Is a Federal License required to work on guns?

I have had several people tell me that gunsmiths today are required to have a special Firearms Manufacturing license. They indicate to build and sell barrels or to even work on guns, that the license would be required.

Is this true? If so what does it entail?

Its all screwed up right now. But you really need an 07 FFL and are supposed to be paying the ITAR fee every year to be doing almost any type of gunsmithing. Its a screwed up "regulation" that put a lot of guys out of work.

It has been a requirement for a very long time that anyone "engaged in the business" as defined by ATF needs to have an FFL. The exact type needed is also defined by them based on what it is being used for. But, there are hundreds if not thousands of guys doing "Gunsmithing" work that are not licensed, insured, or registered with ITAR, a number of them on this forum. The chances that they will every get a visit are slim to none.

I'd love to see a law passed requiring individuals to have to pay their own taxes. It's a very different feeling writing the irs a check vs having it pulled out before you get your paycheck. They have us so trained we get excited for our tax returns. They steal a little too much and we think it's a bonus when they give it back lol.

Isn't that the truth.

We have rules go a reason.
But only the law only applies to honest people.
Their are honist gun smiths and many that aren’t
My self I would tak the chance of getting caught
The penalty of getting caugh
Is not worth the chance you take
Any one that don’t have the proper
License is stealing from the honest

If as Alex has indicated I would need a 07 FFL and pay the ITAR fees, then I assume this would also allow you to buy and sell guns along with work on them and build barrels for sale to others. Not sure what the costs associated with all but would be worth looking into.

I didn't know the unalienable right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" was licensed.
