I think IF any 6/6.5 mm bullets are better for critters, it's because they make a ton more offerings for those other two vs the .257. I'd say with the .25 being dead center between the .243 and .264, it's every bit as good a round as either of the other two for most game animals. More bullets are showing up for the .257 finally.

Well, i finally got an action.
Savage. Right bolt, right port.
Barrel ordered from Northland Shooting Supply, (sorry Stan!) Shilen, 26" S7 contour.
Chambered in 250 Savage.
When barrel shows up, i have someone local (member on here) building a benchrest stock.
Should look good, and be something different. (Aka not a 6BR).

Even out of my sporter barrel Stevens 200, it's shooting the 75gr Sierra Varmint bullet off a bipod that would keep up with the benchrest guns at my local matches.
Or at least not embarrass myself too badly.

Benches concrete, not wood. And they wouldn't let me use the spiked feet on the bipod. Couldn't load it like i'm used to.
Didn't help a screw fell out of the bipod.

and hard hats, bump caps, safety shoes, face shields, cut gloves, etc...
But I haven’t had to wear the cone of shame like certain other members of the family!
I think the 8 twist will stabilize all the heaviest .257 bullets out there today. I remember going with an 8 twist .264 barrel 20 years ago. I replaced it twice with other 8 twist barrels and kinda wish I'd have done a 7.5. The 150-156 bullets justify that today. Next one will be a 7.5. Couldn't hurt to go 7.5 for just that reason. Since you stated hunting use, you could get several years out of a hunting barrel. Considering a 140-145 grain bullet could show up for the .257, I think I'd speed it up to a 7.5 twist. Can't hurt for sure. Then your covering potential heavier/longer bullet options. The 25-06 is a big enough cartridge that it can handle heavier bullets for sure.
Maybe. Can't a guy daydream ? After all, the 131 BJ and the 2 Berger's all in roughly a 3 year period. IF Hornady or Sierra jumped on the heavy .257 bullet wagon, who knows what might show up. Time will tell. Either way, a 7.5 Twist isn't a bad thing. I think to get around equal in weight for caliber, a 140-145 would equate to a 6.5 bullet in the 150-156 grain range.
The 1:8 will stabilize the Blackjack/Berger 130-135 class bullets just fine at high velocities. The other consideration is the ability to use lighter bullets. The 1:7.5 may cause the lighter bullets to shed jackets at 3300+ FPS.
Good point. I'll find that out soon. I went with a 7.5. My guess is I'll be fine with 115-135s. Not sure about the ELDX 110s. Hornady is common for jacket failure I hear. Never had any issue personally but they exist. Even with a 7.5 twist running 110s at 3400 fps, RPM is 326K. I'm shooting a 22-250AI 8 twist running 53 Vmax at nearly 4k. No issues. Fingers crossed.
