Solus - Another New Action

As long as the trough in the middle is tall enough at the base, and not too wide, so the recoil lug on a ring engages, why is a full one needed?
Not too far back here someone was showing a thermal mount that was just catching the corners of one of those type rails. The rifles recoil was enough to shave the aluminum off those base corners and the mounts slipped over them, a oddity I’m sure but doesn’t look like a well built rail to me.

I'm inclined to think that was just a junk mount.

In many circles, maybe more tactical and field shooters than F class and BR guys, the Badger Picatinny rail was a good baseline for a 700 rail. I know I used them for a long time without issue. It has a full trough down the center.

Okay you got me to go look for a better pic than what was on the video. It doesn’t look like some of the cheaper hollow centered rails that are on the market, but gave that impression with the slight center cutout. I was wrong.

Well, I had to drive into town to meet the FedEx van, as the 10" of snow we had a week or so ago had the driver a little concerned over getting stuck. But in the end, I think it was worth the short trip - the actions appear to be pretty solid, and nicely machined. Bolts slide back & forth easily, though bolt lift seems a little stiff - but that will be mitigated a bunch when I've got the action in a stock, which will give more leverage. I like that they designed it so that the bolt handle lies fairly flat against a stock in the closed position, so won't ever come close to interfering with a scope when opened - even one with a large ocular bell & power ring.
I do wish they'd have included a dimensioned tenon drawing, and wish that they'd have been able to develop & manufacture a rear-entry action wrench before they released the actions for sale - I have no idea how far out they are on that detail. I have a Bartlein bbl blank in stock that I intend to use on one of these actions, and could've been out in the shop today getting it fitted & chambered but for those two details...

ARC mausingfield. Controlled feed smoother than push feed

My Mausingfield is exceptionally smooth - wouldn't trade it for anything. Runs like a sewing machine and handles adverse conditions very, very well.

For those that want a push feed, the LP Fuzion is a great action. Built my wife a rifle off that action, and its excellent. Feel is more "robust" than a Mausingfield - I think that's due to the mass of the bolt. What I like about the LP's is the bolt's almost want to close themselves. They also handle adverse conditions exceptionally well.

Both may require slight modifications to the extractors to run the BR based cartridges well. Something that's fairly common knowledge with CRF based actions - tuning the extractor for your specific use/cartridge to optimize the CRF function. However push feeds can benefit from extractor tuning for the BR based cartridges for proper ejection - my wife's LP could use it, it doesn't eject live ammo very well, though its a simple fix.

I think people would have taken the increase on the more expensive action like the deviant pretty well. The bump in the tenacity seems to be the one everyone is fired up over. They probably should have just dropped it all together, I dont know.

I think where Defiance is going to hurt is sales for the PRS/"practical"/general target and hunting crowds.

The BR/F-class crowd seems used to paying higher prices for quality (Borden, BAT, etc.). However in the other markets, you are competing against Impact, Lone Peak, ARC, Zermatt, etc., which are all well received and lower priced (with the new Defiance price increases).

I'm not sure what disciplines make up what % of Defiance's sales. Sounds like it would be to their advantage to start focusing on BR and F-class, especially if gunsmiths like yourself are fond of the quality of the actions. I know in other disciplines Defiance was loosing market share to companies like Impact. This latest price increase will certainly see that market share continue to diminish, at least in disciplines like PRS.

Will be interesting to see what happens to Defiance. I love the Defiance I have on my .300NM rifle, it's undoubtedly a quality action.

Defiance is going down and out. They dont have a BR market and they raised the prices on the actions they sell the most of which are the ones in the most competitive market. They shoulda lowered the price not raised it. Then bring out a more premium one like ARC does.

The money is not in Br. They dont even really offer a true Br action. Theres some drop ports out there and the single shots have a small presence in F class. Their main market if i had to guess would hunting first and prs second. I highly doubt they will go after the br or f class market. I wont make any guesses on thier future. I know nothing of bussiness. But I sure hope they stick around.

Some folks on Snipers Hide are reporting that some Origin barrels aren't headspacing properly on their actions.
Have they gotten in touch with Zermatt? What seem to be the issue? I will eventually cruise over there and take a look see.
