Missouri bullets 245 gr .309 bullet with the hi tek coating. In my AR 300 blackout I use 11.3 gr AA1680 with a CCI 450 primer. Yesterday I shot a 4 shot group at 100 yards that was under 1". I was shooting the Sierra 240 MK with this same load but they just pencil through coyotes and have several that I couldn't recover due to no blood trail and long runs in cover. The wider meplat on these should provide more killing power. Hope to get a chance soon to research this.

Yotehunter, those are great groups at 100. I know just a bit about 300 BLK:), I know how hard it can be pushed supersonic ( far beyond published data) and it's performance with light and heavy subs. If you are shooting that at 100 then you have a winner load. Things tend to go all to hell with subs after that. Very hard to get low ES numbers with 1680 or any conventional powders. So many think 300 BLK/AR 15 but remember JD's whisper was a contender round. You truly learn to appreciate the subs capability with fast powders and a bolt/ single shot suppressed. Amazing how much energy is retained with a big, slow bullet. Graduated from wet pack to ballistic gel to test them. Fun stuff.

Rebel I found that the magnum primer cut down my ES numbers and annealing the brass can help to maintain a more consistent bullet tension. Some of my brass necks started cracking, a sure sign of overworked brass. Subsonic rounds will make you test your religion for sure. Now I'm not saying I can shoot sub MOA every time but the Missouri bullets with the HI TEK coating are the most reasonably priced heavyweights with great accuracy. I have shot sub 3" five shot groups at 204 yards with this 11.3 gr 1680 load and 240 SMK using a now discontinued Federal GM match magnum primer. What is your accuracy with the Lehigh and Makers?

I've been on 300 Blk talk for years. A bunch of us decided to have a 200 yard sub challenge. Target was an index card.
I really sucked at this with the combos I used, but so did a bunch of knowledgeable guys. A couple really shot some nice groups at that distance, but it had us all playing with powders we haven't thought of.
My best with 1680 and a 194 Lehigh was a 5 shot 1.5 vertical string at 100 yards. ( I only use magnum primers unless its in the handi rifle which does not pop them reliably ). I haven't revisited this project to see what unconventional, faster powders will do. I have a buddy in Montana that is getting stellar results at 100 with N120. After hunting season I'll try and wring out some load info and report back.
