Case Neck Lube - Bullet Seating

I do it so the bullet seats with even pressure between cases
If I dont use it the seating pressure is different between cases , some slide in easy and some are hard to go in as they grip the sides of the case
And yes I have found they affect accuracy as the ones that grip more when seating have more pressure, its only slightly but can cause group be bigger
I used to group them in the way they seated eg a hard group and a soft group of bullets but now lubing base of bullet I dont need to put in 2 separate groups
That is good intel, thanks for sharing.

I've been using the graphite on the case-necks before the powder charge, works well even after the powder has flowed thru.
An added bonus from this, I use large kernel powder (H-100 or N-165) and it flows thru a lot easier into my 6MM case necks, less bridging.

Matt, does the lube inhibit the electrolysis (not sure this is what really happens however it appears that way) or just make separating brass and bullet easier?

I think it acts like a barrier to keep it from happening. I use a liquid and have 100 percent coverage. After dry I can seat a bullet and pound it back out and 99 percent of it stays on the neck. I have ammo 3 plus years old and shot at 1700 yards and MOA needed stayed the same. Also when trying to reseat they don't have that Crack when broke loose. Matt

Matt, Can't take the suspense. What liquid, if it ain't top secret ? Seymour

I have a newbie question. When do you apply the powder graphite to the inside of the necks? If you do it before adding powder, doesn't the powder rub off most of the graphite as the powder drops into the case? Or do you apply the graphite after loading powder (which means you need to find some way to apply the graphite to the inside of the neck w/o disturbing the powder)....

I dip the necks into the graphite just before I begin the powder loading process. The seat the bullets and final stage is to wipe off the finished bullet before I check concentricity and put them in the case.

I use to use the One Shot to lube my bullets prior to seating but I became concerned about the potential moisture that I would be trapping in the case with my powder and have since switched to the graphite dry lube. Besides the dry lube is a lot cheaper over time than the One Shot.

Could you guys that are using the graphite link to what you are buying please? Or just regular old graphite like this?

I'm trying the dry lube & beads , I wet tumble with SS Pins , I use the RCBS lube first to size the case also lube the inside of the necks with a Q Tip . After sizing back in the tumbler to remove the lube . When dry I dip the necks in the dry lube with the beads to trim , after trimming and chamfer I'll bip one more time ,wipe the dry lube from the outside of the necks leaving the lube on the inside . Will see if it makes a difference in seating and group size . Takes alittle more time but I'm only shooting 3 10 shot groups at a range trip .

Old thread but man this is good info.

I've been neck bushing down and then expanding with a .306 mandrel for my 300wm... have been wiping the inside of the necks clean before seating.

Hopefully this explains why I still feel some bullets seating easier than others...and will tighten up my groups a little...or at least help ES.

I have been using that redding dry graphite....but mine did not come with the balls inside just filled with the powder...did they go away from that, or something I add extra? I bought it from midway a few months ago.

I use the same lubes. The starter kit comes with two jars a graphite refill with powder only and the other has the graphite with the balls. They also sell the refill jar separately, maybe that is what you purchased?

I may have just not seen the balls and ordered just the graphite. It does seem to clump a little when sizing necks.

I wonder if some steel bird shot dumped in with the lube would help, or if I need to just find the balls seperatly...bird shot is cheaper and I already have it on hand? See any reason that would be a bad idea?

The balls are very light, I believe a polymer. They are also tiny. I would not want to try and dip the case necks or like I do the bullets into bird shot. Check Brownells, I don't remember the cost but it was pretty cheap for the kit. They also have sale this weekend so might be good timing.

I use spray graphite, it can be purchased at many automotive parts stores. Spray appropriately 1/8” in the bottom of a shot glass and dip your cases in it. Let the cases upside down to dry. Wipe excess off the outside with acetone. Evenly applied and does not come off.

I was going to try graphite seed coat, helps seed move through planter. Farmer friends would give me an oz or two. But I only hunt, so other than load development and calibrating sights, I am not on paper. Not sure if I would ever see a difference inside 500 yards.
