Do I really need a fancy rimfire rifle?

Charts like that are ok when you're first starting out to get a general idea of what you might see. As long as you understand that what actually happens can vary from day to day and at different ranges
For clarity, I was using that chart for 50 yd rimfire.

Further than 50 yd you can get 3 different winds in three different speeds and directions, switching, rising falling etc.

So in my view, centerfire 400+ yd is more a seat of the pants call... shoot a round and look for impacts, then guestimate wind speed..

I don't know about fancy, but the CZ457/Bartlein combo I have is one of my favorite rifles to shoot by far. It goes with me EVERY range trip and gets shot inbetween letting the centerfires cool. There's a lot of days I'll just take it to the range by itself for trigger/Bench practice and shoot 2-3 boxes of ammo also.

With SK long range, it'll make around 75% hits on a 20"x20" plate at 500 yards. At 50 yards it'll do 10 shots into a ragged hole. At 100 it'll do .75"-1 MOA consistently for 5 rounds. Just a super fun rifle that you don't have to spend time loading, or replacing expensive components for.

I handled this cz457 varmint at Scheels. Tempting.

To answer your original question, no you don't. A quality factory rifle, say a Tika, Begara, or CZ will give you the feedback you seek. However, a highend Anschutz, Walther, or40X will certainly outperform the others day in and day out, and a custom even more so. Should you decide you enjoy Smallbore competition there are different classes in Benchrest. In Smallbore F-Class it's whatever rifle makes weight. Most top shooters are using full custom. I compete in Club Level Rim Fire Benchrest, F-Class, and Benchrest Silhouette oyt ot 200 yards on the rams. My comprtition rifles are a CZ 457 MTR in Factory, a Walther KKM in Match Grade and F-Class, and an Anschutz in Silhouette. Still the single smallest group I ever shot at 100 yards was with a factory CZ 457 Varmint and RWS R-50, which is unobtainable for over a year. Finding and keeping ammunition your rifle shoots well is a constant struggle, at least for me. Finally don't forget a high quality scope is required to do justice to your set up. Nightforce and March are commonly used.

Let me put it this way, my nicest rimfire is my 582. I have 3 rifles that combined cost me less than $100. Hell, I found a Marlin between my safe and wall this year that I don't have a clue where it came from, lol!

As much as the factory repeater actions are capable of, I just dont have a want or need for another mag fed rimfire. I'd really prefer a single shot first, but a mag fed isn't entirely out of the question. Kind of leaning heavily toward a 40x right now. Will make a more deliberate effort on deciding as I roll quarters and charge my kids for laundry and rent, lol!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Feinwerkbau. They produce high end rimfire rifles and regularly feature in Olympic disciplines. When I competed on small bore its what I had and it was excellent. Great stocks, triggers, barrels.

The ranges I shoot at you can get 4 different winds in a 30 second period. the wind rose charts are good for beginning shooters as Pat said, but flags will lie and only sighters will give you the best information on a condition.
you have to have an open mind and not think well the chart said hold here because the wind is coming from this direction. I shot many matches where it was the opposite from what the chart would have indicated.

Sometimes you don't even have to wait 30 seconds.

Opposite directions within 5 yards......with equal enthusiasm......... LOL!!!

They don't make a chart for this!!! :D:D
