Case Neck Lube - Bullet Seating

Matt, Can't take the suspense. What liquid, if it ain't top secret ? Seymour

I use spray graphite, it can be purchased at many automotive parts stores. Spray appropriately 1/8” in the bottom of a shot glass and dip your cases in it. Let the cases upside down to dry. Wipe excess off the outside with acetone. Evenly applied and does not come off.

Like Walter said, and I am sure Matt uses something similar, as I and many others use. I use the lid of it to puddle it up, dip the case in without a primer(to be sure there isnt an air pocket), wipe off the outside of the case, and let them sit neck down to dry. I havent experimented with other brands or types, this is just the stuff I use.

Glad I have the chance to help out a fellow shooter. Be careful with the amount you apply, it will drastically reduce the neck tension, or should I say the amount of force needed to seat your Bullets.

I've had good luck this past season with hbn powder suspended in alchohol. Dip the neck in the suspension or apply with a rotating bore mop. Breaks the neck bullet "weld" and brings hbn into play with its added benefits. I've played with using a flex hone inside the necks to produce a cross hatch pattern and give the lubricant a place to reside.

Has anyone used something like case slick spray lube, sprayed on a pad and roll the bullet on it before seating?

I dont like doing anything to my bullets to possibly add an inconsistency to them. I know people do the tub dust and stuff like that and get away with it. I'm just not going there.

I use the Imperial dry lube. Just before adding powder I dip the neck of the case then wipe off the stuff on the exterior to minimize the mess. I tried using a Q tip to paint case lube on the bullet body before seating but it was tedious. Last year I tested lubed vs non lubed and found no difference, or if it did it got lost in the noise for me. I still lube just becasue I like the smoother feel when seating

I agree with Mike. The name of thee game IS CONISTENCY. IMO, putting any lube inside necks defeats that purpose. I simply run a same caliber nylon brush in my necks.

After you roll your case in the dry lub, use a funnel with a long neck to drop your powder. Drops the powder just below the neck. If your powder charge is into the neck, you may have to shake the powder down as you lift the funnel out of the neck. Doesn't affect the graphite in the neck. My wife had the funnel in her kitchen, don't know where she got it, look in kitchen ware at the pots and pans store. It had a small hole in the neck which I had to open up with a drill bit to make it flow. Any thing that would drop the powder below the neck will accomplish the same thing.

Whatever works for you is what i always say. This is what i do.

Well i leave the carbon in the necks and just wipe off the outside of the cases.with ballistol for my bench guns. No need to lube necks with the carbon left intact.

For new brass i dip the base of the bullet in the imperial dry neck lube application media.

For cartridges i use an expander ball sizer i dip the necks in the imperial

I am not a proponent of squeaky clean brass. Ocasionally when many times.fired brass has big flakes coming out i might ultrasonic clean it, for brass that hit the ground i tumble in corn cobb media but most of my brass comes.out of.the box, is fired and goes right back in the box. For that i wipe off the case with ballistol and leave the carbon in the necks

Not too long ago here, someone recommended rubbing the inside of the neck of the case with the lead of a large flat carpenter’s pencil. I had forgotten about that, and meant to try it. Does anyone else do that?

The balls are very light, I believe a polymer. They are also tiny. I would not want to try and dip the case necks or like I do the bullets into bird shot. Check Brownells, I don't remember the cost but it was pretty cheap for the kit. They also have sale this weekend so might be good timing.

Are these the same type of poly pellets used in shooting bags?

I think they may use something similar in some bags designed for hunting so you are not packing a ton of weight. But these are very small polymer spheres, maybe 1/64" in diameter. The graphite coats the balls and allows for even distribution of graphite onto the bullet or case mouth. I have dropped a bullet and it will sink in a fare piece on its own weight.

I believe the literature that comes with the imperial case neck lube kit states the application media is tiny ceramic balls.

For case lube, I use a mixture of lanolin and alcohol - the alcohol I use is from the Red HEET bottles that are 98.5% isopropyl alcohol. I lay the cases in a small aluminum baking tray lined with blue shop towels, spritz them a couple times, then roll around in the tray. Then resize. Works great. For cleanup, I run the cases thru an ultrasonic cleaner. Going to try the dry neck lube to seat bullets to see if that makes any improvement.

I hate handling components individually any more than necessary. The idea of applying neck lube one-at-a-time makes me run to the liquor cabinet.

The simple answer, for me at least, is to Moly coat the bullets using the wet method. They come out looking like they've been dark chrome plated; smooth and shiny.

This provides consistent and easy seating force even with very clean case necks prepared using the wet SS tumbling method.

Could you guys that are using the graphite link to what you are buying please? Or just regular old graphite like this?
