I have never understood the idea of using a flashlight at night in my house if intruder is here. Seems to me it tells bad guy where you are. in middle of night my night vision is pretty good. Poster above was fortunate not to kill his daughter's BF. I don't know what the solution is. flashlight is probably a good idea, but it sure gives your location away. I guess I could hold it out to the side or something. My GF and I have a plan if intruder is in the house at night, or anytime for that matter, main question is,,,, will she follow the plan?

One of our training sessions we're taught to put into muscle memory negotiating through your house in the dark.
Memorize everything, and keep stuff out of the walkways

I have had to utilize this tactic a few times and has served me well
Even snuck up on a cop once and let the telltale sound of a slide rack as soon as I was in a defensive position outside.
(before I knew it was a cop just answering a noise complaint due to my generator)
he was actually quite impressed because first, he turned my generator off
then after a minute or two when he saw no flashlights or other light sources coming from inside
and when I didnt just come right out..... he thought
"Oh shit, he's loading up" lol I covered him from an elevated position before suddenly yelling out
"WHO DO WE GOT HERE!"
he very softly spoke and said "Ummmm you're not in any trouble, can you please put the gun down and just talk to me"

I thought for a moment and then asked
"You like to show up to peoples houses in the middle of the night just to tell them they're not in any trouble???!!!"
Afterward our convo he said
"You did exactly what I would have done, so I don't blame you"

As I understand it a gun mounted light is only used to acquire your target and take away there night vision not turned on making yourself a point of aim. Others may know better.

If you have tritiums, the light is usually not needed
But, as one guy mentioned here probably a good idea to ID your target first just in case it's some friend
I did have one friend who snuck in on me while I was taking a shower
He thought it would be funny to scare me right?
So I'm in the shower and I see the sliding glass door barely start to move open, little by little
I thought maybe soap got in my eyes and I was seeing things
I'm staring at the door , motionless, waiting to see if it moves again?
the door started moving again, ever so slowly, no noise at all
so of course I thought "WTF, someone is seriously about to ??? who knows what"
but I was not in the mood to wait and find out what
I was in a panic, no weapons
I grabbed the shampoo bottle thinking maybe I'll squirt them in the eyes....nah
then I grabed my razor, and then thought nah, will only safely shave him or superficial cut him
I didnt know what to do?
FUDGE!!!!!
I'm looking around in the shower for anything to use, so finally I grabbed the round hand mirror
and figured I will frisbee the sucker at him and try to break his wrist or some hand bones or hope the glass break and cuts him on impact
So once the shower door slid open enough I saw a hand begin to reach in
I flung that mirror so hard at his wrist....
Then I heard a scream, then I yelled, the he screamed again
and I yelled,it was my last resort, tried to scare whoever it was off by yelling lol
it sounded like 2 chimpanzees yelling at each other going
AAAAH .....AHHH........ AAAAH...... AHHHH
then I opened the door, standing there naked about ready to fight
I was most afraid that if I tried to defend myself in the shower I would slip and fall on my butt and be done for
once I slid the door open and realized who it was
I was like "DUDE what the heck are you doing!"
He said "I thought it would be funny to scare you"
Ummm yeah funny, NOT
it's funny now.... but not at the time, if I did have a gun in the shower he would def have been shot

Long story short, it did taught me a good and valuable lesson
If there is an intruder, a smart one.... what if they wait until you go into the bathroom?
Me and one of my good customers were talking about home defense once and I relayed him this story
and he said "Oh yeah, I always bring a gun into the bathroom with me"
So I now bring a gun into the bathroom since then
as I realized This is when you are MOST vulnerable
I mean, if you think about it, what is there that can be used as a weapon... in the bathroom?
