Home Defense

I've thought about this. If I were to defend from my bedroom door, in the direct line of fire squarely at the end of the hall way against the opposite wall is a custom-made hickory hutch.
I have thought about this as well. What is the best way to minimize my cost for something or someone that isn't my problem. Pass through home shots will cost you more....damage to neighbors if nearbye. Lots to think about before you shoot....

When I was in high school, a buddy of mine got commode-huggin' drunk one night and his old man had the house locked up. The guy tried to get into his own house by climbing through a window. He made it about half way and then fell the rest of the way making a horrible mess and a lot of breaking-glass noise. If his dad had been waiting with a gun, he might have shot his own son. Not sure what this all means but it's something to think about.

The rule that covers it is always clearly identify your target. It's one of the basics. Anyone who can't obey the basics should not own firearms.

I have a nephew that works at the Prison here. I asked him about this notion of 50%. Maybe, if you are foolish enough to leave the bedroom. Wifey comes behind the bed and dials 911. I grab the 12 gauge.
He says the staff are issued #4 buck in the shotguns and trained to skip shoot. That is firing into the concrete 6-8 feet in front of the perp. Takes them down every time, with few fatalities. That's the load that lives in the 12 gauge next to the bed at our house.
One of the custom features we added when we built the new house is a master switch next to the bed. Flip it, and every light in the house goes flashing. The siren also deploys in the LR.

Richard,

no offense to you, just that low 50% assessment. It's the post, not the poster. They have to come thru your door to really be a threat. Guess how fast I can empty an eight-round extended magazine in an 1100 when I do not care who the perp is? 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, fast as you can count out loud until the perp(s) drop.

I cycle tested a 1911 yesterday after a spring change. Fired six rounds in about 2 seconds. It’ll take a bad guy about that same amount of time to cover about 10 feet. Some food for thought.

I think damage to my furniture would be the furthest thing from my mind. Maybe I’m
misunderstanding you.

One of my old girlfriends had a brother-in-law. When he was living at home, he knew his brother was going to come home liquored up, so he prepared things special for that. He took a roll of kite string and ran it around the room, criss crossing it all over, anchored to bed posts, night stand legs, etc. He then went to bed until he woke up to the sound of things crashing and a bunch of screaming

Absolutely true story.

Shotgun. One and done. Pistol training takes time. Lots of time. Most don't have that kind of time these days. Shooting a shotgun and training with one takes a fraction of that time.
Exactly, however you still need a light source to follow up for the 2nd or 3rd asshole!

My home is just north 0f YNP by 56 miles. With Grizzly Bear mace cannisters in our home always. We leave a bear mace container beside the front and back door. Anyone comes to the door we don't know pick it up before opening the door and hold it behind our back with finger on the trigger I don't want to have to kill someone so it's the safest way to protect our home. If needed there is a hidden handgun very close as well.
I forgot to add just above our front door is a cow bell and as the door opens it rings the bell. Just like the door bell on the general store in the old western movies. Wife and i live alone so at night if that bell rings i grab a gun and see what's going on. No one today ever things about a cow bell inside the door till it rings then it's to late.

Go to a IDPA or USPSA Match at your local club, it's about $20 a match My skills are a thousand times better even after just a few matches Plus I found I like it! it's fun!
Been meaning to do just that for a while now. I bet it *is* fun.

Well, I didn't mean to imply that I would hold my fire in deference to furniture. It's more like I've thought about that and would have to accept it as the cost of doing business.

Hopefully expanding rounds wouldn't exit the target. If they do or if I miss, hopefully the guy who built the hutch is still in business (he does repairs too). Otherwise my kids will inherit a nice piece with an interesting conversation-starting feature!

I wonder how many people would be effective in a home defense situation. Whether it’s a deal where you are awoken in the middle of the night or just the stress of the situation in broad daylight. Buy all the equipment, talk the talk, have the plan, but could they? Buying the equipment is pretty easy.

What’s Mike Tyson say, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face?

I wonder what percentage of people, in a stressful situation, could not manipulate the safety, make a good shot, manage the situation in general.

As a Nam Combat Vet ; who lived with those stresses , and had to live in some less than "savory" neighborhoods after returning to the "World" , I have spent most of the last five decades , either with a handgun under my pillow , or in the nightstand next to my head .
I'm a very light sleeper , but compared to my wife who can hear a bug crawling on the
wall , it only takes her hand on my hip , and I am fully awake and coherent .
If one cares to take on a .40 cal. , 185gr Critical Duty JHP , then come ahead . Please supply your own Body bag , as I don't have any . That IS the way you will leave .
