Back in the day, I hung out with a fellow car guy that couldn’t say “quarter panel” without it coming out quarter pounder. I have a shooting buddy now that calls rifle lands the lathes. You can say, did you mean lands, and he will answer, yea lathes….lol. Both guys were fairly intelligent otherwise.

Along those lines, how about a duplex reticule?

I’d like to see someone throw a horse over a fence. Even a small pony thrown over a really low fence would be something to see. Although, I don’t believe the horse or the pony would like that.

i was 'fixin' to say "blame the schools". however, i realized the schools are administered by adults, presumably educated, and typically admired, individuals of the community.

two quick stories:

when my younger son was in 4th grade i called out his teacher on some colloquiums and grammatical errors being perpetuated in class. she was, as the saying goes, 'not from around here' (east tn). her response was that correcting errors introduced at home would cause tension and put her in the awkward position of appearing 'uppity'. fearing for her standing in the community, she let the poor grammar slide ...

fast forward a generation to my granddaughter, now a first grader. she was describing an event and stated "me and my brother". i asked if she could say "my brother and I". she absolutely refused for about 5 attempts, then finally and painfully blurted out "my brother and I' as if her mouth was 'fixin to be' washed out with ivory soap.

epilogue:

my eldest son is a PhD physicist, can converse in 4 or 5 languages, has learned to write in Kanji, but can not spell in english worth a crap. go figure.

On another firearms related forum the subject of the abbreviation of Cartridge Overall Length, aka COL. Some were insisting on the abbreviation Cartridge Over All Length, aka, COAL, which to me is a bag of Kingsford.
Overall is used to describe from one end of something too its other end. A description of measurement. In this context.
Over All is used to describe a person’s character, to qualify something.
The use of COL is pretty much universal here in the U.S., but COAL mite be a European term as the load data book I have that uses COAL is from Vhitavuori.

So the correct term is Cartridge Overall Length. What gets me is how some people want to argue COL vs COAL until well past when the cows came home.

It's an historic cycle. The same thing was said back before Prohibition, i.e. the moral decay of the country. I'd say now we're in V4.0.

A guy at work always says "I took a fine bead" with his shooting stories.

It is easy to see that the English language has changed and morphed through time into what it is today. I especially see this through my Biblical studies. It aggravates me when I see 1611 KJV only church when that actually don't use a 1611 (nothing wrong with it btw just saying). I'm leaving that alone. Who gets to decide what the language grows into? Whom decides what is and is not proper or correct? Why do I have to be told how to communicate? There must be a standard so if I travel to any English speaking area one can understand me I guess. Who knows how our language will progress in the future. That being said, I'm pretty hillbilly. I still say y'all, all y'all (plural of y'all), youns, clamed (climbed), poke, dope, ifen, most "ing" words have the "g" silent, "oi" is pronounced incorrect as in oil and others I cain't thank of off the top uh my head. It's my dialect and proud of my heritage.

I met some guys from Wisconsin at a run down motel in South Dakota on a prairie dog hunt. I thought they talked a little funny, but they were a hoot! @rayporter do you remember the guy with the cheese curds? He walked around with that bag all night and every time I turned around he was holding it out trying to get someone to eat more. I don’t think I pooped for week. The other guy has a bunch of pretty cool prairie dog shooting videos on YouTube.

As others have said, I'm ok with however the other person communicates as long as they have something to add and don't do it in an arrogant way.
When the punctuation isn't right, I do have some WTF moments trying to figure it out.
I am really put off when someone asks a question but argues and doesn't end arguing about how the responses can be relevant. Not just questioning to understand how the responses would answer the question, but, apparently, just not wanting to accept the problem might be something they did.
We see very little of it here, but I avoid people who post in a bullying way.

For me, it's important to remember that people just beginning to work with firearms can often say something that is just ignorant or dangerous. As long as they are willing to listen, I'm fine with that - how else do they learn?
The first time I was in a gun shop, I asked to confirm that a 223 rifle was centerfire vs rimfire. I saw the 'o dear god' look in the person's eyes, but he simply answered my question.
