Shooting Sports Proper References and Grammar

I've met a lot of different folks, of different types, in different places; some of em much more different than most.

The ones who (or is it whom) I've enjoyed the least, are the ones who think they are more intelligent than the rest. I've learned that we are all dummies, just in different ways, and some of the wisest guys and gals I've known, sounded the least like it.

I can appreciate proper spelling and grammar, and sometimes I even use it. I don't however think that it is the primary indicator of intelligence in humans.

I actually love quaint and tricky little twists in grammar and sentences, and like using them when I get a chance. I prolly sound like some kind of idiot, but -- Oh well.

What I hate, is over use of acronyms. "I saw our FOB down at the PFR, going over the MBFs of the new QTR." (usually typed or talked by some pretentious boob).

In the above post, I hope I haven't offended any different folks, dummies, guys, gals, idiots, English teachers, or pretentious boobs; or acronymists. jd

I think grammar and terminology is important, especially when communicating about firearm related information.

That's why caliber and cartridge should be used correctly.
Seriously, we're on a reloading forum.

Also, 'yeah' means yes. 'Ya' is Canadian for yes. Lol.

I hate it when someone tells me they're shooting a 6.5. 6.5 WHAT?????
When they tell me a 6.5 Creedmoor I really want to scream.

Nailed it!

We are on a "precision shooting/handloading forum" & people still use caliber (which is bore size), when they should be using the designated cartridge or the chambering.

A .243 Win is NOT a caliber. It is a cartridge or a chambering. A .243 Win is a 6mm or 24 caliber.

A 6BR Norma is NOT a caliber. A 6BR Norma is a cartridge or chambering. A 6BR Norma is a 6mm or 24 caliber.

The .243 Win & 6 BR Norma are BOTH 6mm's or 24 calibers.

A .30-06 is NOT a caliber. It is a cartridge or chambering. A .30-06 is a 30 caliber.

A 300 WSM is NOT a caliber. It is a cartridge or a chambering. A 300 WSM is a 30 caliber.

The .30-06 & 300 WSM are BOTH 30 calibers!

Back in the day, I hung out with a fellow car guy that couldn’t say “quarter panel” without it coming out quarter pounder. I have a shooting buddy now that calls rifle lands the lathes. You can say, did you mean lands, and he will answer, yea lathes….lol. Both guys were fairly intelligent otherwise.

Changing the rules will have no effect on that match, and will not affect the final score. However, when the new target sizes go into effect, they will surely affect who receives the awards.

I have spent the last 62 years of my 77-year life learning English properly, and I still learn something new every single day; whether meaning of words, or grammar.

When a rifle wears something- it wears a nightforce comp or it wears an ag composites stock.

Hah this trumps any grammar for sure. Infact this lingo should be banned on AC, this isn't ar-15.com. I roll my eyes when people describe their rifles LIKE THEIR KEN DOLLS. Jeez, rifles dont 'wear' things and they sure as shite dont get 'dressed'. Where and how the hell did this bs start up?!! Probably by the same crowd whose first firearms were on video games where they learned to refer to magazines AS CLIPS. Ok I feel better...no not really!
ps: cartridge please not caliber

My grammar was duly noted as I sat in my seat on a plane, when I asked a very nattily dressed woman sitting next to me, "Where' ya all from"? Her reply was "Certainly not a place where one ends a sentence with a preposition". So I rephrased the question. "Where you all from, bitch"?

Back on task, I never knew there were so many people that owned "automatic" weapons.

wrap my head around
you can thank me later
chassis (referring to a gun)
platform (referring to a gun)
price point
just sayin'
back in the day

'just feeling the waters' is just plain bad grammar which I learned to ignore a long time ago on classifieds.
