Box Stands for Deer Hunting

I've got full 360° viewing but thru 12" tall windows. They are also tinted with a 2" center strip that's not tinted. Been busted so many times in the past from simply turning or moving in clear windows being caught by deer. The tinted really helps but at the same time tough to see thru in low light. Guess it's called sacrifice. In this case for me, it's worth it. Usually leave one open that faces the most active area.

It’s still hunting, just another way of doing it. Yes the stand can be a impediment by drawing attention and pinning you down. I’ve been blackout interior trying to beat that. I learned from a carbon blind that you can see better outside if your eyes get used to darkness inside the stand.
As you can see that 6 x 8 field stand has no back glass. If I stay back from the windows they can’t see in it well. It’s a killer in the evening with the sun behind it!

I don't have any stands as fancy as you gents. I did build a pretty decent stand for my wife. It's insulated with windows on three sides. I used black fiberglass window screen and camo painted the outer side. I used weather strip adhesive to spot glue it to the outside of all windows. Due to the location of the stand, 200 yards is the maximum shot range. For this situation the camoed window screen works perfectly. She can see out, but the deer can't see in. Primos is selling a ground blind that utilizes this same camoed screen concept.

We helped neighbor friend set a big hexagonal blind up. He overbuilt the heck outta it & used that same one way camo mesh on outside of his windows, was pretty slick! If you guys hunt with windows closed, I'd look into that stuff...it works!

We opted for fully open (flip out) windows, since our huts are only 4x4'. A pair of 20" slide windows would be too limiting, and too much hassle to mess with when a deer pops out. So, we open all the windows up, soon as we climb in! Haven't seen much in the way of getting busted by movement, as we paint top 1/2 of interior a dark color, and wear a dark colored hat to 'blend'. If a shiny face were betraying me in the hut, I wouldn't hesitate to don a camo face mask!

Enjoying this thread, guys! Hoping to see a bunch of happy hunters here, soon! Be sure to snap a pic of the deer y'all whacked from your homemade perches & post em up!!!

I've never hunted from a box blind other than a pop up tent type blind until recently. Sure I've sat in other people's box blinds on there property but never had my own until fairly recently. Decided I'm ready to enjoy warmth in freezing weather and frankly deserve it after decades of sitting in trees freezing from spitting rain, snow and ice while winds strip you of the feeling in your extremities. Decided beginning when I return from my annual deer camp in the Upper Peninsula, I'll be in that tower blind after Thanksgiving week thru december rifle, muzzleloader and archery seasons remaining during those times in warmth and dryness. Wasn't that many years ago I called all my buddy's candy Asses for using them. Well, I guess I'm wearing that hat today and happily so. I'm still sitting in a hang on stand thru mid November. Then another week of gun season thru just before thanksgiving and then headed home to the comfort of a leather chair and heat while waiting to fill a tag or two with fat does. This is just the beginning of my tower blind experience. The input from all of you gents will be used in future structures. Thanks for sharing all your ideas and pics.

If I was to be starting over, I think one built on a trailer with shadow grass camo would be a good choice. That would give you a stand anywhere you want one.

Couple of those blinds on the lease I hunt. The farmer needs them to be mobile so they can be removed from his corn and alfalfa fields in the spring. Decent blinds. I prefer more elevation but that can be done on a trailer blind

I built one about 20 yrs ago with short legs that bolted to a hay wagon. A 6x6 just like what I have now but no glass and all steel frame work. It’s traveled up the highway to Iowa several times. They take it off with forks after season and use the wagon.
Those dummies that got it have crashed into just about everything with it and it’s still holding together.

Using loop side only. Then install 1/2”x3/4” door stop for the tracks and painted before glass goes in. The bottom inside pieces don’t need camouflage and has to go in with the glass. Will use adhesive cell foam to seal the overlapping by attaching a piece 1/2” thick on each piece in bypass zone. Small clear adhesive handles also on one of each panel corner.

I have made a few ground level box blinds and use the flat portion of a bed liner from a pickup for the roof sheeting.
Most people give them away, they are rust proof and way quieter than steel in the rain.

Good thread. Some great work and thought went into this.

I’ve pretty much given up on deer hunting these days even though I used to live for it. No decent place to go anymore. Too much competition on public land with too many rude hunters. I’m too old for that nonsense.

You guys that have places to set up these awesome box stands should consider youreselves fortunate. Power to you.

Well folks just got to the happy hunting grounds. Gonna be here a few days.
1 thing is for sure, something is leaving here dead. Could be a deer, hell it could be me. We're down to 12 hours of light and I'm going to use every minute of it.
20181024_185850.jpg that's the side view mirror of my wife's fully self contained 23' mobile deer stand.

Just started hunting this field and the deer are hitting it hard. The turnips look eaten and not much room for another track in that 1/4 acre patch. Threw a couple bags of fertilizer on the clover and they are glued to it, running a dozen deer off to get out of stand a hour after dark. 10x50 sightrons can see in the moonlight all night but my bow can’t. Had 3 nice bucks center field Tuesday night rattling them horns and chasing the girls around! Hard to go home with that going on...
Many people are hunting by they’re trail cameras now and not killing deer, I have a realistic goal of around 150 and will shoot then immediately. Nocturnal monsters are more camera entertainment but very difficult to kill or ever see in daylight. “The best time to kill a deer is when he’s right in front of you” ... I will hunt until I fill my tags with good bucks. Got 2 to fill
Going into the morning moon phase now, take the time to learn the moon effects. High above and on the opposite side.

16 does today, 8 yesterday. Not 1 darn buck.
Rained good this evening. Clouds got moon blocked out tonite.
Tomorrow is another hunt before heading home.

Hang in there, they should be running early early in the morning. Or limping in from chasing all night! Lol I’m getting out a hour before light maybe more

Been keeping my eyes on the willows, haven't seen the 1st rub yet. Seems like they are late this year. We're trying to fill mamas rifle tag, I go back to bowhunting in a couple weeks.
Unless you draw a doe tag and there aren't many. We get 1 deer per person, and you have to choose rifle or bow.

Pour a bottle of doe in heat on her and cut her loose with running shoes! Good exercise and see the country side!! Lol
