I got whetted my interest in competitive shooting back in the days when Savage was selling a BVSS-S for $500 and that was a week's salary for me. In those days, Savages were second-class citizens and ridiculed by the "in" shooters. Fred was the first guy I ever heard of who specialized in improving the Savage action and trigger and earned the reputation as THE Savage guru. A reputation he well earned. The huge sales of Savage rifles and their performance in club shoots and egg shoots around the country carved out a niche for them and the demand for Fred's services ran amok.
I have never understood why Fred and Lisa do (or don't do) some of the things they do and the frustration level of trying to deal with them is off the scale. I think they do have a "favorites" list and why not? Every 'smith I know of has a list like that and if I was a 'smith I would too.
There are some other guys out there now, like Kevin Rayhill and Nat Lambeth, doing Savage work. But in our minds they do not have the aura of THE Savage guru. How many would not prefer a gun built by Jim Borden or Dwight Scott or Sid Goodling, etc., compared to lots of other 'smiths who all do good work?
Though there are lots of shops now that will do work on Savages, they don't have the "Fred touch". I wish they would hire somebody, and I don't think the world is devoid of someone qualified to work in his shop, and someone to be a receptionist and handle "communications" would be nice. They apparently don't care what we think and if all of us give up and walk off in a huff they apparently still have more work than they can keep up with.
