Lathe tool holder and insert ?

Like these?

FomaSP Carbide Inserts for Aluminum DCGT32.51 / DCGT11T304 for Turning Cutting Tools 10 PCS https://a.co/d/eZkkbOv

Yes. I generally look for Korloy or Mitsubishi in the polished types... Not sure it matters but that's what has worked for me. Maybe 10-12 bucks for a box of 10.

For non-polished stuff I really like Kennametal KC5010 grade. Works well at ~400 RPM on 1-2 inch diameter stock, which is comfortable for a new guy like me

I've also found that the chip breaker in the ground and polished aluminum inserts doesn't work on SS so you end up with a bird's nest.
The chip breaker does make a difference as you say, and also the speeds and feeds. I personally am not in the habit of trying to use the wrong ones either.

I've posted this elsewhere before but not much has changed. In addition to the following I do have some Seco for rough turning and some Korloy polished inserts designed for alu but used for most anything. I also have some hand ground HSS for some things but the below are my main carbide tooling I use most often:

Circle Industries QCBI-375-6-5R Carbide Boring Bar w/TPCH-2205-CG5 Inserts.

Circle Industries FCBI-250-4-5R Carbide Boring Bar w/TDAB-505-CG5 Inserts. Pre-boring chambers.

Kennametal E08SDUPR2 Carbide Boring Bar w/DPGT2151HP KC5010 Inserts. Sharp high positive insert.

Kennametal SDJCRF082D Turning Holder w/DCGT2151HP KC5010 Inserts. Sharp high positive insert.

Iscar SWAPR-1414-06 Turning Holder w/WPEX060402R08 IC908 Inserts. Honed, sharp.

Iscar SER0625H16 Threading Holder. IC908 grade inserts. I mostly use full profile inserts.

Iscar SIR0375K11 Internal Threading Holder. IC908 grade inserts.

Micro 100 BB-1801500 Boring Bar for small chambers like PPC

Carbide Depot has been the best price I’ve found recently for the Iscar inserts. Cheaper than MSC for sure.

That's the style / shape I use a lot of. I like them for turning tenons.... Makes a relief/chicken groove really easy. I really just look for a "name brand" polished insert that's the right size. They all work well.

The more you know, the less you realize you don't no. I like carbide inserts on everything because of no lube. The only time I use lube is on the Final Cut with chamber reamer. Easier to keep work area clean. Carbide always make a great cut and don't need to be sharpen, just replaced as needed, and they can last a long time, or just one little mistake and they chip or crack. HSS is good and much more forgiving, but needs sharpening and higher maintenance .

Note- I just do my own stuff because I like too.

That's not to say I don't use them on SS. They're just not my go-to for general material removal.

I keep one in a LH tool bit also. The razor sharp back side works well for chamfering threads and tenons with out rolling a burr.

Same here. I got the right hand tool.. used it once and said "I have to have the left hand" I love this thing.

Thanks for all the input guys. I really do I now have some knowledge about this stuff now

Pick one of these up if you haven't already. Most of the stuff is of acceptable quality, although I've gotten a few duds. (A lay down threading bit that had the insert cocked 5* from the shank and a live center with .002 runout under load).

Even if you choose not to buy from them, the catalog is a good resource to put pictures and descriptions together.PXL_20221230_234307083.jpg

Positive carbide tool that is sharp to the touch is my first choice. Hands down. I have no use for a negative tool on an engine lathe. Period. I can get part numbers if anyone is interested.

I would love to have some part#'s for the holder and insert bxa size toolpost it what I will have

Get that book I mentioned. It answers every question you've asked with great detail, part numbers, nomenclature, and decoder rings.

Great!!
I KNEW i needed a decoder ring to figure these insert numbers out!

Bad enough all the guys at work talk in G code for their Haas, and i'm the only one running Mazatrol!!

I haven't bought David P. Best book mentioned above but the "Engineers Black Book" also has a considerable section on insert tooling, it doesn't specifically recommend tool holders like David does. One thing David is good at is recommending the Bentley of every tool. There are cheaper options available. The original poster said he had ordered a Precision Matthews PM-1340GT and that's the lathe that David has. When he received it, he completely disassembled it and body worked it, painted it and reassembled, so if your "that" kind of guy, here's his album of projects.

I like the 55* diamond DCMT shaped inserts for working in relief grooves and such. Like others, I switch to a sharp DCGT ground insert designed for aluminum when I need to shave .001 off a shoulder or other light cuts.

I switched to the 35 degree "V" inserts from the "D" years ago- gets into tighter spaces...
Great for plunge/undercuts, profiling, facing; I rarely use any other insert for turning.
