Sharp Shooter Supply & Fred Moreo

I was wondering if anybody had current info on Sharp Shooter Supply in Delphos, Ohio. Are they getting work out on time now? I ordered a stock back in September '13 (it's now almost March '14) and was just notified I can send the barreled action for a T&T job. Everyone says their work is excellent but it takes forever to be delivered. Will it take 10 months to get my rifle back? Any info I'd appreciate it.

It took me 8 months to get a T&T action and 10 months to get a stock. I paid for these items in advance, if I ever buy from them again it will be a cold day in hill.

Ranchman, did you try searching for info on SSS? In my opinion, you would be crazy to rely on them for whatever work you need. OTOH, if you don't care if you ever get it done, then go for it. Maybe they'll surprise you, in a good way.

Would I bet on that? Heck no. They deserve the 'F' rating they get from the Better Business Bureau: http://www.bbb.org/lima/business-reviews/gun-sights-scopes-and-mounts/sharp-shooters-supply-in-delphos-oh-11000578

Appreciate the replies. I gave them a deposit for the stock and am about to send the rifle for a T&T. I was hoping they had cleared up any backlogs or problems they had. I need the rifle back by the first week of May, but it looks as if they still have delivery issues. I had heard Fred's work was excellent, I didn't hear they had these kinds of issues and complaints.

Thanks again for the replies.

Have kevin rayhill do the time and true if you think it is necessary. He is stockadestocks on the net.

in regards to Rayhill and Stockade, I was told if I wanted to pay extra I'd get put in front of other work so...it could be just as bad as SSS

The above is correct. I don't agree with the expedite fee, but that's me. Computers are the same way, you pay the 75$ expedite fee, everyone else's computer gets pushed to the side. I feel bad, but I need my computer to survive.

Both are good stocks. There are some companies that have a 18 month waiting list if you want their stocks.

SSS has left a trail of poo across the internet a mile wide and a mile deep, all you have to do is look. Anybody who does business with them should not be surprised.

Caveat Emptor.

They only do T&T at certain times of the year. Once the machine is setup for it they do all the action they have. If they called you and told you to send the action, it won't be there long. Mine took about 3 weeks. If you send it in one day after they are done doing T&T actions, it may take 6 months before actions are done again.

I have never met Fred (or Lisa) Moreo and have no axes to grind. When I decided to have a full custom benchrest rifle built, using one of the country's highest-rated gunsmith's and top-of-the-game equipment at all points, I was told the process would probably take two years. It did. I believe some of the top shooters, who make your products and your work look good, get better treatment and so what.

Just for the record, the "big name" gunsmith lied to me, cheated me, delayed me by telling me pieces were back-ordered, etc. Finally, I called the manufacturer and was told that gunsmith had "nothing on order" with them. I still hear him referred to as just a shade or two under God on this forum, but to me he's crap and always will be.

Thankfully, one of the "real" top 'smiths stepped up, was sick to see how I had been treated, and built one of the best firearms in the world for me.

From conversations with people who I trust, I think Fred and Lisa have had personal and health problems and, if you don't already know it, sometimes life gets in the way. It's still a "one-man" shop and set-up time and changeovers can eat up a lot of your day. I think it's time we all understand that Fred is one of if not "the" best Savage mechanic in the world. His schedule is what it is. If you don't want to wait, don't use him. Either way, I think it's time everyone stopped venting about Sharp Shooters Supply and making derogatory comments about Fred. As other posts have said, the situation at SSS is well documented, and probably not going to change much until Fred just gets sick of it and quits.

Every gunsmith I'm aware of who is involved in custom hunting and competition guns is snowed under and backed up. It's because of the popularity and increasing technology available to us. Most of the top 'smiths are not comfortable "farming out" some of their work or hiring assistants that usually end up leaving and competing against you.

Your question was, "will it take 10 months to get your gun back". The answer is yes. My action and stock took about 11 months. A lot of broken promises. That being said, the work is good.

If I was fred,I would buy another lathe and have it set up for a time and true so they could get done in a timely manner.Nobody complains about the work, just the fairy tales that they make up about why they are behind. With the work he gets and turns out I would bet he could afford another lathe and mill to get his work back on track. If his shop is too small he needs to move somewhere he can do his work in a timely fashion. As far as Kevin charging extra for stepping up your job is basically overtime pay to work his butt off to get everyone what they want.He is a standup guy,I know him to be truthful and honest with me. I would like to try an action done by fred but I dont have the lengthy time to wait at my age.

Yes, I switched to Kevin after my SSS experience. Very good communication. I just spoke to him yesterday and my second action should be done next week.

Can't any top gunsmith do the same quality work as SSS? It has my experience they can, maybe better. I use Mark Penrod and he does excellent work with great communication.

I own many Savage PTA actions. One of them was a build from Fred in 6 BR that i bought off a member here. It will make you ppc guys cringe!! I also own a few stock guns that also shoot just as good. If i match my SSS 6br against my 6br stock LRPV it would be a toss up so im not sure all the T&T hoopala has much meaning on paper.

Yup.......and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Savage shooters for not campaigning them at IBS/ NBRSA sanctioned short-range matches, group or score, as the humility of loosing to one of "THEM" may be more than us old geezers can bear. ::)....Why, it could be the death knell to the Custom action market.
At least Fred campaigned one at the Super-Shoot and did well with it ....ONCE. Proof positive that "hummer" bbls. DO exist. ;D

I can deal with th wait, but not the constant lies. I was on the "list". They said 6 months and I was #X, say 35 for argument sake. In 6 months I called, and I was # 45. I called in a couple more months and I was #65. The numbers are not the exact numbers, but you get the idea. Kevin will get it right in and right out. I think my LRPV will go to our own Rustystud, for a try. To say Fred is the best would be a real stretch. There are plenty of smiths that can work a Savage over. The ONLY advantage to Fred is the trigger, and I have seen a couple of guys modify a Jewell to work in a Savage. Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice, shame on me.
