Solus - Another New Action

Good grief.
Indeed. What a milquetoast review. Might this, could that, maybe this, pretty much that. 16 minutes of equivocating. Sorry for any of you who watched the whole thing. Follow the Mr. Skin video watching philosophy, and fast forward to the good parts. In this case, fast forward to the end and then go to the 'Laugh of the Day' thread. Way better use of your time.

I wandered into the LGS today and they had some of these in stock. Got to play with one. For the money it is very hard to beat. I've also got a BAT VR. Another Remington 700 clone. This is like a cross between a BAT VR and a BAT 3L. Not the finish level of a BAT but very tight tolerances and not bad. That video reflects my opinion having just brought this thing home. Yes, I bought one. $800 retail. Not sure what I'll build with it yet. Will probably get the mag bolt head when it becomes available. I'll be doing my own barrels rather than buying prefits but I think a lot of people will be opting for the prefit.

Apparently Proof is coming out with a preft specifically for the Solus, I guess using Proof Origin prefits isn't working out too well.

An update on that Solus action. So I finally built something with it. A bit of a frankin gun. I decided that since I was setup for 6 BRA for midrange F Class and I had a couple of takeoff barrels that I could cut down and rechamber that I'd build a utility or varmint 6 BRA. Found a Bergara B14 takeoff stock here on Accurate shooter for cheap. They are Remington 700 compatible as is the Solus. Needed the slightest bit of milling for a perfect fit but it does fit nice. Ordered an AICS mag for 6 BR variants. Got an action wrench and a TriggerTech Diamond trigger from Aero. Now to the barrel, I tapered a 1.25 straight takeoff barrel I had to an MTU contour but the stock channel was not big enough and I didn't want to start milling on the stock. I ended up ordering a Criterion 6 BRA Savage small shank barrel from Northland Shooters in an MTU contour. That barrel starts at 1.055 and 20 TPI rather than the 1.25 my barrel started at. Screwed it all together headspacing on my fired brass from the comp gun (Haverkamp action, Kreiger 30 inch 1.25 straight with a jewel trigger) and a go gauge from Northland. They turned out to be the same and the no go (with a piece of tape on the go gauge) worked as it should (meaning it would not close). Screwed an Anschutz rail section to the forestock so I could mount an F Class bipod or an F Open style bag rider that I'd built in the past and topped it with a 10-50x60 Sightron. Finished product:

Headed to the range with the gun and some leftover 6BRA rounds from last season. Wanted to save enough of those rounds for at least one match so I only had 9 I could burn in initial testing. Without load development for this gun and using the rounds developed for the other gun, the results were:

First shot on paper was a little over 3 MOA low and almost 1 MOA left. Adjusted and shot three shots with the same hold point. Only 100 yards but it was a bit windy. Shot 5 low and right. No adjustment for shot 6. Adjust up a click (1/4 MOA) for shot 7 and adjust up again for shots 8 and 9. Considering no load dev, I think this thing has potential. I'm thinking about shooting these rounds through this gun for fun in the next F Class match then maybe do a little load dev for it after the match.

As far as fit and function, the action is good quality and feeds flawlessly. Machining tolerances seem very good. No discernible machine marks. The firing pin clearance is minimal, no bushing required. Timing with the TriggerTech seems spot on. Seat of the pants locktime is fast. It is not as smooth or as tight as a BAT or a Borden but at half the price I'll take all the ones people want to turn their noses up at.

I should add that I'm a fan of the the 3 lug reduced bolt lift actions like the BAT 3L and 3LL. The Solus reminds me of those.

In my opinion, the Solus does have a soul. It's a good solid action.

I had read how rough they were on here and on other forums, so I wasn't expecting much when I saw and handled one at the NRA show last weekend. Granted, they might have selected the best of the best to put out there at their booth for people to mess with, but no joke, it was the slickest, most refined feeling action I messed with at the show. Am I ready to trade in my Origin for one? Not yet...but it sure seemed like a good setup for $800-850. Hopefully the initial bugs have been worked out.

Why would you make what is essentially a lateral trade?
I wouldn't! I'm just making the point that the Solus seemed nice, but it's still somewhat unproven vs. the Origin.

I've got my Origin in an Eliseo chassis from the man himself, @gme. I picked the Origin over other custom actions that have integral lugs and rails because they wouldn't fit in the tube gun chassis. Gary provides a recoil disk instead of a lug.

@NateHaler, the Coup De Grace seems like an awesome setup if you aren't looking for a non-integral lug/railed action like I was. I hope they sell a boat load of them, and I think they will at the price point they're selling them at.

Lateral except that the Solus integrates the recoil lug and the scope rail into the action body, right? So in that sense, it would equate to a higher tier product, without the higher tier cost, e.g. Impact.

Maybe. I would note that a Borden Mountaineer doesn't necessarily have those features either, but that doesn't make it a lesser action than a Solus. I'm just hesitant to get in to the action swapping game, unless that's your goal.

I'm waiting for the American Rifle Company 'Coup de Grace', not that anybody cares...

I ordered one at their release as well.

Yeah, it is not a rough action. If you cycled it side by side with a BAT, you would say the BAT is smoother. I also have a BAT VR and I did this so I know. They are essentially the same, integral rail and lug, Remington 700 footprint, my BAT is melonited just as is the Solus, both have good machining tolerances with the edge to BAT, both have tight firing pins and quick lock times, the Solus is three lug like the BAT 3L where the BAT VR is twin lug like a Remington. Hard to compete with BAT or Borden in the context of refinement but in the context of price the Solus is hard to compete with. The BAT factory is 15 miles east of me, Aero Precision is on the other side of the mountains to the west. Both within easy reach should I have problems and need service.

If I were to compare the Solus to other bolt actions, I would say that it is smoother and more refined than a Ruger (especially the rpr I had) and on par with a Tikka, Sako, current Winchester 70 or Browning. But the 700 footprint gives it the edge when it comes to building something.

I have 2 Arc Nucleus actions and 1 Zermatt Origin. I like all 3. I admit that the Solus has my attention.
Is it truly functioning 100% during fast and furious use? I am going to try to find some videos to watch. I'm not in the field as much as I used to be to see all actions performing.

So another update. I shot that Solus build in an F Class match today. The first string I shot with my match 6 BRA and it went terribly sideways. Probably one of the worst scores I've ever shot. It was game over for me at the first trigger pull. I had nothing to loose. I pulled out the Solus for the second and third string. 600 yards in subtle but challenging conditions. Took me 4 shots to get in the 10 ring. 2 sighters and first two shots for record. That was bad since I can usually get there in one if I'm not already there. I chalk it up to conditions. After that I dropped 4 more points. In those conditions, I was happy with the rest.

Third string the conditions were even worse. I was holding in the 8 ring left and high at one point to get in the 10 ring and it was dropping in the low right of it but conditions were constantly changing. I dropped 10 points. That was not good at all but I don't think it was the gun. I think the gun will shoot. I need to verify it in better conditions. I and others who shot today have cleaned those targets at that range many times over the years. Today was not that day for anyone. Only had 1 clean today and that was done by a guy who placed second at nationals last year.
