Home Defense

You’d be surprised what sorts of defensive weapons are in a home. Bats, dumbbells, knives, wasp and hornet spray, bleach, frying pans and pots, leather belts, sock full of coins, and of course firearms.

One good one is an alarm system sign and decals on windows and doors. That generally deters the would be from even trying.

The best is knowing your home layout and being able to walk around it in pitch dark without hitting something. That, and being able to know where some sort of weapon can be had.

So my bud went to a training/class specifically for this scenario: You and your family are barricaded in your bedroom, you're armed, and a bad guy/gal is outside your door, telling you that they are coming in.

He told me that 50% of the time, you, the family member, would get smoked. 50% of the time, regardless of how it played.
When I was a kid, I read every gun rag printed - there was no internet. At 14, before I could drive I was casting 200gr semi wadcutters for my 45 acp 1911, and 120gr truncated nose bullets for my "Super 38 1911.

I read an article, and I wish I still had it around, but this was around 1970 and there weren't many modern type defense bullets available and automatics were rarely used by the Police Dept. We were in the middle of the great debate about the 9mm and 38spl being reliable fight stoppers when compared to the 45 acp. I read this article that tabulated the known/recorded shootings by police offers using a 45. There were 21 shootings by police using a 45ac in the year of the tabulation - there were 19 instances where one shot ended the fight, and 2 required more than one shot.

The article also noted one incident where police went in a bedroom to arrest a perpetrator - it resulted in 3 officers being shot down before they got him. Everyone who came in scanned at eye level. The perp was lying on the floor shooting up as they came in.

Keep Guineas in the yard. IYKYK
That was much in order on Northern Calif farms when I was traveling through the area....
The Guinea Hens have a screeching noise that cannot be ignored and nothing can sneak up on them without setting them off..!!!
I have friends that have about 30 geese, the same rule applies and even one in your yard will be very defensive to their territory as anyone that has ever encountered a large drake can tell you...!

Anyone ever wonder about the cleanup? What happens after? House repairs? Walls roof..beyond your walls and roof. Perhaps a car....does insurance pay? I doubt it. Carpet, floors? A couple of shots could be quite costly. Of course you may not be 6 feet under. Before you spray a house with your 11-87 or binary triggered AR...you may want to think about it.....

A 145lb Kangal Shepherd is a good deterrent to the home invader. Their bark is as big as their bite.....
Do you have to regularly feed it intruders to avoid paying for it's food?

On farms over here guys use lose gravel all around the house with lots of Guinea fowl as early warning system with big dogs backing them up but when they start making that Guinea fowl noise when the sun comes up and people start moving around id shoot all of them after a week

The landowner pays for clean up.

Best idea is call the sheriff & have them hauled off. No good comes from shooting anyone.

All well and good, except the last time I had to call the sheriff it took them 45 minutes to get here. Thankfully it was only for a carload of drunks that crashed in my front yard, but a couple were quite belligerent about me calling the law and only cooled off a little and backed off when they saw the 1911 stuck in my belt. If that had been persons intent on harm to me or mine, that 45 minutes would certainly be a bit problematic.
Bottom line...reaction and subsequent actions are situational and cannot be planned in detail in advance. "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."

Not really true. If you/ family stays alive I consider that good.
I would never rely on some agency to respond in time when my door is being kicked in. Such as a home invasion by some drugged out idiots.
Consequences far outweigh laying on a coroner’s table.

The other thing is at night when things happen, I have a blinding pulse flashlight which will blind and disorientate an attacker giving you a couple for seconds to take care of business.
My home is just north 0f YNP by 56 miles. With Grizzly Bear mace cannisters in our home always. We leave a bear mace container beside the front and back door. Anyone comes to the door we don't know pick it up before opening the door and hold it behind our back with finger on the trigger I don't want to have to kill someone so it's the safest way to protect our home. If needed there is a hidden handgun very close as well.

Without going back and reading the entire thread but a lot of break-ins and invasions happen during the day. Folks have their guard down, security system may be turned off, doors unlocked, and the crooks feel safer. That and the fact that some of us still work. A lot of neighbors ignore them too. At night the bad guys know that are at more vulnerable if a homeowner wakes up with a gun.

Somebody breaks in at night we have three yappy dogs, and we already have a plan to get in a corner of the bedroom and shoot the first H. sapien that is stupid enough to come through the door. Afterwards, we wait 30 minutes and if we don't see any blue lights arriving then it never happened. ;)

I've thought about this. If I were to defend from my bedroom door, in the direct line of fire squarely at the end of the hall way against the opposite wall is a custom-made hickory hutch.
