Give KG1 a try. I use it in the shop every day and have great results.

OMC engine cleaner, soak it in the bore an hour or more; follow with JB or Iosso, back and forth on tight patch about 20 times, remove with clean patches.

IOSSO as another choice if preferring to use a paste instead of liquid. I've yet to find a liquid solvent of any brand that will remove carbon, as verified with before and after use of my Hawkeye. Several that make advertising claims for their carbon removal abilities, are just plain outright lies! A few liquids will remove it from the flat surfaces on the lands & grooves, but will not take it out of the corners where the lands meet the grooves. "The Hawkeye knows".

I'd like to give a +1 to the KG-1 carbon remover. It's the best liquid I have used for carbon but I still don't think it will get it all just by itself.

fdshuster, what technique and cleaner do YOU use to get it out of the corners between the lands and grooves, and how many foulers do you find necessary to settle the barrel back to its most accurate state?

I ask this question because I shot four foulers, all of which seemed to hit right where they were aimed, and then my first target was a disaster, 3.7 inches, and the next three were 2.2, 1.6 and 2.4 at 520 yards. I suspect the barrel hadn't settled down, but how do you know for sure?

gmorganal: JB bore paste with a good, snug fitting bronze brush, push strokes only, chamber to muzzle, usually about 10 total will sweep it all out. The bristles do a good job of getting into those 90 degree corners. No foulers required unless I get carried away ( don't do that anymore, always check on the progress) and take every trace of fouling out. I just want to keep it under control. If I could assign a percentage to describe the degree of "clean", it would be about 85%. Just finished two 6ppc's & one 6BR that showed just a trace of copper remaining, but that's the way they were put in the rack. They'll be fired again within 10 to 14 days.

Another KG products user hear. I still bronze brush though so it's not the "Holy Grail". They make barrel break-in much less of a chore.

I use KG-1, bronze brushes, and JB bore paste all. I really like the KG-1 and it will get some copper out as well as the carbon. I soak AR bolt parts in it and it does a good job of loosening the fouling.

The kg-1 works well on ar's and shotgun gas systems as well. I use a lot of that product and also have a borescope. Between kg-1 (carbon) kg-2 (mild abrasive) and kg-12 (copper), I have yet to find a better cleaning system out there.

Kyle & Jason: I have been hearing good things about KG-1 for carbon removal, and have been meaning to give it a try. Unfortunately, about the only place I can find that sells it is Midway & everytime I call Midway ( " Just about everything for shooting, reloading, gunsmithing and hunting") to try to place an order for a few items along with the KG-1, everything I need is always "on backorder", "out of stock", etc. Not going to spend $12 shipping for a $6 item. Cannot find it locally anywhere. Sure wish they would have a better retail sales setup. The JB is messy to use with cleanup time to get it off the face of the barrel and other places, so I can see how a solvent (if it works) would be a better idea. Other solvents have been a disappointment for me.

Just a little JB and Kroil soaked patch. Makes clean up of JB easier. Kroil seems to get under carbon into metal. I mix it with copper solvent too. I shoot RE15 in dasher. This combo works well (bore scoped)

Try some Carbon Remover from Boretech. (They also make a Copper remover,) and confirm with the Hawkeye. I found these to be easy to use and a few passes was all it took.

Is there anything better than JB bore paste

I have tested a lot of stuff in my gun shop but in the end following get`s my favorite:

1) for carbon / fouling removing: JB Bore Paste
2) for fouling removing: KG 12 big bore cleaner (no ammonia so no oil after cleaning is necessary)
3) WD 40 is great to clean carbon from pistols etc but its not a good oil / its good for removeing carbon etc
4) The best oils are Break Free CLP and LPSII. Both are suitable for very low temperatures
5) For some applications grease is usefull. For excample bolts from repeating rifles to protect them from rust and get a better cycling. I use gloves to rub the grease on the wohle bolt.
6) To protect rifles from rust modern coatings like ceracote, Ilaflon, KG coating etc are best. But they should be made from a professional coater to get the right quality.
7) On new rifle / pistol parts nitrading surfaces like Tenifer (Glock slides) are best to prevent rust and are much harder and better than any other coating.

I put a chamber plug in, fill my barrel with Kroil, seal the muzzle with a foam ear plug, and let it sit overnight, the next day I patch my barrel clean, a little Sweets 7.62 and the copper is gone too.
