Putting 27 Preventable Deaths Into Perspective
Some thoughts I had this afternoon, first posted to another forum:
With the recent grandstanding by Obama, Biden, et al, then giving some thought to other "statistics" with regard to mortality in the United States, it took me all of about 20 minutes just now to collect the following information:
22.5 deaths per year 1931-2005 from football injuries (direct & indirect)
"From 1931 to 2006, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research reported 1,006 direct and 683 indirect fatalities resulting from participation in all organized football (professional, college, high school, and sandlot) in the US.; the yearly number of indirect fatalities has remained near 9.0 per year."

Teenage deaths 1999-2006 = 131,000 or about 16,375 per year.
Of this number, approx. 3/8 (~ 38%, more than 1/3) were from motor vehicle traffic accidents or
6,222 per year, more than 17 each day.

2005-2009 fatal drownings of children 15 years old or younger: 3,107 or 444 per year;
4 years of age or younger - 73 per year.

"Overall, drowning death rates in the United States have declined in the last decade; however, drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children aged 1–4 years."

If the activities whereby the above occur are at minimum covered by "the pursuit of happiness" then certainly there's a double standard when it comes to limiting "the right to keep and bear arms" when one considers the numbers involved.
Does it seem to others (as it does to me) that firearms suddenly are getting more attention than they might otherwise deserve?
